    Repeated aeolian deflation during the Allerød/GI-1a-c in the coversand lowland of NW Belgium

    The results of multi-disciplinary research carried out on the deposits of the Moerbeke "Driehoek" site, located along the northern bank of the extensive Moervaart palaeolake (NW Belgium), are presented. The multi-proxy study, including sedimentological (organic matter, calcium carbonate and grain-size) and botanical (pollen, macrofossils, NPP) analyses, provided evidence of repeated aeolian deflation during the Allerod. Our results demonstrate, in combination with evidence from other soil archives within the Moervaart area, that the Allerod period in NW Europe was sedimentologically much less stable than hitherto assumed, especially during the GI-1c2 event and middle Allerod. Some of the Allerod deflation events were caused by centennial abrupt climatic oscillations, such as the short but pronounced cold GI-1c2 event, while others were likely the result of intense forest fires or a combination of both. These observations call for a revision of the existing Lateglacial litho- and chronostratigraphic schemes for the sand-belt of northern Europe

Due to the special reinforcement mats, current design rules cannot be used to correctly predict the surface crack width and the ultimate punching load. Therefore, full-scale experiments have been carried out for six different reinforcement types. A fibre-reinforced floor with circular pile mat is the best solution, both for reducing the surface crack width and for optimizing the ultimate punching load

    Bacteria Hunt: A multimodal, multiparadigm BCI game

    Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) allow users to control applications by brain activity. Among their possible applications for non-disabled people, games are promising candidates. BCIs can enrich game play by the mental and affective state information they contain. During the eNTERFACE’09 workshop we developed the Bacteria Hunt game which can be played by keyboard and BCI, using SSVEP and relative alpha power. We conducted experiments in order to investigate what difference positive vs. negative neurofeedback would have on subjects’ relaxation states and how well the different BCI paradigms can be used together. We observed no significant difference in mean alpha band power, thus relaxation, and in user experience between the games applying positive and negative feedback. We also found that alpha power before SSVEP stimulation was significantly higher than alpha power during SSVEP stimulation indicating that there is some interference between the two BCI paradigms

    In opdracht van het Ministerie van Economische Zaken heeft Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research de belemmeringen en kansen van het verwaarden van voedselreststromen uit supermarkten in kaart gebracht. Uit de literatuur blijkt dat er nog veel onbekend is over de omvang van voedselrestromen, de preventie ervan en de verwaarding van deze reststromen in supermarkten. Daarom is een case study uitgevoerd om op basis van interviews met supermarktondernemers en reststroomverwerkers een actueel beeld te verkrijgen van (i) de huidige omvang van voedselverlies in supermarkten, (ii)de mogelijkheden tot het hoogwaardig verwerken van deze reststromen, (iii) de belemmeringen die hoogwaardig verwerking in de weg staan, en (iv) mogelijke manieren om deze belemmeringen weg te nemen

    Influence of labeling parameters and respiratory motion on velocity-selective arterial spin labeling for renal perfusion imaging

    Purpose Arterial transit time uncertainties and challenges during planning are potential issues for renal perfusion measurement using spatially selective arterial spin labeling techniques. To mitigate these potential issues, a spatially non-selective technique, such as velocity-selective arterial spin labeling (VSASL), could be an alternative. This article explores the influence of VSASL sequence parameters and respiratory induced motion on VS-label generation. Methods VSASL data were acquired in human subjects (n= 15), with both single and dual labeling, during paced-breathing, while essential sequence parameters were systematically varied; (1) cutoff velocity, (2) labeling gradient orientation and (3) post-labeling delay (PLD). Pseudo-continuous ASL was acquired as a spatially selective reference. In an additional free-breathing single VSASL experiment (n= 9) we investigated respiratory motion influence on VS-labeling. Absolute renal blood flow (RBF), perfusion weighted signal (PWS), and temporal signal-to-noise ratio (tSNR) were determined. Results (1) With decreasing cutoff velocity, tSNR and PWS increased. However, undesired tissue labeling occurred at low cutoff velocities (<= 5.4 cm/s). (2) Labeling gradient orientation had little effect on tSNR and PWS. (3) For single VSASL high signal appeared in the kidney pedicle at PLD < 800 ms, and tSNR and PWS decreased with increasing PLD. For dual VSASL, maximum tSNR occurred at PLD = 1200 ms. Average cortical RBF measured with dual VSASL (264 +/- 34 mL/min/100 g) at a cutoff velocity of 5.4 cm/s, and feet-head labeling was slightly lower than with pseudo-continuous ASL (283 +/- 55 mL/min/100 g). Conclusion With well-chosen sequence parameters, tissue labeling induced by respiratory motion can be minimized, allowing to obtain good quality RBF maps using planning-free labeling with dual VSASL.Cardiovascular Aspects of Radiolog

    A comparison of hirudin with heparin in the prevention of restenosis after coronary angioplasty

    __Background:__ The likelihood of restenosis is a major limitation of coronary angioplasty. We studied whether hirudin, a highly selective inhibitor of thrombin with irreversible effects, would prevent restenosis after angioplasty. We compared two regimens of recombinant hirudin with heparin. __Methods:__ We randomly assigned 1141 patients with unstable angina who were scheduled for angioplasty to receive one of three treatments: (1) a bolus dose of 10,000 IU of heparin followed by an intravenous infusion of heparin for 24 hours and subcutaneous placebo twice daily for three days (382 patients), (2) a bolus dose of 40 mg of hirudin followed by an intravenous infusion of hirudin for 24 hours and subcutaneous placebo twice daily for three days (381 patients), or (3) the same hirudin regimen except that 40 mg of hirudin was given subcutaneously instead of placebo twice daily for three days (378 patients). The primary end point was event-free survival at seven months. Other end points were early cardiac events (within 96 hours), bleeding and other complications of the study treatment, and angiographic measurements of coronary diameter at six months of follow-up. __Results:__ At seven months, event-free survival was 67.3 percent in the group receiving heparin, 63.5 percent in the group receiving intravenous hirudin, and 68.0 percent in the group receiving both intravenous and subcutaneous hirudin (P=0.61). However, the administration of hirudin was associated with a significant reduction in early cardiac events, which occurred in 11.0, 7.9, and 5.6 percent of patients in the respective groups (combined relative risk with hirudin, 0.61; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.41 to 0.90; P=0.023). The mean minimal luminal diameters in the respective groups on follow-up angiography at six months were 1.54, 1.47, and 1.56 mm. __Conclusions:__ Although significantly fewer early cardiac events occurred with hirudin than with heparin, hirudin had no apparent benefit with longer-term follow-up

    Systematic evaluation of velocity-selective arterial spin labeling settings for placental perfusion measurement

    Purpose: Placental function is key for successful human pregnancies. Perfusion may be a sensitive marker for the in vivo assessment of placental function. Arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI enables noninvasive measurement of tissue perfusion and it was recently suggested that ASL with velocity-selective (VS) labeling could be advantageous in the placenta. We systematically evaluated essential VS-ASL sequence parameters to determine optimal settings for efficient placental perfusion measurements.Methods: Eleven pregnant women were scanned at 3T using VS-ASL with 2D multislice echo planar imaging (EPI)-readout. One reference VS-ASL scan was acquired in all subjects; within subgroups the following parameters were systematically varied: cutoff velocity, velocity encoding direction, and inflow time. Visual evaluation and region of interest analyses were performed to compare perfusion signal differences between acquisitions.Results: In all subjects, a perfusion pattern with clear hyperintense focal regions was observed. Perfusion signal decreased with inflow time and cutoff velocity. Subject-specific dependence on velocity encoding direction was observed. High temporal signal-to-noise ratios with high contrast on the perfusion images between the hyperintense regions and placental tissue were seen at similar to 1.6 cm/s cutoff velocity and similar to 1000 ms inflow time. Evaluation of measurements at multiple inflow times revealed differences in blood flow dynamics between placental regions.Conclusion: Placental perfusion measurements are feasible at 3T using VS-ASL with 2D multislice EPI-readout. A clear dependence of perfusion signal on VS labeling parameters and inflow time was demonstrated. Whereas multiple parameter combinations may advance the interpretation of placental circulation dynamics, this study provides a basis to select an effective set of parameters for the observation of placenta perfusion natural history and its potential pathological changes.Cardiovascular Aspects of Radiolog

    Interactieve ontwerpmethodieken voor integrale duurzaamheid Toepassing van RIO in een aantal niet-veehouderij-gebonden cases

    RIO (Reflexief Interactief Ontwerpen) bestaat uit drie hoofdonderdelen: de (systeem)analysefase, de ontwerpfase en de verankeringsfase. RIO is ontstaan in een veehouderijcontext. Die context heeft een aantal specifieke eigenschappen, die toepassing van RIO in andere sectoren niet volledig vanzelfsprekend maakt. In een drietal projecten in de tuinbouw en biobased research is onderzocht in hoeverre (onderdelen van) RIO toepasbaar zijn in deze contexten. Gemeenschappelijk kenmerk van de cases die daarbij aan de orde waren was dat een technologisch kernidee het startpunt voor het ontwerpproces vormde, met een min of meer impliciete maatschappelijke problematiek die daarachter werd voorondersteld. De drie cases zijn: grasraffinage, Teelt de Grond Uit: bloembollen en appel, Teelt de grond uit: vinicultuur en aquaponics
