Di-n-butyltin, tri-n-butyltin and triphenyltin terebates were screened against several human tumour cell lines and found comparably or more active than carboplatin, cis-platin, 5-fluorouracil, methotrexate and doxorubicin, some reference compounds used clinically

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the antifungal activity of a microbial strain isolated from a non-exploited habitat (southeast region ofMorocco) against Candida albicans. Methods: The antifungal producing strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of Calotropis procera Ait. The isolate (Cp-LMA-9) was selected basedon the primary antimicrobial screening. The optimization of the culture media for an antifungal production, and the extraction of bioactive metaboliteswere performed. The bioautography and a partial characterization of these metabolites were also done. Results: Based on the molecular identification, it was identified as Bacillus spp. with a similarity percentage of 98% with Bacillus tequilensis andBacillus subtilis. The maximum antifungal production against C. albicans was observed with malt extract-yeast extract-agar by solid-state fermentationand malt extract-yeast extract-broth under stationary conditions. Antifungal fraction was extracted successfully from the solid-state fermentation byacetone and methanol. It maintained the anti-Candida activity after heat treatment (autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes and boiling for 30 minutes),within a pH range of 2-10, and after treatment with proteolytic enzymes. Conclusion: The bacterium isolated and selected exhibit a remarkable antifungal effect against C. albicans. The resistance of the antifungal metabolitesextracted to heat, alkaline, and acidic conditions and to proteolitic enzymes making theme a promising antifungal compounds for the control ofCandida infections. Keywords: Antifungal activity, Bacillus spp, C. albicans, Rhizosphere, Molecular identification

Antibacterial and antioxidant activities of Origanum compactum essential oil

    Get PDF
In the present study, essential oil of Origanum compactum was analysed and its chemical composition was identified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Among thirty two assayed constituents, carvacrol (30.53%), thymol (27.50%) and its precursor g-terpinene (18.20%) were found to be the major components. The oil was investigated for its in vitro antibacterial activity against a panel of standard reference strains using well diffusion and broth dilution methods. In solid medium, the oil was found to be remarkably active against all tested strains except Pseudomonas which showed resistance. In liquid medium the Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBCs) ranged from 0.0078 to 0.25% (v/v). The antioxidant activity was investigated by three different methods; 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrasyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, -carotenebleaching test and reducing power. The results of this study revealed evidence that the essential oil of O. compactum possesses a good antioxidant effect with all assays; the antioxidant activity isdependent on the oil concentration and can be attributed to the phenolic compounds present in the oil

Synthesis, Characterization and High In Vitro Antitumour Activity of Novel Triphenyltin Carboxylates

The synthesis and spectral characterization of six novel triphenyltin compounds are described. The in vitro antitumour activity of three of these compounds against two human tumour cell lines, MCF-7, a mammary tumour, and WiDr, a colon carcinoma, was determined. All three compounds are more active than cis-platin, etoposide and doxorubicin against both tumour cell lines. They are as active as mitomycin C against WiDr, but less active against MCF-7

X-Ray Structure and In Vitro Anti-Tumoural Activity of the Dimeric Bis[(2-Phenyl-1,2-Dicarba-Closo-Dodecaborane-1-Carboxylato)-Di-n-Butyltin] Oxide

X-ray diffraction studies reveal the structure of {[(2-C6H5-1,2-C2B10H10-1-COO)Bu2Sn]2O}2, 1, to conform to the common motif found for {[(R′COO)R2Sn]2O}2 compounds. The dimer features a central Bu2Sn2O2 unit (two-fold symmetry) with the two Bu2Sn groups being linked via bridging oxygen atoms, each of which also carries an exocyclic Bu2Sn moiety. The two pairs of exo- and endo-cyclic tin atoms are each linked via an almost symmetrically bridging carboxylate ligand and the two remaining ligands coordinate an exocyclic tin atom only, in the monodentate mode. The in vitro anti-tumour activity of 1, determined against a variety of cell lines, is compared with those of the corresponding 2-methylcarboranylacetate, derivative 2, and with clinically used compounds

Essential oils as antibacterial agents against food-borne pathogens: are they really as useful as they are claimed to be ?

Original articleMost studies evaluating the use of essential oils (EO) as antibacterial agents focus mainly on minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) rather than minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBC). In this work, we compared MICs and MBCs of EO from condiment plants commonly used in Mediterranean Europe, namely Origanum vulgare, Salvia lavandulaefolia, Salvia officinalis, Salvia sclarea and Rosmarinus officinalis, aiming to evaluate their application as disinfecting agents in minimally processed produce. Outbreaks-related pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Yarrowia lipolytica were used. Results showed that all EO were able to reduce bacterial growth in all bacterial strains tested, particularly O. vulgare. However, fewer EO exhibited bactericidal activities, and were only effective against one or two bacterial strains, hence eliminating the possibility to use them as broad range disinfectants. Furthermore, the necessary concentrations were too high for food application. Hence, our work suggests the need to evaluate MBC rather than MIC and questions EO usefulness in controlling undesired microorganisms. Overall, and despite the large volume of data published on EO, results obtained were not very encouraging for a realistic application on produce and question the viability of EOs as disinfecting agents in foodinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Bouhdid, M. (2009).
