    Obesity-induced hypoadiponectinaemia: the opposite influences of central and peripheral fat compartments

    Background and Aims:\textbf{Background and Aims:} The substantial reduction in adiponectin concentration among obese individuals seems to depend on fat distribution and is a marker of metabolic and adipose tissue dysfunction. We aimed to: (i) address whether abdominal fat from different compartments (visceral, deep subcutaneous abdominal and superficial subcutaneous abdominal) and gluteofemoral fat are independently associated with blood adiponectin concentration; and (ii) investigate whether abdominal (proxied by waist circumference) and gluteofemoral fat (proxied by hip circumference) accumulation causally determine blood adiponectin concentration. Methods:\textbf{Methods:} To investigate the independent association of abdominal and gluteofemoral fat with adiponectin concentration, we used multivariable regression and data from 30-year-old adults from the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort (nn = 2,743). To assess the causal role of abdominal and gluteofemoral fat accumulation on adiponectin concentration, we used Mendelian randomization and data from two consortia of genome-wide association studies—the GIANT (nn > 210 000) and ADIPOGen consortia (nn = 29 347). Results:\textbf{Results:} In the multivariable regression analysis, all abdominal fat depots were negatively associated with adiponectin concentration, specially visceral abdominal fat [men: β\beta = -0.24 standard unit of log adiponectin per standard unit increase in abdominal fat; 95% confidence interval (CI) = -0.31, -0.18; PP = 8*1013^{-13}; women: β\beta = -0.31; 95% CI = -0.36, -0.25; PP = 7*1027^{-27}), whereas gluteofemoral fat was positively associated with adiponectin concentration (men: β\beta = 0.13 standard unit of log adiponectin per standard unit increase in gluteofemoral fat; 95% CI = 0.03, 0.22; PP = 0.008; women: β\beta = 0.24; 95% CI = 0.17, 0.31; PP = 7*1011^{-11}). In the Mendelian randomization analysis, genetically-predicted waist circumference was inversely related to blood adiponectin concentration (β\beta = -0.27 standard unit of log adiponectin per standard unit increase in waist circumference; 95% CI = -0.36, -0.19; PP = 2*1011^{-11}), whereas genetically-predicted hip circumference was positively associated with blood adiponectin concentration (β\beta = 0.17 standard unit of log adiponectin per standard unit increase in hip circumference; 95% CI = 0.11, 0.24; PP = 1*107^{-7}). Conclusions:\textbf{Conclusions:} These results support the hypotheses that there is a complex interplay between body fat distribution and circulating adiponectin concentration, and that whereas obesity-induced hypoadiponectinaemia seems to be primarily attributed to abdominal fat accumulation, gluteofemoral fat accumulation is likely to exert a protective effect.The study ‘Pelotas Birth Cohort, 1982’ is conducted by Postgraduate Program in Epidemiology at Universidade Federal de Pelotas with the collaboration of the Brazilian Public Health Association (ABRASCO).     Uso da acupressão para minimizar desconfortos na gestação

    Objetivo: Descrever respostas emitidas por gestantes, quanto à melhora dos desconfortos gravídicos após aplicação da técnica da acupressão.Método: Estudo qualitativo e descritivo desenvolvido com 15 gestantes entre novembro de 2013 e fevereiro de 2014 em uma Unidade Básica de Saúde de Natal-RN, Brasil. A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de entrevista não estruturada, e os depoimentos, depois de transcritos e tratados de acordo com a proposta operativa de Minayo, foram lidos criteriosamente, comparados entre si e organizados em dois grupos.Resultados: As categorias suscitadas foram: Repercussões positivas da acupressão e Recomendações do uso da acupressão. Segundo as gestantes, os desconfortos da gravidez como câimbras, cansaço nos membros inferiores, lombalgia e cefaleia diminuíram com o uso da acupressão.Conclusões: Baseado nos resultados obtidos, a acupressão deve ser introduzida pela(o) enfermeira(o) em consultas pré-natais como recurso terapêutico em prol da obtenção do bem-estar da gestante.Palavras-chave: Enfermagem obstétrica.     Comparative study on the use of specific and heterologous microsatellite primers in the stingless bees Melipona rufiventris and M. mondury (Hymenoptera, Apidae)

    Due to their high degree of polymorphism, microsatellites are considered useful tools for studying population genetics. Nevertheless, studies of genetic diversity in stingless bees by means of these primers have revealed a low level of polymorphism, possibly the consequence of the heterologous primers used, since in most cases these were not specifically designed for the species under consideration. Herein we compared the number of polymorphic loci and alleles per locus, as well as observed heterozygosity in Melipona rufiventris and M. mondury populations, using specific and heterologous primers. The use of specific primers placed in evidence the greater frequency of polymorphic loci and alleles per locus, besides an expressive increase in observed heterozygosity in M. rufiventris and M. mondury, thereby reinforcing the idea that populational studies should be undertaken by preferably using species-specific microsatellite primers
