Adhesion attenuation and enhancement in aqueous solutions
When two surfaces confine water layers between them at the nanoscale, the behaviour of these confined water molecules can deviate significantly from the behaviour of bulk water, and it could reflect on the adhesion of such surfaces. This study assesses the role of confined water layers on the adhesion of hydrophilic surfaces and how sensitive this adhesion is to the presence of contaminants. Our methodology used atomic force microscopy adhesion measurements, whereby an alumina-sputtered sphere-tipped cantilever was interacted versus a flat alumina single crystal. Testing was performed under immersed conditions using (i) water, (ii) water/dimethylformamide mixtures, (iii) water/ethanol mixtures, and (iv) water/formamide mixtures. These solutions were intended to assess the influence of dielectric constant, molecule size, and the number of hydrogen bonding opportunities available to molecules upon confinement between surfaces. It was found that dilute concentrations of ethanol and formamide decreased the adhesion. In contrast, the adhesion increased in the presence of dilute concentrations of dimethylformamide. The adhesion was attenuated by in excess of two orders of magnitude for high concentrations of the organic solutes
Analyticity of the SRB measure for a class of simple Anosov flows
We consider perturbations of the Hamiltonian flow associated with the
geodesic flow on a surface of constant negative curvature. We prove that, under
a small perturbation, not necessarely of Hamiltonian character, the SRB measure
associated to the flow exists and is analytic in the strength of the
perturbation. An explicit example of "thermostatted" dissipative dynamics is

A head-up display for mid-air drone recovery
During mid-air retrieval of parachute packages, the absence of a natural horizon creates serious difficulties for the pilot of the recovery helicopter. A head-up display (HUD) was tested in an attempt to solve this problem. Both a roll-stabilized HUD and a no-roll (pitch only) HUD were tested. The results show that fewer missed passes occurred with the roll-stabilized HUD when the horizon was obscured. The pilots also reported that the workload was greatly reduced. Roll-stabilization was required to prevent vertigo when flying in the absence of a natural horizon. Any HUD intended for mid-air retrieval should display pitch, roll, sideslip, airspeed, and vertical velocity
Late cretaceous extensional tectonics and associated igneous activity on the northern margin of the Gulf of Mexico Basin
Major, dominantly compressional, orogenic episodes (Taconic, Acadian, Alleghenian) affected eastern North America during the Paleozoic. During the Mesozoic, in contrast, this same region was principally affected by epeirogenic and extensional tectonism; one episode of comparatively more intense tectonic activity involving extensive faulting, uplift, sedimentation, intrusion and effusion produced the Newark Series of eposits and fault block phenomena. This event, termed the Palisades Disturbance, took place during the Late Triassic - Earliest Jurassic. The authors document a comparable extensional tectonic-igneous event occurring during the Late Cretaceous (Early Gulfian; Cenomanian-Santonian) along the southern margin of the cratonic platform from Arkansas to Georgia

Optimal fidelity of teleportation of coherent states and entanglement
We study the Braunstein-Kimble protocol for the continuous variable
teleportation of a coherent state. We determine lower and upper bounds for the
optimal fidelity of teleportation, maximized over all local Gaussian operations
for a given entanglement of the two-mode Gaussian state shared by the sender
(Alice) and the receiver (Bob). We also determine the optimal local
transformations at Alice and Bob sites and the corresponding maximum fidelity
when one restricts to local trace-preserving Gaussian completely positive maps.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Feedback Enhanced Sensitivity in Optomechanics: Surpassing the Parametric Instability Barrier
The intracavity power, and hence sensitivity, of optomechanical sensors is
commonly limited by parametric instability. Here we characterize the parametric
instability induced sensitivity degradation in a micron scale cavity
optomechanical system. Feedback via optomechanical transduction and electrical
gradient force actuation is applied to suppress the parametric instability. As
a result a 5.4 fold increase in mechanical motion transduction sensitivity is
