Narrating commercialisation: Swedish university researchers and outreach

This paper is a qualitative study of commercialisation activities in Swedish universities from the perspective of researchers. Our goal is twofold: (i) to elucidate researchers’ understanding of the meaning of concept of commercialisation and (ii) their reasons for engaging in this activity. By providing insight into researchers understanding and rationale for engaging in commercialisation activities, we hope to contribute to deepening understanding of commercialisation and ultimately improving practice. Our findings are that there is a significant amount of activity with respect commercialisation of research taking place within the Swedish universities studied. We found that contrary to the received view which has it that the social sciences and the humanities are also involved in commercialisation activities although researchers in this part of the academy rarely reported themselves as engaging in the commercialisation. We also found that regardless of disciplinary background, firm formation is the aspect of commercialisation to which researchers are most ambivalent.Commercialisation, humanities, social science, firm formation, third stream, outreach

Extreme Value Statistics in Silicon Photonics

L-shape probability distributions are extremely non-Gaussian functions that have been surprisingly successful in describing the occurrence of extreme events ranging from stock market crashes, natural disasters, structure of biological systems, fractals, and optical rogue waves. We show that fluctuations in stimulated Raman scattering, as well as in coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering, in silicon can follow extreme value statistics and provide mathematical insight into the origin of this behavior

En næringsforenings strategi mot vekst. En casestudie av strategiprosessen "2000 nye".

Tema for denne oppgaven er strategisk ledelse. Oppgaven stiller spørsmål om hvordan strategisk ledelse utøves i en spesifikk kontekst, ved å undersøke en strategiprosess initiert av en næringsforening. Hensikten med studien er å bidra til økt innsikt i hvordan næringsforeninger utøver strategisk ledelse, noe som gjennom en omfattende litteraturgjennomgang viser seg å være mangelvare. Problemstillingen for avhandlingen er: Hva kjennetegner en næringsforenings strategiprosess? Problemstillingen svares ut gjennom en kvalitativ casestudie, der Næringsforeningen i Tromsøregionens (NFTR) strategiprosess «2000 nye» utforskes. Jeg har intervjuet syv aktører som knyttet til strategiprosessen, nemlig NFTR, styret, kommunen og aktører innenfor havbruk og reiseliv. I tillegg har jeg supplert med data fra en observasjon og gjennom dokumentanalyse. For å svare på problemstillingen har jeg benyttet strategy-as-practice-rammeverket i kombinasjon med sensemaking-teori og tradisjonell strategilitteratur. Næringsforeningers strategiprosesser fremstår som unike, fordi de ikke selv skal skape arbeidsplasser og fordi de har en spesiell posisjon i markedet. Deres arbeid går ut på å skape engasjement og legge til rette for at medlemsbedrifter skal vokse, noe som gjør at strategiprosessene deres vil inkludere mange ulike bedrifter og aktører. Selv om «2000 nye» fremstår som spesiell, viser funn fra denne studien at en strategiprosess initiert av en næringsforening også har flere kjennetegn som kan kobles til det tradisjonelle synet på strategi, som innebærer en planlagt og lineær prosess som foregår innad i en organisasjon. Samtidig viser også funn at deltakere har ulik involvering som fører til ulik meningsdannelse knyttet til prosessen, der det er et skille mellom næringsforeningen og øvrige aktører. Funn viser at næringsforeningen og styret i større grad ser «2000 nye» som en helhetlig og planlagt prosess, mens øvrige aktører har vært mindre involvert og dermed ikke har den samme oversikten

FWF Clusters of Excellence. Evaluation of the selection process for the first call for proposals

In 2021, the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) launched its Clusters of Excellence (CoE) programme as the first stage in the excellent=austria initiative. The plan was to fund about four clusters – consisting of three to eight collaborating organisations each – selected based on a 2-stage international peer review process. The clusters’ annual budgets can be €2 to 7 million, of which the FWF funds 60% and the research institutions hosting the clusters the remaining 40%. FWF provides funding for five years, with the possibility of an additional five years. This report presents the results of an accompanying evaluation of the selection procedures for the first call for Clusters of Excellence, and recommendations for developing the procedures for the second call. It is based on analyses of application and review data, surveys to applicants and expert reviewers, interviews with host institutions, members of the international jury assessing the proposals, the FWF board and other stakeholders, as well as observation of jury meetings.
