Nés sous de bons auspices? : Etude qualitative de facteurs contribuant à l'acquisition du bilinguisme par les enfants d'un couple mixte

Pro gradu- tutkielmassani tarkastelen suomi-ranska kaksikielisyyden kehittymistä perheissä, joissa vanhemmilla on eri äidinkieli. Työni tavoitteena on ollut tutkia kuinka eri ympäristötekijät vaikuttavat kaksikielisyyden omaksumiseen ja miten perheiden erilainen panostus vähemmistökielen, ts. kielen joka ei esiinny ympäristössä, oppimiseen näkyy saavutetuissa tuloksissa. Tutkimukseeni osallistui 13 perhettä, joilla on 10-12 vuotiaita, ranskaa ja suomea päivittäin käyttäviä lapsia. Lapsia oli yhteensä 18. Voidakseni tarkastella myös kieliympäristön vaikutusta oppimiseen valittiin perheistä kuusi Suomesta ja seitsemän Ranskasta sekä Sveitsin ranskankieliseltä alueelta. Tutkimusmenetelmiini kuului vanhempien haastattelu perheen sosiolingvististen tekijöiden selville saamiseksi ja lasten kanssa keskustelu suullisen kielitaidon arvioimiseksi. Pääpaino kielitaidon arvioinnissa oli kuitenkin kirjallisella tekstillä, jonka lapset tuottivat molemmilla kielillä tekstittömän kirjan kuvien perusteella. Teksteistä suoritettiin virheanalyysit, joissa eri virheet jaettiin ortografisiin, semanttisiin ja kieliopillisiin virheisiin. Jokaiselle lapselle lasketiin myös keskiarvo, joka osoitti kuinka monta sanaa tekstissä oli jokaista virhettä kohti. Näiden keskiarvojen pohjalta tutkittiin yhteneväisyyksiä virhemäärien sekä perheiden sosiolingvististen tekijöiden kesken. Yhteenvedossa verrattiin myös tuloksia teoriaosassa esitettyihin kielitieteilijöiden tarjoamiin periaatteisiin. Tutkielman perusteella voidaan todeta, että ympäristön vaikutus näytetään usein aliarvioitaneen kaksikielisyyttä koskevissa teoksissa. Hyvään kielitaitoon vähemmistökielessä tarvitaan enemmän kuin yksi kieli - yksi henkilö menetelmä, jossa vanhemmat puhuvat lapselle omaa äidinkieltään. Hyviksi vahvistuskeinoiksi havaittiin varsinkin kaksikielinen koulu sekä useat vierailut toisen vanhemman kotimaahan. Varsinkin perheen nuorimpien lasten vähemmistökielen oppimiseen tulisi panostaa sillä näillä on syntymästään asti mahdollisuus käyttää enemmistökieltä myös vanhempien sisarusten kanssa. Kieliympäristön vaikutuksesta havaittiin, että Suomessa asuvat lapset hallitsivat yleisesti ottaen paremmin vähemmistökielensä kuin Ranskassa asuvat. Tähän pidettiin syynä ranskalais-suomalaisen koulun positiivista vaikutusta kielen oppimiselle sekä ranskankielen arvostettua asemaa Suomessa

The Croatian Community of Southeastern Louisiana: Immigration, Assimilation and the Retention of Ethnic Identity

This work is a study of a community of Croatian immigrants to Southeast Louisiana in the twentieth century. Drawn from a multidisciplinary approach that included spatial analysis of settlement patterns, quantitative analysis of seafood industry data, the records of voluntary associations, and guided by the oral histories of men and women of Croatia who immigrated to Louisiana, this work reveals a community that has managed to maintain close ties despite its distribution both in urban New Orleans and rural coastal Louisiana through links created by and supportive of the state’s seafood and restaurant industries. The study points out how the custom of returning to Croatia for marriage and the retention of property in Croatia helped the group maintain links with its national and cultural origins in ways not always seen with other ethnic groups in America, pointing out the range of the immigrant experience in the United States

Ce rapport a été commandé par les deux ministres à l’association Open Data France en juillet 2016, notamment en lien avec la loi pour une République numérique qui prévoit, pour les collectivités locales de plus de 3 500 habitants,une obligation d’open data par défaut

Conditional Spatial Quantile: Characterization and Nonparametric Estimation

Conditional quantiles are required in various economic, biomedical or industrial problems. Lack of objective basis for ordering multivariate observations is a major problem in extending the notion of quantiles or conditional quantiles (also called regression quantiles) in a multidimensional setting. We first recall some characterizations of the unconditional spatial quantiles and the corresponding estimators. Then, we consider the conditional case. In this work, we focus our study on the geometric (or spatial) notion of quantiles introduced by Chaudhuri (1992a, 1996). We generalize, in the conditional framework, the Theorem 2.1.2 of Chaudhuri (1996), and we present algorithms allowing the calculation of the unconditional and conditional spatial quantile estimators. Bicarbonate enhances expression of the endocarditis and biofilm associated pilus locus, ebpR-ebpABC, in Enterococcus faecalis

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We previously identified <it>ebpR</it>, encoding a potential member of the AtxA/Mga transcriptional regulator family, and showed that it is important for transcriptional activation of the <it>Enterococcus faecalis </it><b>e</b>ndocarditis and <b>b</b>iofilm associated <b>p</b>ilus operon, <it>ebpABC</it>. Although <it>ebpR </it>is not absolutely essential for <it>ebpABC </it>expression (100-fold reduction), its deletion led to phenotypes similar to those of an <it>ebpABC </it>mutant such as absence of pili at the cell surface and, consequently, reduced biofilm formation. A non-piliated <it>ebpABC </it>mutant has been shown to be attenuated in a rat model of endocarditis and in a murine urinary tract infection model, indicating an important participation of the <it>ebpR-ebpABC </it>locus in virulence. However, there is no report relating to the environmental conditions that affect expression of the <it>ebpR-ebpABC </it>locus.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this study, we examined the effect of CO₂/HCO₃^-, pH, and the Fsr system on the <it>ebpR-ebpABC </it>locus expression. The presence of 5% CO₂/0.1 M HCO₃^-increased <it>ebpR-ebpABC </it>expression, while the Fsr system was confirmed to be a weak repressor of this locus. The mechanism by which the Fsr system repressed the <it>ebpR-ebpABC </it>locus expression appears independent of the effects of CO₂^-bicarbonate. Furthermore, by using an <it>ebpA</it>::<it>lacZ </it>fusion as a reporter, we showed that addition of 0.1 M sodium bicarbonate to TSBG (buffered at pH 7.5), but not the presence of 5% CO₂, induced <it>ebpA </it>expression in TSBG broth. In addition, using microarray analysis, we found 73 genes affected by the presence of sodium bicarbonate (abs(fold) > 2, <it>P </it>< 0.05), the majority of which belong to the PTS system and ABC transporter families. Finally, pilus production correlated with <it>ebpA </it>mRNA levels under the conditions tested.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study reports that the <it>ebp </it>locus expression is enhanced by the presence of bicarbonate with a consequential increase in the number of cells producing pili. Although the molecular basis of the bicarbonate effect remains unclear, the pathway is independent of the Fsr system. In conclusion, <it>E. faecalis </it>joins the growing family of pathogens that regulates virulence gene expression in response to bicarbonate and/or CO₂.</p
