Background Fake news on children’s and adolescent health are spreading. Internet availability and decreasing costs of media devices are contributing to an easy access to technology by families. Public health organizations are working to contrast misinformation and promote scientific communication. In this context, a new form of communication is emerging social media influencers. Aim of this study is to evaluate the role of paediatric influencers (PI) in communicating information about children and adolescents’ health. Materials and methods A group of PI was enrolled from December 2019 to January 2020 by a scientific commission nominated by the Italian Paediatric Society (SIP). PI were asked to share Facebook messages from the official page of the SIP to their own network. Social media tools have been evaluated across 12 months, from July 28, 2019, to July 11, 2020. For the purposes of clarity, we schematically divided the study period as follows: the period of PIs activity (January 6, 2020, to July 11, 2020) and the period when PIs were not yet active (July 28, 2019, to January 4, 2020). Information on Facebook page (lifetime total likes, daily new likes, daily page engaged, daily total reach) and on published post (lifetime post total reach, lifetime post organic reach, lifetime engaged users) were evaluated. Results A significant increase in Facebook daily new likes, page engagement and total reach, as well as in lifetime post total and organic reach was evidenced. As for PI, they reported a positive experience in most cases. Discussion In the digital era, communication strategies are becoming more important, so that the scientific community has to be actively involved in social media communication. Our pilot study demonstrated that the recruitment of paediatric influencers has increased communication and interaction of the SIP Facebook page. Conclusion Our study shows the potential role of influencers: spreading health messages via PI seems to be a successful strategy to promote correct communication about children’s and adolescents’ health

Metavariables resuming host immune features and nodal involvement are associated with oncological outcomes in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma

Oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a common head and neck cancer characterized by a poor prognosis associated with locoregional or distant failure. Among the predictors of prognosis, a dense infiltration of adaptive immune cells is protective and associated with improved clinical outcomes. However, few tools are available to integrate immune contexture variables into clinical settings. By using digital microscopy analysis of a large retrospective OSCC cohort (n = 182), we explored the clinical significance of tumor-infiltrating CD

Prognostic Nomograms in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: The Negative Impact of Low Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio

Objectives: To investigate the prognostic significance of preoperative neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the impact of different clinical-pathologic factors in a series of primary oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC).Materials and Methods: All naive OSCCs treated with upfront surgery between 2000 and 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with distant metastasis, synchronous head and neck cancer, immunological disorders, or who had received previous chemotherapy and/or radiation of the head and neck area were excluded. The main outcomes were overall (OS), disease-specific (DSS), loco-regional free (LRFS), and distant metastasis free (DMFS) survivals. Univariate (Kaplan-Meier) and multivariate (Cox regression model) analysis were performed, and nomograms developed for each outcome. NLR was analyzed as a continuous variable using restricted cubic spline multivariable Cox regression models. Results: One-hundred-eighty-two patients were included. Five-year estimates for LRFS, DMFS, DSS, and OS were 67, 83.7, 69.5, and 61.2%, respectively. NLR had a complex influence on survival and risk of recurrence: negative for very low and high values, while positive in case of intermediate ratios. At univariate analysis, T classification, 7th AJCC stage, nodal metastasis, perineural spread, and lymphovascular invasion were statistically significant. At multivariate analysis, extranodal extension (ENE) and perineural spread were the most powerful independent prognostic factors. NLR was an independent prognosticator for the risk of recurrence. In nomograms, NLR and ENE had the strongest prognostic effect. Conclusions: In OSCC, very low preoperative NLR values have a negative prognostic impact on survival and recurrence, similarly to high ratios. ENE and perineural spread are the most important clinical-pathologic prognosticators

Multicentre Italian study of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children and adolescents, preliminary data as at 10 April 2020

Data on features of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in children and adolescents are scarce. We report preliminary results of an Italian multicentre study comprising 168 laboratory-confirmed paediatric cases (median: 2.3 years, range: 1 day-17.7 years, 55.9% males), of which 67.9% were hospitalised and 19.6% had comorbidities. Fever was the most common symptom, gastrointestinal manifestations were frequent; two children required intensive care, five had seizures, 49 received experimental treatments and all recovered

From climatic to international shocks: Where does the evidence stand on income changes and child labor

    No full text
Children in developing countries are vulnerable to shocks and adversities and child labor is often seen as a direct consequence of poverty and economic downturns. While such univocal causality may appear obvious, its empirical basis has not been systematically evaluated. To understand the linkages between shocks, changes in the economic situation of families and child labor, we therefore conduct a systematic literature review on the impact of income-related shocks on child labor. We evaluate empirical studies of weather events and natural disasters, agricultural shocks such as crop failures, family shocks like parental illness, price shocks and transnational shocks through trade, migration, and remittances. Focusing on the literature that identifies causal effects, we find that the relationship between shocks and child labor is far from univocal. While in most cases adverse shocks increase child labor, we find that favorable shocks that improve earning opportunities may also cause more child labor. Policies to tackle child labor should therefore develop safety nets that minimize the probability of children being used as buffers in adverse economic downturns, but also consider the risk that positive economic shocks may attract children into labor due to changes to the value of children’s time spent working

The role of savings and credit to cope with shocks in Malawi. Considerations for nutrition

    No full text
To investigate the relationship between shocks, coping strategies, and food and nutrition security, this study implements a modified two stages least squared approach using a panel dataset collected in Malawi between 2010-2017. This study contributes to the literature by evaluating the effectiveness of savings and credit-based coping responses on food and nutrition security when shocks occur in a developing country setting. Our measures of food and nutrition security include the food consumption score and estimated calorie and micronutrient consumption per adult male equivalent per day. Results suggest that the use of savings and credit acquisition do not fully protect households from declining food and nutrition security when shocks occur, as households tend to consume fewer food groups when shock strategies are used. Findings may aid policymakers in developing adequate safety nets to allow households to build resiliency to shocks and achieve the sustainable development goal of ‘Zero Hunger’ by 2030
