Can Biomimetic Zinc Compounds Assist a (3 + 2) Cycloaddition Reaction? A Theoretical Perspective

    Get PDF
Compounds bearing tetrazole rings are valuable facets in numerous branches of chemistry including metabolic imaging and the production of drugs and high-energy materials. Synthesis of tetrazoles with the help of organocatalysts has intensively been explored, while enzyme-directed click chemistry has attracted less attention and was only used in inhibitor design so far. Herein, we have investigated the possibility of a biomimetic catalyst based on a Lewis acid approach by exploring the anionic cycloaddition of azide and acetonitrile catalyzed by ZnBr2 in comparison with different biomimetic Zn(II) models. Density functional based calculations in the gas phase and with implicit solvation indicate that a variety of bioinspired zinc complexes should be able to catalyze tetrazole formation with catalytic enhancements comparable to zinc bromide salts. Such bioinspired routes could provide new possibilities for the stereo- and regioselectively controlled synthesis of tetrazoles

This study was designed as a case study. Participants were 12 senior pre-service science teachers (PSTs), who took theoretical and practical courses about STEM education and socio-scientific issues (SSIs) during their education at a state university. For the study, in the first 4 weeks, theoretical courses on SSIs and STEM education were carried out. Afterwards, PSTs were asked to choose a SSI and configure this issue as a problem statement to perform a STEM activity. Participants were given a total of 3 weeks to determine the issue and prepare the STEM activity, and the researchers of the study gave systematic feedback during this period. Then, starting from the fifth week of the study, groups started to implement their STEM activities in the class, where their peers were assigned as their students. The activity plans they prepare, the field notes taken by the researchers during the implementation of the activities and the semi-structured interviews about the opinions of the PSTs on the use of SSI in STEM education were the data sources of the study. Findings revealed that PSTs found establishing STEM problem situations over SSIs suitable since they provide features such as conformity to real life, having multiple criteria and providing compatibility with other disciplines. Moreover, after their practices, they pointed out that the activities enabled both the teaching of the SSI and the integrated teaching to be carried out. As a conclusion, it is recommended to use socio-scientific problem situations to perform STEM education

    Get PDF
Objective:To assess the relationship between routine blood values recorded before fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and final diagnosis in patients whose diagnoses could not be confirmed with FNAB, necessitating surgical excisional biopsy (SEB) as a second invasive procedure.Method:The data of patients who could not be diagnosed via FNAB and who underwent SEB of the cervical lymph node between March 2014 and March 2019 in the otolaryngology department of a research hospital were evaluated retrospectively. According to the definitive diagnosis determined by SEB, the cases were divided into 3 groups as follows: 1) benign, 2) other malignancies, 3) lymphoma. Results:The frequency of males in the other malignancies group was significantly higher compared to the other two groups (p=0.007). Compared to the other two groups, C-reactive protein levels were statistically significantly lower in the benign group (p=0.001). Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in the lymphoma group was significantly higher than in the other groups (p35.5 mm/hr (area under the curve= 0.784, 95% confidence interval: 0.708-0.861, p<0.001).Conclusion:Although ESR is non-specific for the diagnosis of lymphoma in asymptomatic patients, it may be a supportive marker to reduce repetitive invasive procedures in symptomatic patients who may require cervical lymph node biopsy for diagnosis

    Get PDF
Background: Earmuffs can be worn to reduce the noise exposure of premature infants. The results regarding the use of earmuffs to provide physiological stability and reduce the stress level in preterm infants are not precise. The present study aims to examine the effect of providing noise control using ear muffs on premature infants’ physiological parameters and stress levels in the neonatal intensive care unit. Methods: A prospective randomised trial was conducted including 100 premature infants for a one-year-period. After randomisation, the infants included in the study were evaluated for two consecutive days and checked twice a day for a total of four times. The infants in the study group wore earmuffs twice a day, in the supine and prone positions. The infants in the control group were followed up without earmuffs. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the post-procedural stress scores of the study and control groups (p<0.05). The stress scores of the infants in the study group were significantly lower than those in the control group. Two hours after wearing earmuffs on the first and second days, a statistically significant difference was found between the respiratory rates of the two groups, being significantly lower in the study group (p=0,030).Conclusion: According to the results of our study, using earmuffs in premature infants decreased the stress score and respiratory rate; however, this intervention did not affect other physiological parameters
