    On-site visible-near IR prediction of iodine number and fatty acid composition of subcutaneous fat of raw hams as phenotypes for a heavy pig breeding program.

    Abstract The quality of subcutaneous fat of raw hams is a trait of interest in selective breeding programs for pig lines used in dry-cured ham production, and rapid, non-invasive methods for its assessment are available. However, the efficacy of such methods to provide indicator traits for breeding programs needs to be proven. The study investigated the accuracy of on-site visible–near IR spectroscopy predictions of iodine number and fatty acid (FA) composition of raw ham subcutaneous fat, and it evaluated their effectiveness as indicator traits of ham fat quality in a pig breeding program. Prediction equations were developed using visible–near IR spectra acquired at the slaughterhouse from five sites in subcutaneous fat of raw hams of 1025 crossbred pigs. Pigs were raised, under standardized rearing and feeding conditions, in the sib-testing program of the Goland C21 boar line and slaughtered at nine months of age and average body weight of 166 ± 15 kg. Accuracy was generally relatively poor, but R2 in external validation was > 0.7 for iodine number and concentration of C18:2n-6, polyunsaturated FAs and omega-6 FAs. To assess the effectiveness of the on-site predictions as indicator traits in a breeding program, (co)variance components of the measured traits (OBS) and of their predictions using in-lab (in-lab-PR) or on-site (on-site-PR) spectrometers were estimated. Available records for OBS were 6814 and 2048, for iodine number and FA composition, respectively. Predictions using in-lab were available for pigs slaughtered between 2006 and 2014, for a total of 10 153 records. Predictions using on-site were obtained from spectra collected since 2011, for a total of 10 296 records. The estimated heritabilities for the investigated traits ranged from 0.34 to 0.50 and were greater for on-site-PR than for OBS. Genetic correlations between OBS and in-lab-PR were very close to 1.00 for all the investigated traits, whereas those between OBS and on-site-PRED ranged from 0.86 to 0.94. On-site visible-IR predictions are accurate enough to support the use of this technique for large-scale phenotyping of raw ham fat quality, even when dealing with animals of a single genetic line raised in standardized conditions, and may be implemented as indicator traits in breeding programs

    Enhancing Biomedical Scientific Reviews Summarization with Graph-based Factual Evidence Extracted from Papers

    Combining structured knowledge and neural language models to tackle natural language processing tasks is a recent research trend that catalyzes community attention. This integration holds a lot of potential in document summarization, especially in the biomedical domain, where the jargon and the complex facts make the overarching information truly hard to interpret. In this context, graph construction via semantic parsing plays a crucial role in unambiguously capturing the most relevant parts of a document. However, current works are limited to extracting open-domain triples, failing to model real-world n-ary and nested biomedical interactions accurately. To alleviate this issue, we present EASumm, the first framework for biomedical abstractive summarization enhanced by event graph extraction (i.e., graphical representations of medical evidence learned from scientific text), relying on dual text-graph encoders. Extensive evaluations on the CDSR dataset corroborate the importance of explicit event structures, with better or comparable performance than previous state-of-the-art systems. Finally, we offer some hints to guide future research in the field

    Treatment of Y-T Humeral Fractures with Polyaxial Locking Plate System (PAX) in 14 Dogs

    The aim of this study is to report the results and to review the outcome of 14 cases of Y-T humeral fractures repair using paired polyaxial locking system (PAX) plates through a combined medial and lateral approach. Fourteen consecutive dogs, with traumatic humeral Y-T fractures, met the inclusion criteria. This study includes signalment, preoperative radiographs, type of implants, radiographic bone healing assessment, complications, range of motion (ROM) of the elbow and limb function evaluated at 120 days after surgery. Postoperative radiographs revealed adequate anatomic reconstruction, and in all cases, bone healing has been achieved. No implant failure was observed. Functional outcome was excellent in 7 dogs (no lameness and preserved ROM), good in 4 (slight lameness and moderate ROM reduction) and discrete in 2 (mild lameness and severe ROM reduction). Complications were encountered in 2/14 patients with implant-associated infection resolved after long-term antibiotic treatment and implant removal. The PAX system is shown to be a valid alternative for the treatment of Y-T humeral fractures, offering the benefit of polyaxial insertion of locking screws. The possibility of angle locking screws is helpful in the distal humeral bicondylar fractures, providing additional options for screw placement in juxtarticular fractures, avoiding fracture lines or other implants

    A Correlative Imaging Study of in vivo and ex vivo Biodistribution of Solid Lipid Nanoparticles

    Purpose: Solid lipid nanoparticles are largely used in biomedical research and are characterized by high stability and biocompatibility and are also able to improve the stability of various loaded molecules. In vitro studies demonstrated that these nanoparticles are low cytotoxic, while in vivo studies proved their efficiency as nanocarriers for molecules characterized by a low bioavailability. However, to our knowledge, no data on the systemic biodistribution and organ accumulation of solid lipid nanoparticles in itself are presently available. Methods: In this view, we investigated the solid lipid nanoparticles biodistribution by a multimodal imaging approach correlating in vivo and ex vivo analyses. We loaded solid lipid nanoparticles with two different fluorophores (cardiogreen and rhodamine) to observe them with an optical imager in the whole organism and in the excised organs, and with fluorescence microscopy in tissue sections. Light and transmission electron microscopy analyses were also performed to evaluate possible structural modification or damage due to nanoparticle administration. Results: Solid lipid nanoparticles loaded with the two fluorochromes showed good optic characteristics and stable polydispersity. After in vivo administration, they were clearly detectable in the organism. Four hours after the injection, the fluorescent signal occurred in anatomical districts corresponding to the liver and this was confirmed by the ex vivo acquisitions of excised organs. Brightfield, fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy confirmed solid lipid nanoparticles accumulation in hepatocytes without structural damage. Conclusion: Our results support the systemic biocompatibility of solid lipid nanoparticles and demonstrate their detailed biodistribution from the whole organism to organs until the cells

    An atlas of Mediterranean seismicity

    We present a description of the characteristics of the seismic deformation occurring in the Alpine Mediterranean Belt, and outline its association with tectonic and geologic features. We map seismic activity using several catalogues. Hypocentral data are retrieved from the Catalog of the International Seismological Center, the most comprehensive compilation of global data. Earthquake size and source geometry are instead evaluated from catalogs of earthquake mechanisms. These include seismic moment tensor catalogs (mainly the Harvard CMT Catalog, the Euro-Mediterranean Regional Centroid-Moment Tensors – RCMT Catalog and the regional moment tensor determination in the European-Mediterranean area – ETH Catalog) and a recent extensive compilation of solutions available in literature (EMMA) that provides consistency-controlled fault-plane solutions where mechanisms based on waveform fitting are missing. The study area follows the Africa-Eurasia margin from the Central Atlantic to Iran, and it has been divided into several provinces for the sake of presentation and graphic purposes. For each province, a brief geologic and tectonic description complements the outline of the pattern of seismicity, illustrated by several maps. Focal mechanisms are also grouped together to yield average mechanisms and enable synoptic views. A comprehensive bibliography is referenced. A CD-ROM accompanying this issue contains, besides maps, figures and results of local comparisons and summation of moment tensors with easy access via sensible maps, also an updated version of the EMMA focal mechanism database. Rather than an attempt at presenting a comprehensive seismotectonic model of the Mediterranean, this contribution aims to offer a panoramic view of the active tectonics as imaged by seismicity and focal mechanisms. Its scope may be seen as similar to that of an atlas, as a broad reference and a support for more specific studies

    Complete quantum teleportation with a Kerr nonlinearity

    We present a scheme for the quantum teleportation of the polarization state of a photon employing a cross-Kerr medium. The experimental feasibility of the scheme is discussed and we show that, using the recently demonstrated ultraslow light propagation in cold atomic media, our proposal can be realized with presently available technology.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 1 eps figur
