Lessons Learned from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Operations
Astronomy is changing. Large projects, large collaborations, and large
budgets are becoming the norm. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is one
example of this new astronomy, and in operating the original survey, we put in
place and learned many valuable operating principles. Scientists sometimes have
the tendency to invent everything themselves but when budgets are large,
deadlines are many, and both are tight, learning from others and applying it
appropriately can make the difference between success and failure. We offer
here our experiences well as our thoughts, opinions, and beliefs on what we

Stellar SEDs from 0.3 to 2.5 μm: Tracing the Stellar Locus and Searching for Color Outliers in the SDSS and 2MASS
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) are rich resources for studying stellar astrophysics and the structure and formation history of the Galaxy. As new surveys and instruments adopt similar filter sets, it is increasingly important to understand the properties of the ugrizJHK_s stellar locus, both to inform studies of "normal" main-sequence stars and enable robust searches for point sources with unusual colors. Using a sample of ~600,000 point sources detected by SDSS and 2MASS, we tabulate the position and width of the ugrizJHK_s stellar locus as a function of g - i color, and provide accurate polynomial fits. We map the Morgan-Keenan spectral type sequence to the median stellar locus by using synthetic photometry of spectral standards and by analyzing 3000 SDSS stellar spectra with a custom spectral typing pipeline, described in the Appendix to this paper. We develop an algorithm to calculate a point source's minimum separation from the stellar locus in a seven-dimensional color space, and use it to robustly identify objects with unusual colors, as well as spurious SDSS/2MASS matches. Analysis of a final catalog of 2117 color outliers identifies 370 white-dwarf/M dwarf (WDMD) pairs, 93 QSOs, and 90 M giant/carbon star candidates, and demonstrates that WDMD pairs and QSOs can be distinguished on the basis of their J - K_s and r - z colors. We also identify a group of objects with correlated offsets in the u - g versus g - r and g - r versus r - i color-color spaces, but subsequent follow-up is required to reveal the nature of these objects. Future applications of this algorithm to a matched SDSS-UKIDSS catalog may well identify additional classes of objects with unusual colors by probing new areas of color-magnitude space
SDSS Data Management and Photometric Quality Assessment
We summarize the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data acquisition and processing
steps, and describe runQA, a pipeline designed for automated data quality
assessment. In particular, we show how the position of the stellar locus in
color-color diagrams can be used to estimate the accuracy of photometric
zeropoint calibration to better than 0.01 mag in 0.03 deg2 patches. Using this
method, we estimate that typical photometric zeropoint calibration errors for
SDSS imaging data are not larger than ~0.01 mag in the g, r, and i bands, 0.02
mag in the z band, and 0.03 mag in the u band (root-mean-scatter for zeropoint

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Catalog I. Early Data Release
We present the first edition of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar
Catalog. The catalog consists of the 3814 objects (3000 discovered by the SDSS)
in the initial SDSS public data release that have at least one emission line
with a full width at half maximum larger than 1000 km/s, luminosities brighter
than M_i^* = -23, and highly reliable redshifts. The area covered by the
catalog is 494 square degrees; the majority of the objects were found in SDSS
commissioning data using a multicolor selection technique. The quasar redshifts
range from 0.15 to 5.03. For each object the catalog presents positions
accurate to better than 0.2" rms per coordinate, five band (ugriz) CCD-based
photometry with typical accuracy of 0.05 mag, radio and X-ray emission
properties, and information on the morphology and selection method. Calibrated
spectra of all objects in the catalog, covering the wavelength region 3800 to
9200 Angstroms at a spectral resolution of 1800-2100, are also available. Since
the quasars were selected during the commissioning period, a time when the
quasar selection algorithm was undergoing frequent revisions, the sample is not

The First Hour of Extra-galactic Data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Spectroscopic Commissioning: The Coma Cluster
On 26 May 1999, one of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) fiber-fed
spectrographs saw astronomical first light. This was followed by the first
spectroscopic commissioning run during the dark period of June 1999. We present
here the first hour of extra-galactic spectroscopy taken during these early
commissioning stages: an observation of the Coma cluster of galaxies. Our data
samples the Southern part of this cluster, out to a radius of 1.5degrees and
thus fully covers the NGC 4839 group. We outline in this paper the main
characteristics of the SDSS spectroscopic systems and provide redshifts and
spectral classifications for 196 Coma galaxies, of which 45 redshifts are new.
For the 151 galaxies in common with the literature, we find excellent agreement
between our redshift determinations and the published values. As part of our
analysis, we have investigated four different spectral classification
algorithms: spectral line strengths, a principal component decomposition, a
wavelet analysis and the fitting of spectral synthesis models to the data. We
find that a significant fraction (25%) of our observed Coma galaxies show signs
of recent star-formation activity and that the velocity dispersion of these
active galaxies (emission-line and post-starburst galaxies) is 30% larger than
the absorption-line galaxies. We also find no active galaxies within the
central (projected) 200 h-1 Kpc of the cluster. The spatial distribution of our
Coma active galaxies is consistent with that found at higher redshift for the
CNOC1 cluster survey. Beyond the core region, the fraction of bright active
galaxies appears to rise slowly out to the virial radius and are randomly
distributed within the cluster with no apparent correlation with the potential

The Fifth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
This paper describes the Fifth Data Release (DR5) of the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey (SDSS). DR5 includes all survey quality data taken through June 2005 and
represents the completion of the SDSS-I project (whose successor, SDSS-II will
continue through mid-2008). It includes five-band photometric data for 217
million objects selected over 8000 square degrees, and 1,048,960 spectra of
galaxies, quasars, and stars selected from 5713 square degrees of that imaging
data. These numbers represent a roughly 20% increment over those of the Fourth
Data Release; all the data from previous data releases are included in the
present release. In addition to "standard" SDSS observations, DR5 includes
repeat scans of the southern equatorial stripe, imaging scans across M31 and
the core of the Perseus cluster of galaxies, and the first spectroscopic data
from SEGUE, a survey to explore the kinematics and chemical evolution of the
Galaxy. The catalog database incorporates several new features, including
photometric redshifts of galaxies, tables of matched objects in overlap regions
of the imaging survey, and tools that allow precise computations of survey

The Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
This paper describes the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS), marking the completion of the original goals of the SDSS and the end of
the phase known as SDSS-II. It includes 11663 deg^2 of imaging data, with most
of the roughly 2000 deg^2 increment over the previous data release lying in
regions of low Galactic latitude. The catalog contains five-band photometry for
357 million distinct objects. The survey also includes repeat photometry over
250 deg^2 along the Celestial Equator in the Southern Galactic Cap. A
coaddition of these data goes roughly two magnitudes fainter than the main
survey. The spectroscopy is now complete over a contiguous area of 7500 deg^2
in the Northern Galactic Cap, closing the gap that was present in previous data
releases. There are over 1.6 million spectra in total, including 930,000
galaxies, 120,000 quasars, and 460,000 stars. The data release includes
improved stellar photometry at low Galactic latitude. The astrometry has all
been recalibrated with the second version of the USNO CCD Astrograph Catalog
(UCAC-2), reducing the rms statistical errors at the bright end to 45
milli-arcseconds per coordinate. A systematic error in bright galaxy photometr
is less severe than previously reported for the majority of galaxies. Finally,
we describe a series of improvements to the spectroscopic reductions, including
better flat-fielding and improved wavelength calibration at the blue end,
better processing of objects with extremely strong narrow emission lines, and

Human resource management as a profession in South Africa
Orientation: Various countries recognise human resource (HR) management as a bona fide profession.
Research purpose: The objective of this study was to establish whether one could regard HR management, as practised in South Africa, as a profession.
Motivation for the study: Many countries are reviewing the professionalisation of HR management. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the professional standing of HR management in South Africa.
Research design, approach and method: The researchers used a purposive sampling strategy involving 95 participants. The researchers achieved triangulation by analysing original documents of the regulating bodies of the medical, legal, engineering and accounting professions internationally and locally as well as the regulating bodies of HR management in the United Kingdom (UK), the United States of America (USA) and Canada. Seventy- eight HR professionals registered with the South African Board for People Practices (SABPP) completed a questionnaire. The researchers analysed the data using content analysis and Lawshe’s Content Validity Ratio (CVR).
Main findings: The results confirm that HR management in South Africa adheres to the four main pillars of professionalism and is a bona fide profession.
Practical/managerial implications: The article highlights the need to regulate and formalise HR management in South Africa.
Contribution/value-add: This study identifies a number of aspects that determine professionalism and isolates the most important elements that one needs to consider when regulating the HR profession
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Catalog III. Third Data Release
We present the third edition of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar
Catalog. The catalog consists of the 46,420 objects in the SDSS Third Data
Release that have luminosities larger than M_i = -22 (in a cosmology with H_0 =
70 km/s/Mpc, Omega_M = 0.3, and Omega_Lambda = 0.7), have at least one emission
line with FWHM larger than 1000 km/s or are unambiguously broad absorption line
quasars, are fainter than i = 15.0, and have highly reliable redshifts. The
area covered by the catalog is 4188 sq. deg. The quasar redshifts range from
0.08 to 5.41, with a median value of 1.47; the high-redshift sample includes
520 quasars at redshifts greater than four, of which 17 are at redshifts
greater than five. For each object the catalog presents positions accurate to
better than 0.2 arcsec. rms per coordinate, five-band (ugriz) CCD-based
photometry with typical accuracy of 0.03 mag, and information on the morphology
and selection method. The catalog also contains radio, near-infrared, and X-ray
emission properties of the quasars, when available, from other large-area
surveys. The calibrated digital spectra cover the wavelength region 3800--9200A
at a spectral resolution about 2000; the spectra can be retrieved from the
public database using the information provided in the catalog. A total of
44,221 objects in the catalog were discovered by the SDSS; 28,400 of the SDSS
