    Multimodal transition and stochastic antiresonance in squid giant axons

    The experimental data of N. Takahashi, Y. Hanyu, T. Musha, R. Kubo, and G. Matsumoto, Physica D \textbf{43}, 318 (1990), on the response of squid giant axons stimulated by periodic sequence of short current pulses is interpreted within the Hodgkin-Huxley model. The minimum of the firing rate as a function of the stimulus amplitude I0I_0 in the high-frequency regime is due to the multimodal transition. Below this singular point only odd multiples of the driving period remain and the system is highly sensitive to noise. The coefficient of variation has a maximum and the firing rate has a minimum as a function of the noise intensity which is an indication of the stochastic coherence antiresonance. The model calculations reproduce the frequency of occurrence of the most common modes in the vicinity of the transition. A linear relation of output frequency vs. I0I_0 for above the transition is also confirmed.Comment: 5 pages, 9 figure

    Injury to the skin, and the subsequent release of noncoding double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) from necrotic keratinocytes, has been identified as an endogenous activator of Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3). As changes in keratinocyte growth and differentiation follow injury, we hypothesized that TLR3 might trigger some elements of the barrier repair program in keratinocytes. dsRNA was observed to induce TLR3-dependent increases in human keratinocyte mRNA abundance for ABCA12 (ATP-binding cassette, sub-family A, member 12), glucocerebrosidase, acid sphingomyelinase, and transglutaminase 1. Additionally, treatment with dsRNA resulted in increases in sphingomyelin and morphologic changes including increased epidermal lipid staining by Oil Red O and TLR3-dependent increases in lamellar bodies and keratohyalin granules. These observations show that dsRNA can stimulate some events in keratinocytes that are important for skin barrier repair and maintenance

    Variability of the total ozone trend over Europe for the period 1950?2004 derived from reconstructed data

    International audienceThe total ozone data over Europe are available for only few ground-based stations in the pre-satellite era disallowing examination of the spatial trend variability over the whole continent. A need of having gridded ozone data for a trend analysis and input to radiative transfer models stimulated a reconstruction of the daily ozone values since January 1950. Description of the reconstruction model and its validation were a subject of our previous paper. The data base used was built within the objectives of the COST action 726 "Long-term changes and climatology of UV radiation over Europe". Here we focus on trend analyses. The long-term variability of total ozone is discussed using results of a flexible trend model applied to the reconstructed total ozone data for the period 1950?2004. The trend pattern, which comprises both anthropogenic and "natural" component, is not a priori assumed but it comes from a smooth curve fit to the zonal monthly means and monthly grid values. The ozone long-term changes are calculated separately for cold (October?next year April) and warm (May?September) seasons. The confidence intervals for the estimated ozone changes are derived by the block bootstrapping. The statistically significant negative trends are found almost over the whole Europe only in the period 1985?1994. Negative trends up to ?3% per decade appeared over small areas in earlier periods when the anthropogenic forcing on the ozone layer was weak . The statistically positive trends are found only during warm seasons 1995?2004 over Svalbard archipelago. The reduction of ozone level in 2004 relative to that before the satellite era is not dramatic, i.e., up to ~?5% and ~?3.5% in the cold and warm subperiod, respectively. Present ozone level is still depleted over many popular resorts in southern Europe and northern Africa. For high latitude regions the trend overturning could be inferred in last decade (1995?2004) as the ozone depleted areas are not found there in 2004 in spite of substantial ozone depletion in the period 1985?1994

    The absolute rate constant was measured by the technique of flash photolysis-laser induced fluorescence (FP-LIF). NH2 radicals were produced by the flash photolysis of ammonia and the fluorescent NH2 photons were measured by multiscaling techniques. At each temperature, the results were independent of variations in total pressure, and flash intensity. The results are compared with previous determinations using the techniques of mass spectrometry, absorption spectroscopy, laser absorption spectroscopy, and laser induced fluorescence. The implications of the results are discussed with regard to combustion, post combustion, and atmospheric chemistry. The results are also discussed theoretically

    Thermal X-ray emission from shocked ejecta in Type Ia Supernova Remnants. Prospects for explosion mechanism identification

    The explosion mechanism behind Type Ia supernovae is a matter of continuing debate. The diverse attempts to identify or at least constrain the physical processes involved in the explosion have been only partially successful so far. In this paper we propose to use the thermal X-ray emission from young supernova remnants originated in Type Ia events to extract relevant information concerning the explosions themselves. We have produced a grid of thermonuclear supernova models representative of the paradigms currently under debate: pure deflagrations, delayed detonations, pulsating delayed detonations and sub-Chandrasekhar explosions, using their density and chemical composition profiles to simulate the interaction with the surrounding ambient medium and the ensuing plasma heating, non-equilibrium ionization and thermal X-ray emission of the ejecta. Key observational parameters such as electron temperatures, emission measures and ionization time scales are presented and discussed. We find that not only is it possible to identify the explosion mechanism from the spectra of young Type Ia Supernova Remnants, it is in fact necessary to take the detailed ejecta structure into account if such spectra are to be modeled in a self-consistent way. Neither element line flux ratios nor element emission measures are good estimates of the true ratios of ejected masses, with differences of as much as two or three orders of magnitude for a given model. Comparison with observations of the Tycho SNR suggests a delayed detonation as the most probable explosion mechanism. Line strengths, line ratios, and the centroid of the Fe Kalpha line are reasonably well reproduced by a model of this kind.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures (5 of them color), accepted for publication by the Ap

    INTEGRAL observations of PSR B0540-69

    PSR B0540-69 is often called an extragalactic 'twin' of the Crab pulsar in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The pulsar is embedded in a synchrotron nebula in the center of SNR 0540-69.3. It was discovered with the Einstein satellite with P~50 ms, spin-down age of ~1500 years and a spin-down luminosity of ~10^38 erg/s. It has since been detected with all major X-ray telescopes. At X-ray energies up to ~40 keV the latest observations were reported from RXTE and from INTEGRAL (only spectrum) in the context of a survey of the LMC. Optical pulsed emission and faint radio emission have also been found from PSR B0540-69. The INTEGRAL analysis presented here is based on observations of the LMC obtained in Jan. 2003 and Jan. 2004 with a total exposure of ~1.5 Ms. In the mosaic maps from the total exposure (JEM-X and IBIS/ISGRI) a source at the location of PSR B0540-69 is clearly visible up to energies of ~200 keV. After barycentric correction and determination of the pulsar phases, based on theephemeris available from contemporaneous RXTE data, the lightcurves show the characteristic shape of a broad pulse up into the 40-100 keV band. At higher energies no significant pulsation is detectable. We derive the spectrum of the total source from the ISGRI data. The photon spectrum can be fitted with a power law of index 2.22, which is compatible with the result found by Goetz et al., 2006.Comment: Proceedings of the 363.
