Eighty terracotta figurines from the 2013 discovery at Vendeuil-Caply are exhibited for the first time in the Musée archéologique de l’Oise, located near the archaeological site of Vendeuil-Caply. This exhibition Figures de la terre (fig. 1), which runs until November 2015, is the result of a collaboration with 11 French museums and presents in total more than 100 objects that explore the typological variety and the aesthetic character of the Gallo-Roman figurines of northern Gaul. Included in the exhibition is Marchande de statuettes à Pompéi, a 19th-century painting by the neo-classical painter Henry-Pierre Picou that effectively illustrates a commercial context for Roman figurines

Controlling Microgrids Without External Data: A Benchmark of Stochastic Programming Methods

Microgrids are local energy systems that integrate energy production, demand, and storage units. They are generally connected to the regional grid to import electricity when local production and storage do not meet the demand. In this context, Energy Management Systems (EMS) are used to ensure the balance between supply and demand, while minimizing the electricity bill, or an environmental criterion. The main implementation challenges for an EMS come from the uncertainties in the consumption, the local renewable energy production, and in the price and the carbon intensity of electricity. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is widely used to implement EMS but is particularly sensitive to the forecast quality, and often requires a subscription to expensive third-party forecast services. We introduce four Multistage Stochastic Control Algorithms relying only on historical data obtained from on-site measurements. We formulate them under the shared framework of Multistage Stochastic Programming and benchmark them against two baselines in 61 different microgrid setups using the EMSx dataset. Our most effective algorithm produces notable cost reductions compared to an MPC that utilizes the same uncertainty model to generate predictions, and it demonstrates similar performance levels to an ideal MPC that relies on perfect forecasts

Effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker initiation on organ support-free days in patients hospitalized with COVID-19

IMPORTANCE Overactivation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may contribute to poor clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19. Objective To determine whether angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) initiation improves outcomes in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In an ongoing, adaptive platform randomized clinical trial, 721 critically ill and 58 non–critically ill hospitalized adults were randomized to receive an RAS inhibitor or control between March 16, 2021, and February 25, 2022, at 69 sites in 7 countries (final follow-up on June 1, 2022). INTERVENTIONS Patients were randomized to receive open-label initiation of an ACE inhibitor (n = 257), ARB (n = 248), ARB in combination with DMX-200 (a chemokine receptor-2 inhibitor; n = 10), or no RAS inhibitor (control; n = 264) for up to 10 days. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome was organ support–free days, a composite of hospital survival and days alive without cardiovascular or respiratory organ support through 21 days. The primary analysis was a bayesian cumulative logistic model. Odds ratios (ORs) greater than 1 represent improved outcomes. RESULTS On February 25, 2022, enrollment was discontinued due to safety concerns. Among 679 critically ill patients with available primary outcome data, the median age was 56 years and 239 participants (35.2%) were women. Median (IQR) organ support–free days among critically ill patients was 10 (–1 to 16) in the ACE inhibitor group (n = 231), 8 (–1 to 17) in the ARB group (n = 217), and 12 (0 to 17) in the control group (n = 231) (median adjusted odds ratios of 0.77 [95% bayesian credible interval, 0.58-1.06] for improvement for ACE inhibitor and 0.76 [95% credible interval, 0.56-1.05] for ARB compared with control). The posterior probabilities that ACE inhibitors and ARBs worsened organ support–free days compared with control were 94.9% and 95.4%, respectively. Hospital survival occurred in 166 of 231 critically ill participants (71.9%) in the ACE inhibitor group, 152 of 217 (70.0%) in the ARB group, and 182 of 231 (78.8%) in the control group (posterior probabilities that ACE inhibitor and ARB worsened hospital survival compared with control were 95.3% and 98.1%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this trial, among critically ill adults with COVID-19, initiation of an ACE inhibitor or ARB did not improve, and likely worsened, clinical outcomes. Painted Gallo-Roman Figurines in Vendeuil-Caply

In 2013, an archaelogical team exploring the site of Vendeuil-Caply in northern France brought to light a new corpus of Gallo-Roman terracotta figurines. The particular importance of this corpus lies in the preservation of pigments that decorated the surface of these figurines. From the 19th century onwards, the generic term that has been used to refer to this kind of Gallo-Roman production has been “white-clay,” most often associated with the Allier region of central France. This term arose from the stark, white color of the fabric. Consequently, archaeologists were quite surprised to find not only color on the figurines, but also repetitive patterns, such as feathers, or details of clothing

Saturating unitarity bounds at U-duality symmetric points

International audienceIt has recently been shown that the leading Wilson coefficient in type II string theory can take (almost) all values allowed by unitarity, crossing symmetry and maximal supersymmetry in D=10 and D=9 dimensions. This suggests that string theory might define the unique consistent quantum theory of gravity with maximal supersymmetry. We study the minima of the leading Wilson coefficient in D=6, 7 and 8 dimensions and find the global minimum at the point in moduli space with maximal symmetry. The minimum value turns out to always be negative for D<8

Un sanctuaire du nord-ouest de la Gaule : Juvigné (Mayenne)

National audienceThe Gallic and Gallo-roman sanctuary of Juvigné, established on the territory of the Diablintes, has been explored since the 1980s and was the subject of a recent excavation in 2016. These investigations allowed to document the oldest states of the cult site, dated to the late Iron Age, but also to identify two successive temples from the Roman period. The artefacts collected on the site since the 1970s refers to various ritual practices, notably the deposit of metal or glass objects (weapons, ornaments) and the preparation - and consumption ? - of meals during the Gallic period, or the offering of coins and figurines during the Early Roman Empire. The particular evolution of the sanctuary leads to the conclusion that it was probably a public sanctuary, occupied for about 500 years.
