Can Information Availability Increase Patient Compliance? Mitigating Uncertainty Perceptions in the Provider-Patient Relationship

    Get PDF
Patient compliance with provider directions is central to patients’ well being, and non-compliance has been identified as a leading cause of increasing healthcare costs. While numerous factors may affect patient compliance, we investigate the mediating effect of patient health information availability on the relationship between perceived uncertainty and patients’ motivation to comply with providers’ orders. To understand how to mitigate perceived uncertainty, we extend the underlying principles of principal-agent theory—hidden information and hidden action—and propose three uncertainty-mitigating factors: perceived information asymmetry, fear of opportunism, and physician quality. The proposed structural model is empirically tested using data from 184 patients. Our model is supported, and the results provide an understanding of the process by which patients engage in their care through the support of information technology. We discuss the implications for understanding and facilitating the provider-patient relationship and its effect on patients' motivation to comply through the principal-agent perspective

The Perceived Level of Collaborative Work Environment’s Effect on Creative Group Problem Solving in a Virtual and Distributed Team Environment

    Get PDF
Continuous product development and market introduction of new products are central to sustaining company performance, and information systems (IS) development project managers face increasing pressure for quicker product delivery, despite cost constraints. To respond to these challenges, virtual and distributed (V&D) teams are formed, which present a unique environment to foster collaboration among the project team members. We investigated the sources and effects of team members’ perceived level of collaboration on creative group problem solving in V&D IS project settings. Based on relational coordination theory, we performed semi-structured interviews and used a Q-methodology to confirm certain communication and relationship dimensions as precursors to collaborative environments. Using empirical tests, we found that relationships have a direct effect on creative group problem solving and that communication is mediated by perceived collaboration. We present practical implications and recommendations for V&D IS project managers for enhancing creative problem solving for V&D IS projects

The Effect of Unmet Expectations of Information Quality on Post-Acceptance Workarounds among Healthcare Providers

Electronic health record (EHR) systems have the capacity to aid clinical decision making by providing timely and relevant information about patients. However, providers’ lack of access to complete and up-to-date information in the required format hinders their ability to make timely decisions and often leads to misdiagnosis or redundant, duplicate tests. This research evaluates the extent to which pre-adoption information quality expectations are met and their effect on post-adoption satisfaction with an EHR system in terms of information quality and the workarounds that they may generate. The hypotheses were empirically tested through analysis of the responses of 64 healthcare stakeholders. The results indicate that lower information quality was perceived post-adoption than was expected at pre-adoption of the EHR system. Ultimately, workarounds were found largely to be a direct result of dissatisfaction with the EHR system. The results have implications for remedies to workarounds in terms of policy, training, and EHR system features modifications

Teaching Literacy in First-Grade of Primary School During COVID-19 Pandemic

Along with the COVID-19 pandemic, a new era had to be passed in education. The education process in Turkey has been maintained entirely or partially in the form of remote or distance education, or partly face-to-face since the outbreak in the process of being face-to-face education opportunities. This research seeks to examine in-depth how literacy teaching in the first grade, one of the essential processes of primary school education, took place during the pandemic. The research applied a case study, one of the qualitative research methods. In addition, the participants in this research were determined based on criterion sampling. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews with teachers and parents of students and the observations made by one of the researchers in online lessons. The data obtained were analyzed through content analysis. The findings are presented under the themes of "the teaching process, the stakeholders, and the factors that make the teaching process difficult". The conclusion reveals that the pandemic negatively affected the literacy teaching process, as well as every field. In other words, teachers could not get enough support from parents and MoNE so that teachers and parents were anxious

Revisiting the Technology Challenges and Proposing Enhancements in Ambient Assisted Living for the Elderly

Several social and technical trends support the elderly’s desire to live independently in their preferred environment, despite their increasing medical needs, and enhance their quality of life at home. Ambient-assisted living (AAL) has the capabilities to support the elderly and to decrease their dependency on formal or informal caregivers. We provide a review of the technological challenges that were identified as inhibiting factors in the past decade and then present recent technological advances, e.g., cloud computing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things. We also fill the gap in the current literature in regard to specific AAL solutions and propose fourth-generation AAL technology design. We find that most informal caregivers are family members who are medically untrained and that the use of advanced analytical processes on AAL-generated data could significantly increase symptom identification. We also present the implications and remaining challenges along with recommendations for future research

This research examines teachers' perceptions of gossip in schools. The research employed an explanatory approach of the mixed methods. Quantitative data were obtained through the "Organizational Gossip Scale," and qualitative data were obtained through the semi-structured interview form. Quantitative data were collected from 302 teachers selected by simple random sampling method in secondary schools in Mardin, Turkey. Qualitative data were collected from ten teachers chosen by the maximum variation sampling method. The results showed that gossip could be seen as an opportunity to have information in schools and develop relationships. Still, it can also be a threat in terms of organizational harm. As a conclusion, the significance of gossip in informal processes in schools was emphasized. Implications were made to practitioners and researchers that the threat aspect could be turned into an opportunity.
