    Lepton-Flavour Violation in Ordinary and Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories

    By an explicit calculation we show that in ordinary SU(5) logarithmic divergence in the amplitude of μ→eγ\mu \to e\gamma cancels among diagrams and remaining finite part is suppressed by at least 1/MGUT21/M_{GUT}^2. In SUSY SU(5), when the effect of flavour changing wave function renormalization is taken into account such logarithmic correction disappears, provided a condition is met among SUSY breaking masses. In SUGRA-inspired SUSY GUT the remaining logarithmic effect is argued not to be taken as a prediction of the theory.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX209 file, using axodraw.st

    Penyagolosa trails: From ancestral roads to sustainable ultra-trail race, between spirituality, nature, and sports. A case of study

    The organization of an open-air sporting event involves a series of challenges. People are drawn by the desire to do sport, preferably in close contact with nature, so as to complement healthy lifestyles, and in search of air purity. Sporting organizations are increasingly searching for new locations that do not only attract athletes, but spectators and companions too. Races in natural parks provide the additional benefit of doing sport in a unique space, usually a transmitter of simplicity, pure air, and tranquillity. Organizing a mountain race in a natural park implies some issues. These are areas of great environmental richness that must be protected. Natural parks are places of individual recreational activity. Within the running phenomenon, a new type of mountain race has appeared: the hiking-oriented pilgrimage, in which athletes travel ancestral paths, pilgrimage routes thus combining sport practice with spirituality. This paper aims to analyse all the actions and policies that were carried out for the peaceful integration and coexistence of two totally different events that coincide physically and temporally: the Penyagolosa Trails race, and the Peregrins de les Useres, an ancestral pilgrimage that is carried out by each and every one of the towns belonging to the Penyagolosa Natural Park. The objective is to demonstrate the sustainability of the project thanks to the collective effort and the goodwill of the interested parties, in a way that produces a mutual benefit

    Effects of 4-Week training intervention with unknown loads on power output performance and throwing velocity in junior team handball players

    PURPOSE:To compare the effect of 4-week unknown vs known loads strength training intervention on power output performance and throwing velocity in junior team handball players. METHODS:Twenty-eight junior team-handball players (17.2 ± 0.6 years, 1.79 ± 0.07 m, 75.6 ± 9.4 kg)were divided into two groups (unknown loads: UL; known loads: KL). Both groups performed two sessions weekly consisting of four sets of six repetitions of the bench press throw exercise, using the 30%, 50% and 70% of subjects' individual 1 repetition maximum (1RM). In each set, two repetitions with each load were performed, but the order of the loads was randomised. In the KL group, researchers told the subjects the load to mobilise prior each repetition, while in the UL group, researchers did not provide any information. Maximal dynamic strength (1RM bench press), power output (with 30, 50 and 70% of 1RM) and throwing velocity (7 m standing throw and 9 m jumping throw) were assessed pre- and post-training intervention. RESULTS:Both UL and KL group improved similarly their 1RM bench press as well as mean and peak power with all loads. There were significant improvements in power developed in all the early time intervals measured (150 ms) with the three loads (30, 50, 70% 1RM) in the UL group, while KL only improved with 30% 1RM (all the time intervals) and with 70% 1RM (at certain time intervals). Only the UL group improved throwing velocity in both standing (4.7%) and jumping (5.3%) throw (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS:The use of unknown loads has led to greater gains in power output in the early time intervals as well as to increases in throwing velocity compared with known loads. Therefore unknown loads are of significant practical use to increase both strength and in-field performance in a short period of training

    Supernova Neutrino Oscillations

    Observing a high-statistics neutrino signal from a galactic supernova (SN) would allow one to test the standard delayed explosion scenario and may allow one to distinguish between the normal and inverted neutrino mass ordering due to the effects of flavor oscillations in the SN envelope. One may even observe a signature of SN shock-wave propagation in the detailed time-evolution of the neutrino spectra.     Generating Posit-Based Accelerators With High-Level Synthesis

    Recently, the posit number system has demonstrated a higher accuracy over standard floating-point arithmetic for many scientific applications. However, when it comes to implementing accelerators for these applications, the tool support for this arithmetic format is still missing, especially during the step. In this paper, we incorporate the posit data type into the high-level synthesis (HLS) design process, so that we can generate the implementation directly from a given behavioral specification, but using posit numbers instead of the classical floating-point notations. Our evaluations show that, even if posit-based circuits require more area than their floating-point counterparts, they offer higher accuracy when using the same bitwidth. For example, using posit arithmetic can reduce computation errors by about two orders of magnitude when compared to using standard floating-point numbers. Our approach also includes an alternative to mitigate the high overheads of the posits and broadening the potential use of this format. We also propose a hybrid scheme that uses posit numbers only in the private local memory, while the accelerator operates in the classic floating-point notation. This solution is useful when the designers want to optimize local memories and data transfers, but still use legacy high-level synthesis (HLS) tools that only support traditional floating-point notations

    Theoretical adequacy, methodological quality and efficacy of online interventions targeting resilience: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: There is a growing interest in the promotion of mental health, and concepts as resilience are re-emerging and taking relevance. In addition, Information and Communication Technologies can provide potential benefits in the field of mental health, and the treatment of mental disorders in particular. This study aims to synthesize the evidence of internet-based resilience interventions, analyzing the theoretical adequacy, methodological quality and efficacy. METHODS: A systematic search was performed. The eligibility criteria stated for this article were: randomized controlled trials targeted at adults or adolescents and including any psychological intervention focussing on resilience in its rationale or design. Studies with direct (e.g. resilience scales) and proximal resilience measures (e.g. scales on well-being) were included. Risk of bias was assessed for each trial using Cochrane''s Collaboration Tool. Two reviewers worked independently in order to identify potential articles. A total of 11 articles were selected. A random-effects pooling model using the Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman method based on direct and proximal resilience measures at post-test was used. RESULTS: The overall effects of online resilience training compared to control groups at post-test were not significant; the effect size concerning the improvement of resilience was g=0.12 (95% CI: -0.14 to 0.38). In addition, a potential association between the type of outcome and the effect size could be revealed. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present meta-analysis showed that the overall effect of online resilience trainings was not significant. Nonetheless, a tendency for a higher benefit for resilience was found in the studies with a clear assessment theory, indicating some promising effects.     Synchronisation and MSW sharpening of neutrinos propagating in a flavour blind medium

    We consider neutrino oscillations in a medium in which scattering processes are blind to the neutrino flavour. We present an analytical derivation of the synchronised behaviour obtained in the limit where the average scattering rate is much larger than the oscillation frequency.
