Interactive local augmentation of television programming
Thesis (M.S.V.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1985.MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH.Bibliography: leaves 43-45.While a videocassette recorder allows a television viewer to decouple the viewing of a television program from its broadcast, its use would be much more rewarding were it able to "understand" what it had recorded and to utilize this information to vary the presentation of broadcast television programs in a personalized manner. A hardware/software system is developed which uses closed-captioning information as a data input and allows variation in the presentation of television newscasts, with results applicable to the locally-intelligent recording and personalized presentation of other sorts of programming as well. The research described in this thesis has been supported in part by the International Business Machines Corporation.by Victor Michael Bove, Jr.M.S.V.S
Cultural diversity and team performance in the Italian Serie A
Cultural diversity features prominently in management studies. A diverse range of skills and perspectives can produce innovation and a greater variety of solutions to day to day problems. At the same time, however, the same heterogeneous approaches and experiences can result in communication and coordination problems, lack of trust and intra/intergroup conflict. We analyse a newly constructed dataset on team composition and performance for 29 teams, 1,238 players and 1,899 matches in the Italian Serie A with information on the players’ place of origin, talent, position, demographics, manager experience and other factors. We compute indices of fractionalization and polarization and find that both measures of diversity have a strong and persistent negative effect on game scores and player objective performance ratings. This research provides new important insights into the drawbacks of cultural heterogeneity in the workplace and calls for more indepth analyses of the nexus diversity-performances on team performance
Government ideology and international migration
We provide the first empirical evidence that differences in government ideology play an
important role in the choice of cross-border migration destinations. In absence of first-hand
experience, immigrants rely on information about the political landscape of the origin and host
countries to form expectations about the context of reception in the host society. We use
data on bilateral migration and government ideology for 36 OECD countries between 1990 and
2016. Our analysis shows that bilateral migration flows are higher when the government at the
destination is more left-wing than the government at the origin, especially when we consider
proximate countries
A Real-Time PCR Assay for the Quantification of Plasmopara viticola Oospores in Grapevine Leaves
Grapevine downy mildew caused by Plasmopara viticola is one of the most important diseases in vineyards. Oospores that overwinter in the leaf litter above the soil are the sole source of inoculum for primary infections of P. viticola; in addition to triggering the first infections in the season, the oospores in leaf litter also contribute to disease development during the season. In the current study, a quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) method that was previously developed to detect P. viticola DNA in fresh grapevine leaves was assessed for its ability to quantify P. viticola oospores in diseased, senescent grapevine leaves. The qPCR assay was specific to P. viticola and sensitive to decreasing amounts of both genomic DNA and numbers of P. viticola oospores used to generate qPCR standard curves. When the qPCR assay was compared to microscope counts of oospores in leaves with different levels of P. viticola infestation, a strong linear relationship (R2 = 0.70) was obtained between the numbers of P. viticola oospores per gram of leaves as determined by qPCR vs. microscopic observation. Unlike microscopic observation, the qPCR assay was able to detect significant differences between leaf samples with a low level of oospore infestation (25% infested leaves and 75% non-infested leaves) vs. samples without infestation, and this ability was not influenced by the weight of the leaf sample. The results indicate that the qPCR method is sensitive and provides reliable estimates of the number of P. viticola oospores in grapevine leaves. Additional research is needed to determine whether the qPCR method is useful for quantifying P. viticola oospores in grapevine leaf litter

Distance Estimation of an Unknown Person from a Portrait
We propose the first automated method for estimating distance from frontal pictures of unknown faces. Camera calibration is not necessary, nor is the reconstruction of a 3D representation of the shape of the head. Our method is based on estimating automatically the position of face and head landmarks in the image, and then using a regressor to estimate distance from such measurements. We collected and annotated a dataset of frontal portraits of 53 individuals spanning a number of attributes (sex, age, race, hair), each photographed from seven distances. We find that our proposed method outperforms humans performing the same task. We observe that different physiognomies will bias systematically the estimate of distance, i.e. some people look closer than others. We expire which landmarks are more important for this task
Termination Casts: A Flexible Approach to Termination with General Recursion
This paper proposes a type-and-effect system called Teqt, which distinguishes
terminating terms and total functions from possibly diverging terms and partial
functions, for a lambda calculus with general recursion and equality types. The
central idea is to include a primitive type-form "Terminates t", expressing
that term t is terminating; and then allow terms t to be coerced from possibly
diverging to total, using a proof of Terminates t. We call such coercions
termination casts, and show how to implement terminating recursion using them.
For the meta-theory of the system, we describe a translation from Teqt to a
logical theory of termination for general recursive, simply typed functions.
Every typing judgment of Teqt is translated to a theorem expressing the
appropriate termination property of the computational part of the Teqt term.Comment: In Proceedings PAR 2010, arXiv:1012.455
Dialectica Categories for the Lambek Calculus
We revisit the old work of de Paiva on the models of the Lambek Calculus in
dialectica models making sure that the syntactic details that were sketchy on
the first version got completed and verified. We extend the Lambek Calculus
with a \kappa modality, inspired by Yetter's work, which makes the calculus
commutative. Then we add the of-course modality !, as Girard did, to
re-introduce weakening and contraction for all formulas and get back the full
power of intuitionistic and classical logic. We also present the categorical
semantics, proved sound and complete. Finally we show the traditional
properties of type systems, like subject reduction, the Church-Rosser theorem
and normalization for the calculi of extended modalities, which we did not have
before
Causal effects of PetroCaribe on sustainable development: a synthetic control analysis
We examine the causal effects of the energy subsidy programme PetroCaribe in the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental. We use the synthetic control method to construct a counterfactual and compare it to the outcomes of the beneficiary countries and thus estimate the magnitude and direction of the PetroCaribe effect. PetroCaribe had a positive effect on economic growth in most of the beneficiary countries; however, this economic boost was not followed by an improvement in social development. Environmentally, PetroCaribe did not negatively or positively impact the environmental quality of the member countries, in the sense that we do not find a significant effect on the trend of urn:x-wiley:14636786:media:manc12275:manc12275-math-0001 emissions per capita
