Isovector Collective Response Function of Nuclear Matter at Finite Temperature
We study isovector collective excitations in nuclear matter by employing the
linearized Landau-Vlasov equation with and without a non-Markovian binary
collision term at finite temperature. We calculate the giant dipole resonance
(GDR) strength function for finite nuclei using Steinwedel-Jensen model and
also by Thomas-Fermi approximation, and we compare them for 120Sn and 208Pb
with experimental results.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
AlphaFold2-multimer guided high-accuracy prediction of typical and atypical ATG8-binding motifs
Macroautophagy/autophagy is an intracellular degradation process central to cellular homeostasis and defense against pathogens in eukaryotic cells. Regulation of autophagy relies on hierarchical binding of autophagy cargo receptors and adaptors to ATG8/LC3 protein family members. Interactions with ATG8/LC3 are typically facilitated by a conserved, short linear sequence, referred to as the ATG8/LC3 interacting motif/region (AIM/LIR), present in autophagy adaptors and receptors as well as pathogen virulence factors targeting host autophagy machinery. Since the canonical AIM/LIR sequence can be found in many proteins, identifying functional AIM/LIR motifs has proven challenging. Here, we show that protein modelling using Alphafold-Multimer (AF2-multimer) identifies both canonical and atypical AIM/LIR motifs with a high level of accuracy. AF2-multimer can be modified to detect additional functional AIM/LIR motifs by using protein sequences with mutations in primary AIM/LIR residues. By combining protein modelling data from AF2-multimer with phylogenetic analysis of protein sequences and protein-protein interaction assays, we demonstrate that AF2-multimer predicts the physiologically relevant AIM motif in the ATG8-interacting protein 2 (ATI-2) as well as the previously uncharacterized noncanonical AIM motif in ATG3 from potato (Solanum tuberosum). AF2-multimer also identified the AIM/LIR motifs in pathogen-encoded virulence factors that target ATG8 members in their plant and human hosts, revealing that cross-kingdom ATG8-LIR/AIM associations can also be predicted by AF2-multimer. We conclude that the AF2-guided discovery of autophagy adaptors/receptors will substantially accelerate our understanding of the molecular basis of autophagy in all biological kingdoms
Photonuclear reactions with Zinc: A case for clinical linacs
The use of bremsstrahlung photons produced by a linac to induce photonuclear
reactions is wide spread. However, using a clinical linac to produce the
photons is a new concept. We aimed to induce photonuclear reactions on zinc
isotopes and measure the subsequent transition energies and half-lives. For
this purpose, a bremsstrahlung photon beam of 18 MeV endpoint energy produced
by the Philips SLI-25 linac has been used. The subsequent decay has been
measured with a well-shielded single HPGe detector. The results obtained for
transition energies are in good agreement with the literature data and in many
cases surpass these in accuracy. For the half-lives, we are in agreement with
the literature data, but do not achieve their precision. The obtained accuracy
for the transition energies show what is achievable in an experiment such as
ours. We demonstrate the usefulness and benefits of employing clinical linacs
for nuclear physics experiments

Synthesis and Evaluation of a Conjugate Vaccine Composed of Staphylococcus aureus Poly-N-Acetyl-Glucosamine and Clumping Factor A
The increasing frequency, severity and antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus aureus infections has made the development of immunotherapies against this pathogen more urgent than ever. Previous immunization attempts using monovalent antigens resulted in at best partial levels of protection against S. aureus infection. We therefore reasoned that synthesizing a bivalent conjugate vaccine composed of two widely expressed antigens of S. aureus would result in additive/synergetic activities by antibodies to each vaccine component and/or in increased strain coverage. For this we used reductive amination, to covalently link the S. aureus antigens clumping factor A (ClfA) and deacetylated poly-N-β-(1–6)-acetyl-glucosamine (dPNAG). Mice immunized with 1, 5 or 10 µg of the dPNAG-ClfA conjugate responded in a dose-dependent manner with IgG to dPNAG and ClfA, whereas mice immunized with a mixture of ClfA and dPNAG developed significantly lower antibody titers to ClfA and no antibodies to PNAG. The dPNAG-ClfA vaccine was also highly immunogenic in rabbits, rhesus monkeys and a goat. Moreover, affinity-purified, antibodies to ClfA from dPNAG-ClfA immune serum blocked the binding of three S. aureus strains to immobilized fibrinogen. In an opsonophagocytic assay (OPKA) goat antibodies to dPNAG-ClfA vaccine, in the presence of complement and polymorphonuclear cells, killed S. aureus Newman and, to a lower extent, S. aureus Newman ΔclfA. A PNAG-negative isogenic mutant was not killed. Moreover, PNAG antigen fully inhibited the killing of S. aureus Newman by antisera to dPNAG-ClfA vaccine. Finally, mice passively vaccinated with goat antisera to dPNAG-ClfA or dPNAG-diphtheria toxoid conjugate had comparable levels of reductions of bacteria in the blood 2 h after infection with three different S. aureus strains as compared to mice given normal goat serum. In conclusion, ClfA is an immunogenic carrier protein that elicited anti-adhesive antibodies that fail to augment the OPK and protective activities of antibodies to the PNAG cell surface polysaccharide
Ventral and lateral spot patterns differentiation between three smooth newt species (Amphibia: Salamandridae: Lissotriton)
The location, shape and area of dark spots on the belly, throat and sides of the body of three closely related species of smooth newts (Lissotriton kosswigi, L. schmidtleri and L. vulgaris) were analysed. Differences were found between species and sexes in the location and shape of dark spots on the belly, throat and lateral surfaces of the body. Discriminant analysis of these spot characteristics allows to identificate of males of all three species with a high degree of confidence (85–91%). In females, only L. vulgaris was correctly distinguished from the other two species (accuracy 81–94%). Anatolian and Thracian populations of L. schmidtleri have very similar patterns of dark spots, which confirm their conspecificity. The differences in the location and size of dark spots make possible successful identification of the species during field research and study of museum specimens. The developed method could be useful for comparative studies of other animal species which have spotted camouflage or aposematic colouration
A short review of constructing noise map using crowdsensing technology
The advent of crowdsensing technology has provided a promising possibility for monitoring noise pollution in large-scale areas. Constructing noise map by using mobile smart phones in a cost-effective manner is being widely used in the city and industrial plants. In this short paper, the state-of-the-art crowdsensing-based noise map applications are first summarized. Furthermore, open research challenges associated with building up noise map are highlighted
Observation of Lambda H-4 hyperhydrogen by decay-pion spectroscopy in electron scattering
At the Mainz Microtron MAMI, the first high-resolution pion spectroscopy from
decays of strange systems was performed by electron scattering off a Be-9
target in order to study the ground-state masses of Lambda-hypernuclei.
Positively charged kaons were detected by a short-orbit spectrometer with a
broad momentum acceptance at zero degree forward angles with respect to the
beam, efficiently tagging the production of strangeness in the target nucleus.
In coincidence, negatively charged decay-pions were detected by two independent
high-resolution spectrometers. About 10^3 pionic weak decays of hyperfragments
and hyperons were observed. The pion momentum distribution shows a
monochromatic peak at p_pi ~ 133 MeV/c, corresponding to the unique signature
for the two-body decay of hyperhydrogen Lambda H-4 -> He-4 + pi-, stopped
inside the target. Its binding energy was determined to be B_Lambda = 2.12 +-
0.01 (stat.) +- 0.09 (syst.) MeV with respect to the H-3 + Lambda mass
