Learning from Learning Groups
Collaborative learning is a key, and complementary, component of student-centred enquiry-based pedagogy. Today, many educators understand that students learn effectively when working together with their peers to construct new knowledge. Many teachers are working to help their students develop such ability. Teachers do this to help students better understand the relevance of new content, connect new ideas into existing frameworks of understanding, and construct new neurological pathways and connect synapses in their brains. In addition, group learning has been shown to increase students’ critical thinking skills, creativity, collaborative behaviours, understanding of ethics, and the like. In the literature, attention has been paid to how groups of students can most effectively work together. Even greater attention has been paid to how teams work in business and industry. On the other hand, relatively little research has been reported about how groups of faculty can enhance their own knowledge and performance by embracing the concept of group learning—by learning in groups themselves. At Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) group learning is becoming the norm among teachers as well as students. As a result, DIT provides an ideal place to study the dynamics of group learning among teachers as well as among students. Moreover, in this particular institution, it is also possible to assess learning that occurs across groups—learning that filters its way up from the classroom into programmes, colleges, and administrative decision-making. This paper summarizes formal research into three aspects of the group-learning movement that has emerged at DIT. The overall project involves data collection and analysis of: (1) a faculty peer-learning group that facilitated (2) student peer-learning groups in classes across the electrical engineering curriculum as part of (3) a broad institutional program designed to support professional development and enhance learning and teaching. The project summarized here uses interpretive, qualitative methods to investigate the dynamics of group learning
When groups help and when groups harm: origins, developments, and future directions of the 'social cure' perspective of group dynamics
A substantial literature supports the important role that social group memberships play in enhancing health. While the processes through which group memberships constitute a ‘Social Cure’ are becoming increasingly well-defined, the mechanisms through which these groups contribute to vulnerability and act as a ‘Social Curse’ are less understood. We present an overview of the Social Cure literature, and then go beyond this to show how the processes underpinning the health benefits of group membership can also negatively affect individuals through their absence. First, we provide an overview of early Social Cure research. We then describe later research concerning the potential health benefits of identifying with multiple groups, before moving on to consider the ‘darker side’ of the Social Cure by exploring how intra-group dynamics can foster Curse processes. Finally, we synthesise evidence from both the Cure and Curse literatures to highlight the complex interplay between these phenomena, and how they are influenced by both intra- and inter-group processes. We conclude by considering areas we deem vital for future investigation within the discipline
Cadmium Impairs p53 Activity in HepG2 Cells
Cadmium and cadmium compounds are contaminants of the environment, food, and drinking water and are important constituents of cigarette smoke. Cd exposure has also been associated with airborne particulate CdO and with Cd-containing quantum dots in medical therapy. Adverse cadmium effects reported in the literature have stimulated during recent years an ongoing discussion to better elucidate cadmium outcomes at cell and molecular level. The present work is designed to gain an insight into the mechanism of p53 impairment at gene and protein level to understand Cd-induced resistance to apoptosis. We used a hepatoma cell line (HepG2) derived from liver, known to be metal responsive. At genotoxic cadmium concentrations no cell cycle arrest was observed. The p53 at gene and protein level was not regulated. Fluorescence images showed that p53 was correctly translocated into the nucleus but that the , a downstream protein of p53 network involved in cell cycle regulation, was not activated at the highest cadmium concentrations used. The miRNAs analysis revealed an upregulation of mir-372, an miRNA able to affect expression and promote cell cycle progression and proliferation. The role of metallothioneins and possible conformational changes of p53 are discussed
Policies that Enhance Learning and Teaching
Educational institutions often implement policies with the intention of influencing how learning and teaching occur. Generally, such policies are not as effective as their makers would like; changing the behavior of third-level teachers proves difficult. Nevertheless, a policy instituted in 2006 at the Dublin Institute of Technology has met with success: each newly hired faculty member must have a post-graduate qualification in “Learning and Teaching” or successfully complete one within the first two years of employment. The intention is to build teachers’ knowledge about student-centered pedagogies and their capacity to implement them. As a result of this policy (and associated programs that support it), positive outcomes are readily apparent. Individual teachers who have completed the programs have implemented significant change at the course and program levels. This paper introduces the policy, identifies outcomes in relation to existing theory, describes research underway, and pinpoints areas where organizational learning has occurred
Public Health England: Social prescribing approaches for migrants: call for evidence
This submission is built on Social Prescribing (SP) and Migration research conducted through a co-production design (two roundtables). The aim of the coproduction roundtables was to identify barriers and facilitators of health service access and satisfaction among migrants, and recommendations for using SP with migrant populations.
The submission focuses on four key topics which are discussed in detail within the main body of this submission below:
-A holistic approach to the health needs of migrant populations
-Barriers to health service access, satisfaction with healthcare and implications for SP
-Unique challenges for SP delivery
-Strategies to improve service access and migrant satisfaction with service
Skin cancer excision is more efficient and cost effective in a specialist secondary care service
Aim: To compare the relative efficiencies of skin excisions in primary and secondary care. Methods: We compared the benign: malignant ratio for specimens referred by General Practice, General Surgery and the Skin Cancer Service to the regional pathology laboratory over one month. We used cost minimization analysis to compare the relative efficiencies of the services. Results: 620 excisions were received: 139 from General Practice, 118 from General Surgery and 363 from the Skin Cancer Service. The number (%) of malignant lesions was 13 (9.4%) from General Practice, 18 (15.2%) from General Surgery and 137 (37.7%) from the Skin Cancer Service. Excision was cheaper in General Practice at €84.58 as compared to €97.49 in the hospital day surgical unit. However, the cost per malignant lesion excised was €1779.80 in general practice versus €381.78 in the Skin Cancer Service. Conclusion: Our results indicate that moving skin cancer treatment to General Practice may result in an excess of benign excisions and therefore be both less efficient and less cost effective
Instability Heating of Sympathetically-Cooled Ions in a Linear Paul Trap
Sympathetic laser cooling of ions stored within a linear-geometry, radio
frequency, electric-quadrupole trap has been investigated using computational
and theoretical techniques. The simulation, which allows 5 sample ions to
interact with 35 laser-cooled atomic ions, revealed an instability heating
mechanism, which can prevent ions below a certain critical mass from being
sympathetically cooled. This critical mass can however be varied by changing
the trapping field parameters thus allowing ions with a very large range of
masses to be sympathetically cooled using a single ion species. A theoretical
explanation of this instability heating mechanism is presented which predicts
that the cooling-heating boundary in trapping parameter space is a line of
constant (ion trap stability coefficient), a result supported by the
computational results. The threshold value of depends on the masses of
the interacting ions. A functional form of this dependence is given
Mediation, translation and local ecologies: understanding the impact of policy levers on FE colleges
This article reports the views of managers and tutors on the role of policy ‘levers’ on teaching, learning, and inclusion in colleges of Further Education (FE) in our research project, ‘The impact of policy on learning and inclusion in the Learning and Skills Sector (LSS)’.i Using data from five research visits conducted over two years in eight FE learning sites, we explore the processes by which colleges ‘mediate’ and ‘translate’ national policy levers and how this affects their ability to respond to local need. The paper tentatively develops three related concepts/metaphors to explain the complexity of the policy/college interface – ‘the process of mediation’, ‘acts of translation’ and ‘local ecologies’. We found that policy levers interacted with a complex set of national, local and institutional factors as colleges responded to pressures from the external environment and turned these into internal plans, systems and practices. We conclude by suggesting that national policy-makers, who design national policy levers, may not be fully aware of these complexities and we make the case for the benefits of greater local control over policy levers, where these interactions are better understood
