    Informative sample selection in an active learning (AL) setting helps a machine learning system attain optimum performance with minimum labeled samples, thus reducing annotation costs and boosting performance of computer-aided diagnosis systems in the presence of limited labeled data. Another effective technique to enlarge datasets in a small labeled data regime is data augmentation. An intuitive active learning approach thus consists of combining informative sample selection and data augmentation to leverage their respective advantages and improve the performance of AL systems. In this paper, we propose a novel approach called GANDALF (Graph-based TrANsformer and Data Augmentation Active Learning Framework) to combine sample selection and data augmentation in a multi-label setting. Conventional sample selection approaches in AL have mostly focused on the single-label setting where a sample has only one disease label. These approaches do not perform optimally when a sample can have multiple disease labels (e.g., in chest X-ray images). We improve upon state-of-the-art multi-label active learning techniques by representing disease labels as graph nodes and use graph attention transformers (GAT) to learn more effective inter-label relationships. We identify the most informative samples by aggregating GAT representations. Subsequently, we generate transformations of these informative samples by sampling from a learned latent space. From these generated samples, we identify informative samples via a novel multi-label informativeness score, which beyond the state of the art, ensures that (i) generated samples are not redundant with respect to the training data and (ii) make important contributions to the training stage. We apply our method to two public chest X-ray datasets, as well as breast, dermatology, retina and kidney tissue microscopy MedMNIST datasets, and report improved results over state-of-the-art multi-label AL techniques in terms of model performance, learning rates, and robustness

    Screening Papanicolaou test samples has proven to be highly effective in reducing cervical cancer-related mortality. However, the lack of trained cytopathologists hinders its widespread implementation in low-resource settings. Deep learning-assisted telecytology diagnosis emerges as an appealing alternative, but it requires the collection of large annotated training datasets, which is costly and time-consuming. In this paper, we demonstrate that the abundance of unlabeled images that can be extracted from Pap smear test whole slide images presents a fertile ground for self-supervised learning methods, yielding performance improvements compared to off-the-shelf pre-trained models for various downstream tasks. In particular, we propose Cervical Cell Copy-Pasting (C <sup>3</sup> P) as an effective augmentation method, which enables knowledge transfer from public and labeled single-cell datasets to unlabeled tiles. Not only does C <sup>3</sup> P outperforms naive transfer from single-cell images, but we also demonstrate its advantageous integration into multiple instance learning methods. Importantly, all our experiments are conducted on our introduced in-house dataset comprising liquid-based cytology Pap smear images obtained using low-cost technologies. This aligns with our long-term objective of deep learning-assisted telecytology for diagnosis in low-resource settings

    The Visual Object Tracking VOT2013 challenge results

    Visual tracking has attracted a significant attention in the last few decades. The recent surge in the number of publications on tracking-related problems have made it almost impossible to follow the developments in the field. One of the reasons is that there is a lack of commonly accepted annotated data-sets and standardized evaluation protocols that would allow objective comparison of different tracking methods. To address this issue, the Visual Object Tracking (VOT) workshop was organized in conjunction with ICCV2013. Researchers from academia as well as industry were invited to participate in the first VOT2013 challenge which aimed at single-object visual trackers that do not apply pre-learned models of object appearance (model-free). Presented here is the VOT2013 benchmark dataset for evaluation of single-object visual trackers as well as the results obtained by the trackers competing in the challenge. In contrast to related attempts in tracker benchmarking, the dataset is labeled per-frame by visual attributes that indicate occlusion, illumination change, motion change, size change and camera motion, offering a more systematic comparison of the trackers. Furthermore, we have designed an automated system for performing and evaluating the experiments. We present the evaluation protocol of the VOT2013 challenge and the results of a comparison of 27 trackers on the benchmark dataset.     Insights into the Role of Plasma in Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition of Titanium Dioxide Thin Films

    Abstract In this work, the effect of plasma on the chemistry and morphology of coatings deposited by Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (AP-PECVD) is investigated. To do so, plasma deposited amorphous titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films are compared to thin films deposited using Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition (AP-CVD) not involving the use of plasma. We focus here on the effect and the interest of plasma in the AP-PECVD process over AP-CVD for low substrate temperature deposition. The advantages of AP-PECVD over AP-CVD are often suggested in many articles however no direct evidence of the role of the plasma for TiO2 deposition at atmospheric pressure was reported. Hence, herein, the deposition via both methods is directly compared by depositing coatings with and without plasma using the same CVD reactor. Through the control of the plasma parameters, we are able to form low carbon coatings at low temperature with a deposition rate twice faster than AP-CVD, clearly showing the interest of plasma.
