I nuovi immaginari dell'intelligenza artificiale

The paper aims to investigate the relationship between the artificial intelligence as narrated by science fiction movies in the late five decades and the socio-technical imaginary related to intelligent systems. The first sci-fi movies in analysis shed away from the idea of a symbiotic interaction between humans and AI as forecast during the 1960s by informatics and AI scientists. Afterwards, from the 1970s to the 1990s, AI systems played mainly the role of mirrors for the crisis of human identity: in these narratives the AI is presented as a risk, a possible enemy for human kind. Finally, during the last twenty years, a new frontier of AI seems to emerge in the imaginary. More recent stories forecast a future in which intelligent systems try to take their own place in the human social environment. All these perspectives emerge in conjunction with innovations and technical experimentations, bringing back up the relationship between “legein” and “teukein” as theorized by Cornelius Castoriadis

A discrete Bochner-Martinelli formula

In the even dimensional case the discrete Dirac equation may be reduced to the so-called discrete isotonic Dirac system in which suitable Dirac operators appear from both sides in half the dimension. This is an appropriated framework for the development of a discrete Martinelli-Bochner formula for discrete holomorphic functions on the simplest of all graphs, the rectangular Z(m) one. Two lower-dimensional cases are considered explicitly to illustrate the closed analogy with the theory of continuous variables and the developed discrete scheme

La droga zombie. Analisi di un fenomeno comunicativo

Questo contributo ha come principale obiettivo quello di applicare un approccio culturale e sociocomunicativo ad un fenomeno normalmente oggetto di spiegazioni scientifiche di carattere prettamente medico. Le nuove droghe sintetiche, molto differenti dalle droghe allucinatorie di carattere sintetico tipiche delle sperimentazioni personali e collettive dei movimenti culturali del ‘900, propongono delle tipologie di esperienza che paiono sempre meno comprese dalla cultura di massa. Se personaggi come Aldous Huxley, i Beatles, Timothy Leary, Andy Wharol, William Burroughs, Janis Joplin, Kerouac e in generale la corrente della beat generation ha permesso di dare un senso culturale di tipo generazionale alle droghe sintetiche (ed in particola l’LSD), le ricostruzioni delle entelechie generazionali (Mannheim, 1928, 1974) prodotte dall’uso delle nuove tipologie di droghe non permette al giorno d’oggi di disegnare un quadro “creativo” dello stesso ordine. L’ipotesi, da approfondire e condividere in modo critico è la seguente: le costruzioni sociali di senso prodotte dalle esperienze di sballo, fuoriuscita da sé, perdita del controllo, determinate dalle droghe sintetiche, non sono in questa fase storica orientate da una ricerca di senso che vada al di là del pauroso e del nonsense, senza rispettare una finalità o una forma collettiva precisa. Forse, sono più le condivisioni e le ricostruzioni mediali che offrono a tali droghe uno statuto di senso condiviso, ma non assistiamo al risultato di un “account”, di un ritorno discorsivo, prodotto e condiviso dagli attori dell’esperienza vissuta attraverso la droga. Il caso recente della MDPV – metilenediossipirovalerone – rappresenta un contraltare esemplificativo dell’ipotesi formulata e delle sue ricadute sul modo di esperire, pensare, ricostruire socialmente il rapporto con una droga e le sue rappresentazioni

In this paper, using the algebraic structure of the space of circulant (2 × 2) matrix, we characterize the dual of the (Frechet) space of germs of left Hermitean monogenic matrix functions in a compact set of Euclidean space with even di;ension. As an application we describe the dual space of the so-called h-monogenic functions satisfying simultaneously two Dirac type equations

Generalized Moisil-Théodoresco systems and Cauchy integral decompositions

Let ℝ0,m+1(s) be the space of s-vectors (0≤s≤m+1) in the Clifford algebra ℝ0,m+1 constructed over the quadratic vector space ℝ0,m+1, let r,p,q∈ℕ with 0≤r≤m+1, 0≤p≤q, and r+2q≤m+1, and let ℝ0,m+1(r,p,q)=∑j=pq⨁ ℝ0,m+1(r+2j). Then, an ℝ0,m+1(r,p,q)-valued smooth function W defined in an open subset Ω⊂ℝm+1 is said to satisfy the generalized Moisil-Théodoresco system of type (r,p,q) if ∂xW=0 in Ω, where ∂x is the Dirac operator in ℝm+1. A structure theorem is proved for such functions, based on the construction of conjugate harmonic pairs. Furthermore, if Ω is bounded with boundary Γ, where Γ is an Ahlfors-David regular surface, and if W is a ℝ0,m+1(r,p,q)-valued Hölder continuous function on Γ, then necessary and sufficient conditions are given under which W admits on Γ a Cauchy integral decomposition W=W++W−

Symmetrical angle switched single-phase and three-phase rectifiers: application to micro hydro power plants

Micro-size hydro power plants are commonly used at remote areas to supply islanded AC microgrids. A typical way to control grid frequency is to manipulate active power dissipated in ballast loads by AC/AC converters. However, these asymmetrically switched thyristor controlled converters consume reactive power degrading the power factor at the generator output. In this paper the operation of a symmetric angle switched, bridged three-phase rectifier and three single-phase rectifiers connected in series with ballast load, are studied to improve the power factor of the system. As a consequence, the objective is to evaluated the use of the three and single-phase rectifiers switched with symmetrical angle to improve the power factor, by reactive power compensation, at the output terminal of the electric generator of µHPPs that use ballast load to regulate frequency.Postprint (published version
