    P1 receptors and cytokine secretion

    Evidence has accumulated in the last three decades to suggest tissue protection and regeneration by adenosine in multiple different cell types. Adenosine produced in hypoxic or inflamed environments reduces tissue injury and promotes repair by receptor-mediated mechanisms. Among other actions, regulation of cytokine production and secretion by immune cells, astrocytes and microglia (the brain immunocytes) has emerged as a main mechanism at the basis of adenosine effects in diseases characterized by a marked inflammatory component. Many recent studies have highlighted that signalling through A1 and A2A adenosine receptors can powerfully prevent the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, thus inhibiting inflammation and reperfusion injury. However, the activation of adenosine receptors is not invariably protective of tissues, as signalling through the A2B adenosine receptor has been linked to pro-inflammatory actions which are, at least in part, mediated by increased release of pro-inflammatory cytokines from epithelial cells, astrocytes and fibroblasts. Here, we discuss the multiple actions of P1 receptors on cytokine secretion, by analyzing, in particular, the role of the various adenosine receptor subtypes, the complex reciprocal interplay between the adenosine and the cytokine systems, their pathophysiological significance and the potential of adenosine receptor ligands as new anti-inflammatory agents

    Personal hygiene habituation and related factors of high school students in Gaziantep -Turkey

    Hand hygiene practice has become quite an important issue among hygiene practices. Improving personal hygiene practices leads to decrease in the occurrence of many infectious diseases. A total of 1370 students in 36 classes in 9 schools in Gaziantep were included in this study by "size proportional systematic sampling" and "basic randomized sampling" techniques. A data collection form termed as determining personal hygiene habituation was applied to all students. Total hygiene score was calculated according to the results of the "data collection form". Thereafter, Hand flora samples of 350 students among classes who participated in data collection form application were inoculated against blood agar, eosin methylene blue and saboraud dextrose agar by application on all left hand fingers. Identification of microorganism was performed by conventional method. Staphylococcus aureus was mostly isolated from hand culture of male students and Streptococcus sp. and Enterobacter sp. were mostly isolated from female students. Both personal hygiene practice among high school students and also toilet hygiene condition of schools were inappropriate. In this regard, education about hygiene should be given priority and the necessary structural arrangements should be made in schools

    New Geosite Candidates at the Western Termination of the Büyük Menderes Graben and their Importance on Science Education

    The Buyuk Menderes Graben (BMG) is one of the best-known and the largest geological structure of the West Anatolian Extensional Province. It includes two nature conservation parks and twelve cultural heritage sites within and in its vicinity. Four geologically distinct features/locations within and in the vicinity of the BMG have been previously enlisted as geosite candidates in the provisional Geological Heritage Inventory of Turkey compiled in 2002 by the Turkish Association for the Conservation of the Geological Heritage (JEMRKO): (1) the horst-graben structure of the Buyuk Menderes region itself, (2) the tafoni from the augen-gneiss from the east of Bafa Lake, (3) the zultanite crystals from the northeast of lbir Mountain, and (4) the tourmaline (dravite) crystals from the Camzal, Cine. In the current study, we are introducing additional three new geosite candidates at the western termination of the BMG with three different main geological subjects. The first one is the Yavansu Fault. Located 2 km south of the Kuadas village, it has a clearly exposed unique fault surface which is one of the best examples of structural indicators for the WAEP with respect to the normal faulting events. The second one is located in the Hisartepe Volcanics exposed between Kuadas and Soke, and consists of basaltic lava flows with remarkable prismatic cooling joints and a gorgeous feeder dome reaching up to 150 m height. Final suggestion is the Karina marine fan-delta complex located at the south-eastern border of the Dilek Peninsula National Park. This fan-delta complex is the largest one in the Western Anatolian scale and has remarkable paragon outcrops up to 20 m high between Doanbey and Karina Lagoon
