Bird Community Responses to Rest-Rotation Grazing in Western Canada\u27s Grasslands
Western Canada’s native grasslands support high levels of avian diversity including both resident and migrant species. Many grassland specialist bird populations, however, are in serious decline due to widespread habitat loss resulting from agricultural conversion and adverse land management. As the primary use on remaining grasslands, cattle grazing largely determines the availability and quality of bird species’ habitat, depending on the timing, intensity, and frequency of livestock use. While adaptive multi-paddock grazing (AMP, a short duration, high-intensity grazing system that prioritises plant recovery between grazing events) is growing in popularity, comprehensive assessments of bird diversity in relation to AMP grazing practices are largely lacking. As part of a larger grazing management study, we examined how AMP grazing practices influence the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of bird species, compared to neighbouring (n-AMP) properties managed with more conventional grazing practices. In addition to the AMP/n-AMP contrast, we used rancher survey information to test for the influence of specific grazing practices over and above biophysical effects. Bird communities were surveyed at 309 point count locations across 38 ranches (set up as matched pairs) using visual and acoustic detection. Overall, we identified 96 bird species, of which 81 species were recorded on AMP-grazed ranches compared to 84 species on grasslands under n-AMP grazing, ranging from 10-32 species per ranch. We observed a considerable grazing management signal on species abundance and diversity including significant associations between some threatened species and n-AMP grazing. Moreover, AMP grazing, and specifically the use of higher rest-to-grazing ratios early in the growing season (prior to August 1), was associated with phylogenetically more clustered bird communities. Overall, this study highlights the potential of specialized rotational grazing systems to alter the composition and phylogenetic diversity of grassland bird communities. In conclusion, we stress the importance for prioritisation of strategic management plans to safeguard and restore North America’s grassland bird communities
Adolescent chronic illness : a qualitative study of psychosocial adjustment
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychosocial issues facing young people living with a chronic medical condition. Materials and Methods: Subjects were young people with a range of medical conditions who were on a waiting list to participate in the Chronic Illness Peer Support programme at the Centre for Adolescent Health, Royal Children\u27s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. Young people agreed to in-depth interviews which were taped and transcribed. Thematic analysis was undertaken by two researchers working independently. Results: Thirty-five young people were interviewed. Thematic analysis revealed five broad themes: control (in control, under control, out of control); emotional reactions (happiness, frustration, anger, sadness, anxiety); acceptance (of illness, of others, of self); coping strategies, and; a search for meaning. The importance of social connections was emphasised. While illustrating the difficulties of managing a chronic medical condition during adolescence, a generally positive message emerges about these young people. Conclusions: Many young people with chronic illness appear relatively resilient in the face of the adjustment challenges presented by their illness. Interventions that allow a young person to explore meaning, build self-esteem, and acceptance through positive social connections are likely to improve adjustment outcomes in this group.<br /
Bilateral symmetry breaking in a nonlinear Fabry-Perot cavity exhibiting optical tristability
We show the existence of a region in the parameter space that defines the
field dynamics in a Fabry-Perot cylindrical cavity, where three output stable
stationary states of the light are possible for a given localized incident
field. Two of these states do not preserve the bilateral (i.e. left-right)
symmetry of the entire system. These broken-symmetry states are the
high-transmission nonlinear modes of the system. We also discuss how to excite

Radiographic classification of coronal plane femoral deformities in polyostotic fibrous dysplasia
Fibrous dysplasia of bone is a skeletal dysplasia with a propensity to affect the femur in its polyostotic form, leading to deformity, fracture, and pain. The proximal femur is most commonly involved with a tendency to distal progression, thereby producing the typical shepherd's crook deformity. However, there are few data on the spectrum and progression of femoral deformities in polyostotic fibrous dysplasia
Synchronization in small-world systems
We quantify the dynamical implications of the small-world phenomenon. We
consider the generic synchronization of oscillator networks of arbitrary
topology, and link the linear stability of the synchronous state to an
algebraic condition of the Laplacian of the graph. We show numerically that the
addition of random shortcuts produces improved network synchronizability.
Further, we use a perturbation analysis to place the synchronization threshold
in relation to the boundaries of the small-world region. Our results also show
that small-worlds synchronize as efficiently as random graphs and hypercubes,
and more so than standard constructive graphs

Optical Coherence Tomography May Be Used to Predict Visual Acuity in Patients with Macular Edema
Purpose. To determine whether the volume of retinal tissue passing between the inner and outer retina in macular edema could be used as an indicator of visual acuity.
Methods. Diabetic and uveitic patients with cystoid macular edema (81 subjects, 129 eyes) were recruited. Best corrected logMAR visual acuity and spectral optical coherence tomography (OCT/SLO; OTI, Toronto, ONT, Canada) were performed in all patients. Coronal OCT scans obtained from a cross section of the retina between the plexiform layers were analyzed with a grid of five concentric radii (500, 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500 ÎĽm centered on the fovea). The images were analyzed to determine the amount of retinal tissue present within each ring. A linear regression model was developed to determine the relationship between tissue integrity and logMAR visual acuity.
Results. A linear relationship between tissue integrity and VA was demonstrated. The volume of retinal tissue between the plexiform layers in rings 1 and 2 (up to 1000 ÎĽm from the foveal center) predicted 80% of visual acuity. By contrast, central macular thickness within the central 1000 ÎĽm predicted only 14% of visual acuity.
Conclusions. This study showed that the cross-sectional area of retinal tissue between the plexiform layers in cystoid macular edema, as imaged by OCT, is the best indicator of visual function at baseline. Further prospective treatment trials are needed to investigate this parameter as a predictor of visual outcome after intervention
Public goods and decay in networks
We propose a simple behavioral model to analyze situations where (1) a group of agents repeatedly plays a public goods game within a network structure and (2) each agent only observes the past behavior of her neighbors, but is affected by the decisions of the whole group. The model assumes that agents are imperfect conditional cooperators, that they infer unobserved contributions assuming imperfect conditional cooperation by others, and that they have some degree of bounded rationality.
