An infrared diagnostic for magnetism in hot stars

Magnetospheric observational proxies are used for indirect detection of magnetic fields in hot stars in the X-ray, UV, optical, and radio wavelength ranges. To determine the viability of infrared (IR) hydrogen recombination lines as a magnetic diagnostic for these stars, we have obtained low-resolution (R~1200), near-IR spectra of the known magnetic B2V stars HR 5907 and HR 7355, taken with the Ohio State Infrared Imager/Spectrometer (OSIRIS) attached to the 4.1m Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) Telescope. Both stars show definite variable emission features in IR hydrogen lines of the Brackett series, with similar properties as those found in optical spectra, including the derived location of the detected magnetospheric plasma. These features also have the added advantage of a lowered contribution of stellar flux at these wavelengths, making circumstellar material more easily detectable. IR diagnostics will be useful for the future study of magnetic hot stars, to detect and analyze lower-density environments, and to detect magnetic candidates in areas obscured from UV and optical observations, increasing the number of known magnetic stars to determine basic formation properties and investigate the origin of their magnetic fields.Comment: 4 pages, accepted for publication in A&

Scattering and Bound State Green's Functions on a Plane via so(2,1) Lie Algebra

We calculate the Green's functions for the particle-vortex system, for two anyons on a plane with and without a harmonic regulator and in a uniform magnetic field. These Green's functions which describe scattering or bound states (depending on the specific potential in each case) are obtained exactly using an algebraic method related to the SO(2,1) Lie group. From these Green's functions we obtain the corresponding wave functions and for the bound states we also find the energy spectra.Comment: 21 Latex pages. Typos corrected. Results unchanged.

ABSTRACT: The dataset presented here is the delivery of the European project “Integrated Pest Management of the Invasive Japanese Beetle, Popillia japonica (IPM-Popillia)”. This project aims to address the challenge of a new risk to plant health in Europe, the invasion of the Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica, and to provide an environmentally friendly IPM-Toolbox to control the pest in infested areas, protecting the agricultural systems and control this pest populations current in expansion across Europe. The present study targets to record, in maize and pasture fields of the Azores, ground arthropods with the potential to be used in futures Integrated Pest Management programs against P. japonica. A sampling program was conducted in two Islands (São Miguel and São Jorge) in the summer of 2022.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A Memetic Analysis of a Phrase by Beethoven: Calvinian Perspectives on Similarity and Lexicon-Abstraction

    Get PDF
This article discusses some general issues arising from the study of similarity in music, both human-conducted and computer-aided, and then progresses to a consideration of similarity relationships between patterns in a phrase by Beethoven, from the first movement of the Piano Sonata in A flat major op. 110 (1821), and various potential memetic precursors. This analysis is followed by a consideration of how the kinds of similarity identified in the Beethoven phrase might be understood in psychological/conceptual and then neurobiological terms, the latter by means of William Calvin’s Hexagonal Cloning Theory. This theory offers a mechanism for the operation of David Cope’s concept of the lexicon, conceived here as a museme allele-class. I conclude by attempting to correlate and map the various spaces within which memetic replication occurs

Consumo e digestibilidade aparente de silagens de girassol (Helianthus annuus). I. Matéria seca, proteína bruta e extrato etéreo.
