    Dans cet article, les auteurs dĂ©finissent les facteurs politiques, Ă©conomiques et sociaux qui ont influencĂ© le dĂ©veloppement de l'organisation communautaire au cours des annĂ©es 1980. Cependant, alors que ces annĂ©es Ă©taient reconnues comme Ă©tant celles de la dĂ©mobilisation et de l'individualisation, des indices ont pointĂ© dans la direction contraire : la prolifĂ©ration des groupes communautaires, le colloque de Victoriaville et la mise sur pied du Regroupement des intervenantes et intervenants en action communautaire. Les nouvelles circonstances appellent nĂ©anmoins un changement de pratique qui se traduit par l'utilisation accrue du groupe en organisation communautaire, de mĂȘme que la repolitisation par le courant d'empowerment. Les auteurs proposent les cuisines collectives comme exemple d'une nouvelle pratique de l'organisation communautaire.In this article, the authors explore the political, economic and social factors which have influenced the evolution of community organization in the '80s. However, while these years have been synonymous with individualism and conservatism, some indications seem to point to another direction. In this social landscape, the conference of Victoriaville and the following foundation of the Regroupement des intervenantes et intervenants en action communautaire appear as milesto-nes. Moreover, the proliferation of community groups goes in the same direction. However, new circumstances set the tone for the increased use of groups and group work in community organization. The popularity of the concept of empowerment indicates a new approach to politization. At least, the authors propose that the community kitchens are a good example of this new way to practice community organization

    Psychopathology and Suicide among Quebec Physicians: A Nested Case Control Study

    Objective. To describe a psychiatric profile and characteristics of physicians who killed themselves in Quebec between 1992 and 2009. Method. The cases of 36 physicians (7 females and 29 males) and 36 nonphysicians who committed suicide were matched for age and gender and examined in a nested case control design. All subjects were judged as definite suicide by the Quebec Coroner Head Office. Consensus regarding DSM-IV diagnoses was established by two forensic psychiatrists. Results. Rates of all Axis I diagnoses were 83% for physicians and 91% for nonphysicians at the time of suicide. Major depressive disorders were the most frequently observed pathology in both groups (61% and 56%, resp.). Conclusions. Physicians and nonphysicians who committed suicide in Quebec suffered from the same type of psychiatric disorder at the time of killing themselves. The findings advocate strongly for more efficient suicide prevention measures including early detection and treatment of mood disorders for the physicians

    Conceptual study for a sub-pupil instrument having 4 high order adaptive optics paths for parallel multi-wavelength high contrast imaging, and medium resolution spectrometry

    We present the concept of an instrument that will create 4 circular sub-pupils of 3 m in diameter. Each sub-pupil path will be corrected by a high order adaptive optics system (SR~80% in H) without spider and M2 obstruction. These four independent channels, obviously all pointed towards the same field, allows the possibility of covering totally different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum simultaneously without compromising Signal to Noise Ratio. Each channel can be dedicated to very specialized but complementary purposes: high contrast imaging, pseudo-wide field imaging, high precision multi-color photometry, medium-resolution spectroscopy, polarimetry and sparse-aperture masking

    On the energy growth of some periodically driven quantum systems with shrinking gaps in the spectrum

    We consider quantum Hamiltonians of the form H(t)=H+V(t) where the spectrum of H is semibounded and discrete, and the eigenvalues behave as E_n~n^\alpha, with 0<\alpha<1. In particular, the gaps between successive eigenvalues decay as n^{\alpha-1}. V(t) is supposed to be periodic, bounded, continuously differentiable in the strong sense and such that the matrix entries with respect to the spectral decomposition of H obey the estimate |V(t)_{m,n}|0, p>=1 and \gamma=(1-\alpha)/2. We show that the energy diffusion exponent can be arbitrarily small provided p is sufficiently large and \epsilon is small enough. More precisely, for any initial condition \Psi\in Dom(H^{1/2}), the diffusion of energy is bounded from above as _\Psi(t)=O(t^\sigma) where \sigma=\alpha/(2\ceil{p-1}\gamma-1/2). As an application we consider the Hamiltonian H(t)=|p|^\alpha+\epsilon*v(\theta,t) on L^2(S^1,d\theta) which was discussed earlier in the literature by Howland

    Cystamine/cysteamine rescues the dopaminergic system and shows neurorestorative properties in an animal model of Parkinson's disease.

    The neuroprotective properties of cystamine identified in pre-clinical studies have fast-tracked this compound to clinical trials in Huntington's disease, showing tolerability and benefits on motor symptoms. We tested whether cystamine could have such properties in a Parkinson's disease murine model and now provide evidence that it can not only prevent the neurodegenerative process but also can reverse motor impairments created by a 6-hydroxydopamine lesion 3weeks post-surgery. Importantly, we report that cystamine has neurorestorative properties 5weeks post-lesion as seen on the number of nigral dopaminergic neurons which is comparable with treatments of cysteamine, the reduced form of cystamine used in the clinic, as well as rasagiline, increasingly prescribed in early parkinsonism. All three compounds induced neurite arborization of the remaining dopaminergic cells which was further confirmed in ex vivo dopaminergic explants derived from Pitx3-GFP mice. The disease-modifying effects displayed by cystamine/cysteamine would encourage clinical testing

    VLTI status update: a decade of operations and beyond

    We present the latest update of the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope interferometer (VLTI). The operations of VLTI have greatly improved in the past years: reduction of the execution time; better offering of telescopes configurations; improvements on AMBER limiting magnitudes; study of polarization effects and control for single mode fibres; fringe tracking real time data, etc. We present some of these improvements and also quantify the operational improvements using a performance metric. We take the opportunity of the first decade of operations to reflect on the VLTI community which is analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively.     Interleukin-10 controls the protective effects of circulating microparticles from patients with septic shock on tissue-engineered vascular media

    During sepsis, inflammation can be orchestrated by the interaction between circulating and vascular cells that, under activation, release MPs (microparticles). Previously, we reported that increased circulating MPs in patients with sepsis play a pivotal role in ex vivo vascular function suggesting that they are protective against vascular hyporeactivity. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of MPs from patients with sepsis on the contractile response of TEVM (tissue-engineered vascular media). TEVM that were composed only of a media layer were produced by tissue engineering from human arterial SMCs (smooth muscle cells) isolated from umbilical cords. TEVM was incubated with MPs isolated from whole blood of 16 patients with sepsis. TEVM were incubated for 24 h with MPs and used for the study of vascular contraction, direct measurements of NO and O2- (superoxide anion) production by EPR and quantification of mRNA cytokine expression. MPs from patients with sepsis increased contraction induced by histamine in TEVM. This effect was not associated with inflammation, neither linked to the activation of NF-kappaB (nuclear factor kappaB) pathway nor to the increase in iNOS (inducible NO synthase) and COX (cyclo-oxygenase)-2 expression. In contrast, mRNA expression of IL (interleukin)-10 was enhanced. Then, we investigated the effect of IL-10 on vascular hyporeactivity induced by LPS (lipopolysaccharide). Although IL-10 treatment did not modify the contractile response in TEVM by itself, this interleukin restored contraction in LPS-treated TEVM. In addition, IL-10 treatment both prevented vascular hyporeactivity induced by LPS injection in mice and improved survival of LPS-injected mice. These findings show an association between the capacity of MPs from patients with sepsis to restore vascular hyporeactivity induced by LPS and their ability to increase IL-10 in the tissue-engineered blood vessel model

    Secular trends of cardiorespiratory fitness in children and adolescents over a 35-year period: Chronicle of a predicted foretold

    BackgroundIn the context of concerns regarding the cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) of youth populations, the aims of this study were: (1) to update reference values for the VO2max for school-aged Canadians and (2) to document secular trends in CRF after a 35-year interval.MethodsBetween September 2014 and April 2017, the CRF of 3725 students (53.2% boys; 6.0 to 17.9 yrs) was determined using the 20-m shuttle run test. The sample was collected in 36 different schools from six cities of QuĂ©bec (Canada).ResultsMedian values of VO2max decreased with age in both sexes (p ≀ 0.05). By the age of 10, more than 20% of boys showed VO2max values below the recommended value (42 ml·kg−1·min−1). At the age of 17, that proportion reached 56.8%. A similar proportion of 12 yrs girls (20%) were under the recommended minimal value (37 ml·kg−1·min−1) and that value reached 69.9% at the age of 17. Compared to 1982, the VO2max at age 17 has declined by 18% for boys and 12% for girls. The situation is worse in terms of functional capacity (number of stages completed) with an overall decrease of more than 30%.ConclusionThis study demonstrates that, compared to data obtained using the same methodology 35 years ago, the CRF and functional capacity of children and adolescents has declined to levels that should raise concerns from a public health perspective. Thus, the development of strategies to promote a physically active lifestyle in youth is more relevant than ever

    The GRAVITY+ Project: Towards All-sky, Faint-Science, High-Contrast Near-Infrared Interferometry at the VLTI

    The GRAVITY instrument has been revolutionary for near-infrared interferometry by pushing sensitivity and precision to previously unknown limits. With the upgrade of GRAVITY and the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) in GRAVITY+, these limits will be pushed even further, with vastly improved sky coverage, as well as faint-science and high-contrast capabilities. This upgrade includes the implementation of wide-field off-axis fringe-tracking, new adaptive optics systems on all Unit Telescopes, and laser guide stars in an upgraded facility. GRAVITY+ will open up the sky to the measurement of black hole masses across cosmic time in hundreds of active galactic nuclei, use the faint stars in the Galactic centre to probe General Relativity, and enable the characterisation of dozens of young exoplanets to study their formation, bearing the promise of another scientific revolution to come at the VLTI.Comment: Published in the ESO Messenge

    The VIMOS upgrade programme

    ABSTRACT The high multiplex advantage of VIMOS, the VLT visible imager and multi-object/integral-field spectrometer, makes it a powerful instrument for large-scale spectroscopic surveys of faint sources. Following community input and recommendations by ESO&apos;s Science and Technology Committee, in 2009 it was decided to upgrade the instrument. This included installing an active flexure compensation system and replacing the detectors with CCDs that have a far better red sensitivity and less fringing. Significant changes have also been made to the hardware, maintenance and operational procedures of the instrument with the aim of improving availability and productivity. Improvements have also been made to the data reduction pipeline. The upgrade will end in 2012 and the results of the program will be presented here
