    Class Standing and Student Perceptions of Safety in Christian Higher Education: A Causal-Comparative Study

    Campus safety has become a significant topic in higher education. A dynamic environment including regulatory changes and notable criminal incidents has resulted in rapid changes in campus policy in the United States. Limited research has been conducted regarding stakeholder perceptions of campus safety, though research is lacking regarding campus safety in Christian higher education. Research is especially lacking among Christian institutions in the southeastern United States and in comparing student perceptions based on class standing. This causal-comparative study examined the results of a survey presented to undergraduate students at a Christian university to answer the question as to whether there are differences in student perceptions of campus safety based on class standing and gender. The adapted Perceptions of College Safety and Security scale was sent to undergraduate students at a suburban Christian university in upstate South Carolina. The survey results were compared via ANOVA based on class standing and again based on gender. The instrument as a whole showed no significant difference between students based on either gender or class standing, leading to a failure to reject the null hypothesis. Individual questions did show significant differences, leading to further discussion and recommendations for future research. Opportunities for future research including comparing student differences in perceptions of campus safety by comparing differences between students attending various Christian institutions in a variety of setting, comparisons of perceptions based on hometown or geographic region, perceptions of students during the college decision-making process, longitudinal studies, and comparisons of perceptions between different types of stakeholders (e.g. parents and students)

    Secondary Engineering Design Graphics Educators: Credentials, Characteristics, and Caseload

    Many secondary courses within Career and Technical Education, including engineering design graphics, have a high enrollment of students with categorical disabilities or limited English proficiency. However, current teacher preparation programs do not lend themselves to address the needs of the growing diverse classroom that exists in most secondary level engineering design graphics courses. This project analyzes the current credentials and characteristics of engineering design graphics teachers along with their caseload for working with students with categorical disabilities or limited English proficiency. The results show that although engineering design graphics teachers have a high case load for working with students with categorical disabilities or limited English proficiency, many of them earned a teaching certificate in a manner that may not adequately prepare them to teach these students. By understanding this information, future recommendations can be made to address the critical need to increase teacher preparedness to work with students with categorical disabilities or limited English proficiency

    Comparing Career Awareness Opportunities Of Academically At-Risk And Non At-Risk Freshman Engineering Students

    This study explored how freshman engineering students utilized career awareness developmental opportunities prior to entry into post-secondary academics. Specifically, the study delved into separations and distinctions among students at-risk of non-continuation due to matriculation concerns and students non at-risk. Founded on the amended arrangement of Nasta’s (2007) Career Exploration Survey-Revised instrument, singular factors were studied through hypotheses targeting career awareness behaviors among at-risk and non at-risk subgroups. The results show there are possible contradictions to commonly accepted beliefs about career awareness between at-risk and non at-risk students. Several deductions, considerations, and implications are highlighted based upon the findings of the study.

    Freshman Engineering Students At-Risk Of Non-Matriculation: Self-Efficacy For Academic Learning

    Students identified as at-risk of non-academic continuation have a propensity toward lower academic self-efficacy than their peers (Lent, 2005). Within engineering, self-efficacy and confidence are major markers of university continuation and success (Lourens, 2014 Raelin, et al., 2014).  This study explored academic learning self-efficacy specific to first-year engineering students with at-risk indicators.  The at-risk determination was made through trajectory to matriculate, classified by cumulative grade point average of academic studies. An adapted version of the Self-efficacy for Learning (SEL) scale, modified by Klobas, Renzi and Nigrelli (2007), was administered to freshman engineering students identified at-risk and not at-risk of matriculation. Internal consistency of the SEL was analyzed and once deemed satisfactory (Cronbach alpha = .94), item-level outcome comparisons between student subgroups were made for each of the 22 instrument items

    The Debris Team developed and implemented measures to control damage from debris in the Shuttle operational environment and to make the control measures a part of routine launch flows. These measures include engineering surveillance during vehicle processing and closeout operations, facility and flight hardware inspections before and after launch, and photographic analysis of mission events. Photographic analyses of mission imagery from launch, on-orbit, and landing provide significant data in verifying proper operation of systems and evaluating anomalies. In addition to the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Photo/Video Analysis, reports from JSC, MSFC, and Rockwell International--Downey are also included in this document to provide an integrated assessment of the mission
