    Probing the ejecta of evolved massive stars in transition: A VLT/SINFONI K-band survey

    Massive evolved stars in transition phases, such as Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs), B[e] Supergiants (B[e]SGs), and Yellow Hypergiants (YHGs), are not well understood, and yet crucial steps in determining accurate stellar and galactic evolution models. The circumstellar environments of these stars reveal their mass-loss history, identifying clues to both their individual evolutionary status and the connection between objects of different phases. Here we present a survey of 25 such evolved massive stars (16 B[e]SGs, 6 LBVs, 2 YHGs, and 1 Peculiar Oe star), observed in the K-band with the Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observation in the Near-Infrared (SINFONI; R = 4500) on the ESO VLT UT4 8 m telescope. The sample can be split into two categories based on spectral morphology: one group includes all of the B[e]SGs, the Peculiar Oe star, and two of the LBVs, while the other includes the YHGs and the rest of the LBVs. The difference in LBV spectral appearance is due to some objects being in a quiescent phase and some objects being in an active or outburst phase. CO emission features are found in 13 of our targets, with first time detections for MWC 137, LHA 120-S 35, and LHA 115-S 65. From model fits to the CO band heads, the emitting regions appear to be detached from the stellar surface. Each star with ^12CO features also shows ^13CO emission, signaling an evolved nature. Based on the level of ^13C enrichment, we conclude that many of the B[e]SGs are likely in a pre-Red Supergiant phase of their evolution. There appears to be a lower luminosity limit of log L/L_solar = 5.0 below which CO is not detected. The lack of CO features in several high luminosity B[e]SGs and variability in others suggests that they may in fact be LBV candidates, strengthening the connection between these two very similar transition phases.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables.     Sobre la identidad y el estatus de Desmanthus (Leguminosae, clado Mimosoideae) en Macaronesia

    In this paper, the identity and degree of naturalization of Desmanthus (Leguminosae, Mimosoid clade) in the Canary Islands (Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura) and Cape Verde (Santo Antão, São Vicente) are critically re-assessed. The study of morphological features of the plant material sampled allowed to conclude that all specimens must be assigned to D. pernambucanus, instead of D. virgatus as previously thought. Previous records for D. virgatus from Macaronesia still require confirmation but are probably all erroneous. D. pernambucanus is well-established and the number of populations is increasing in the studied area. The species can be classified as an environmental weed or even as a transformer species in natural habitats, often barrancos. The results also show that the distinction between D. pernambucanus and D. virgatus is not always clear-cut and that for an accurate identification the study of living material usually is required.En este artículo se reevalúa la identidad y grado de naturalización del género Desmanthus (Leguminosae, clado Mimosoideae) en diversas áreas de las Islas Canarias (Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura) y de Cabo Verde (Santo Antão, São Vicente). El estudio de los caracteres morfológicos del material vegetal permitió concluir que todos los especímenes deben ser asignados a D. pernambucanus, en lugar de a D. virgatus, como se pensaba hasta ahora. Los registros previos de D. virgatus para Macaronesia requieren confirmación, pero posiblemente sean todos erróneos. Desmanthus pernambucanus está bien establecido en la zona estudiada y el número de poblaciones se está incrementando. La especie puede ser clasificada como “mala hierba alóctona” o, incluso, como una especie transformadora en hábitats naturales, especialmente en barrancos.     Imaging 3D seismic velocity along the seismogenic zone of Algarve region (southern Portugal)

    The present seismic tomographic study is focused around Algarve region, in South of Portugal. To locate the seismic events and find the local velocity structure of epicentral area, the P and S arrival times at 38 stations are used. The data used in this study were obtained during the Algarve campaign which worked from January/2006 to July/2007. The preliminary estimate of origin times and hypocentral coordinates are determined by the Hy- poinverse program. Linearized inversion procedure was applied to comprise the following two steps: 1) finding the minimum 1D velocity model using Velest and 2) simultaneous relocation of hypocenters and determination of local velocity structure. The velocity model we have reached is a 10 layer model which gave the lowest RMS, after several runnings of eight different velocity models that we used “a priori”. The model parameterization assumes a continuous velocity field between 4.5 km/s and 7.0 km/s until 30 km depth. The earth structure is represented in 3D by velocity at discrete points, and velocity at any intervening point is determined by linear interpolation among the surrounding eight grid points. A preliminary analysis of the resolution capabilities of the dataset, based on the Derivative Weight Sum (DWS) distribution, shows that the velocity structure is better resolved in the West part of the region between the surface to15 km. The resulting tomographic image has a prominent low-velocity anomaly that shows a maximum decrease in P-wave velocity in the first 12 kms in the studied region. We also identified the occurrence of local seismic events of reduced magnitude not catalogued, in the neighbourhood of Almodôvar (low Alentejo). The spatial distribution of epicentres defines a NE-SW direction that coincides with the strike of the mapped geological faults of the region and issued from photo-interpretation. Is still expectable to refine the seismicity of the region of Almodôvar and establish more rigorously its role in the seismotectonic picture of the region. This work is expected to produce a more detailed knowledge of the structure of the crust over the region of Algarve, being able to identify seismogenic zones, potentially generators of significant seismic events and also the identification of zones of active faults

    Alterations in brain connectivity due to plasticity and synaptic delay

    Brain plasticity refers to brain's ability to change neuronal connections, as a result of environmental stimuli, new experiences, or damage. In this work, we study the effects of the synaptic delay on both the coupling strengths and synchronisation in a neuronal network with synaptic plasticity. We build a network of Hodgkin-Huxley neurons, where the plasticity is given by the Hebbian rules. We verify that without time delay the excitatory synapses became stronger from the high frequency to low frequency neurons and the inhibitory synapses increases in the opposite way, when the delay is increased the network presents a non-trivial topology. Regarding the synchronisation, only for small values of the synaptic delay this phenomenon is observed

    LIQUID METAL FLOW CONTROL BY DC ELECTROMAGNETIC PUMPS

    The cooling system of high-density thermal power requires fluids of high thermal conductivity, such as liquid metals. Electromagnetic pumps can be used to liquid metal fluid flow control in cooling circuits. The operation of electromagnetic pumps used to flow control is based on Lorentz force. This force can be achieved by magnetic field and electric current interaction, controlled by external independent power supplies. This work presents the electromagnetic pump operational principles, the IEAv development scheme and the BEMC-1 simulation code. The theoretical results of BEMC-1simulation are compared to electromagnetic pump operation experimental data, validating the BEMC-1 code. This code is used to evaluate the DC electromagnetic pump performance applied to Mercury flow control and others liquid metal such as Sodium, Lead and Bismuth, used in nuclear fast reactors

    A PARAMETRIC STUDY AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF DC ELECTROMAGNETIC PUMPS WITH BEMC-1 CODE

    Electromagnetic pumps are used to control liquid metal fluid flow in cooling loops. The principle of operation of an electromagnetic pump is based on Lorentz’s force. This is obtained by interaction of the magnetic field and the electrical current, imposed and adjusted by independent external electric power sources. In this work are presented the continuous current electromagnetic pumps, their basic equations and the BEMC-1 code, developed for design and performance evaluation of a DC electromagnetic pump. The main objective of this paper is a parametric study for magnetic induction, static pressure, fluid flow and performance evaluation of the pump. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental data to get adjust factors to be used in the BEMC-1 code. In this way the BEMC-1 code can be validated and used in the evaluations and projects of DC electromagnetic pumps

    Inhomogeneous molecular ring around the B[e] supergiant LHA 120-S 73

    We aim to improve our knowledge on the structure and dynamics of the circumstellar disk of the LMC B[e] supergiant LHA 120-S 73. High-resolution optical and near-IR spectroscopic data were obtained over a period of 16 and 7 years, respectively. The spectra cover the diagnostic emission lines from [CaII] and [OI], as well as the CO bands. These features trace the disk at different distances from the star. We analyzed the kinematics of the individual emission regions by modeling their emission profiles. A low-resolution mid-infrared spectrum was obtained as well, which provides information on the composition of the dusty disk. All diagnostic emission features display double-peaked line profiles, which we interpret as due to Keplerian rotation. We find that LHA 120-S 73 is surrounded by at least four individual rings of material with alternating densities (or by a disk with strongly non-monotonic radial density distribution). Moreover, we find that the molecular ring must have gaps or at least strong density inhomogeneities, or in other words, a clumpy structure. The mid-infrared spectrum displays features of oxygen- and carbon-rich grain species, which indicates a long-lived, stable dusty disk. We cannot confirm the previously reported high value for the stellar rotation velocity. The line profile of HeI 5876 A is strongly variable in both width and shape and resembles of those seen in non-radially pulsating stars. A proper determination of the real underlying stellar rotation velocity is hence not possible. The existence of multiple stable and clumpy rings of alternating density recalls ring structures around planets. Although there is currently insufficient observational evidence, it is tempting to propose a scenario with one (or more) minor bodies or planets revolving around LHA 120-S 73 and stabilizing the ring system, in analogy to the shepherd moons in planetary systems.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure, accepted for pulication in A&
