Gamma-ray echoes from SS 433
The detection of two sources of gamma rays towards the microquasar SS 433 has
been recently reported. The first source can be associated with SS 433's
eastern jet lobe, whereas the second source is variable and displays
significant periodicity compatible with the precession period of the binary
system, of about 160 days. The location of this variable component is not
compatible with the location of SS 433 jets. To explain the observed
phenomenology, a scenario based on the illumination of dense gas clouds by
relativistic protons accelerated at the interface of the accretion disk
envelope has been proposed. Energetic arguments strongly constrain this
scenario, however, as it requires an unknown mechanism capable to periodically
channel a large fraction of SS 433's kinetic energy towards an emitter located
36 parsec away from the central binary system.Comment: Accepted for publication in Nature Astronom
Detection of persistent gamma-ray emission toward SS433/W50
The microquasar SS433 features the most energetic jets known in our Galaxy. A
large fraction of the jet kinetic power is delivered to the surrounding W50
nebula at the jet termination shock, from which high-energy emission and
cosmic-ray production have been anticipated. Here we report on the detection of
a persistent gamma-ray signal from the direction of SS433/W50 with the Fermi
Large Area Telescope. The steady flux and a narrow spectral energy distribution
with a maximum around 250 MeV suggest that gamma-rays are rendered by the bulk
jet kinetic power through proton-proton collisions at the SS433/W50 interaction
regions. If the same mechanism is operating in other baryon-loaded microquasar
jets, their collective contribution may represent a significant fraction of the
total galactic cosmic-ray flux at GeV energies.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ
Jet-like structures from PSR J1135-6055
Pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) produced from supersonic runaway pulsars can
render extended X-ray structures in the form of tails and prominent jets. In
this Letter we report on the analysis of 130 ks observations of the PWN
around PSRJ1135-6055 obtained with the Chandra satellite. The system
displays bipolar jet-like structures of uncertain origin, a compact nebula
around the pulsar likely formed by the bow shock ahead of it, and a trailing
tail produced by the pulsar fast proper motion. The spectral and morphological
properties of these structures reveal strong similarities with the PWNe in
other runaway pulsars like PSR J1509-5850 and Geminga. We discuss their
physical origin considering both canonical PWN and jet formation models as well
as alternative scenarios that can also yield extended jet-like features
following the escape of high-energy particles into the ambient magnetic field.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
After a brief note on the current political situation in Russia/Ukraine at the time ofwriting this article, we propose a physics-based analysis of some ideas contained in Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Solaris, adapted from the homonymous novel by Stanisław Lem. We discuss particularly Tarkovsky’s independent, almost orthogonal, perspective on the effects that the search for other types of life in space could entail. The incisive and psychological style that Tarkovsky puts forth in this film suggests limits to the scientific methods related to space research which are perfectly valid today, with Space Science advances growing rapidly inrecent decades. These ideas add a novel perspective to some long-standing philosophical questions, also addressed by physicists like Enrico Fermi, Carl Sagan and Frank Drake: “Arewe alone?”; or perhaps more precisely: “Why should we be alone?”. Keywords: Andrei Tarkovsky, Solaris, extraterrestial life, Drake equation, Fermi paradox. Large-scale emission in FR I jets
The termination structures of the jets of Fanaroff & Riley galaxies are
observed to produce extended non-thermal emission in a wide frequency range.
The study of these structures can provide valuable insights on the conditions
for particle acceleration and radiation at the shock fronts. We have studied the
thermal and non-thermal emission that can be expected from the jet termination
regions of Fanaroff & Riley type I sources. The broadband emission from these
galaxies has been recently extended to include the high-energy gamma-ray
domain, owing to the Fermi detection of Cen A lobes. Exploring the physics
behind the jet/medium interactions in FRI can provide valuable insights on the
conditions for particle acceleration and radiation in the jet termination
shocks. Making use of the results of a fully relativistic numerical simulation
code of the evolution of a FRI jet we model the expected radiative output and
predict spectra and lightcurves of both thermal and non-thermal emission at
different source ages.Comment: Proceedings of the High Energy Phenomena in Relativistic Outflows III

Resolving the Crab pulsar wind nebula at teraelectronvolt energies
The Crab nebula is one of the most-studied cosmic particle accelerators, shining brightly across the entire electromagnetic spectrum up to very-high-energy gamma rays1,2. It is known from observations in the radio to gamma-ray part of the spectrum that the nebula is powered by a pulsar, which converts most of its rotational energy losses into a highly relativistic outflow. This outflow powers a pulsar wind nebula, a region of up to ten light-years across, filled with relativistic electrons and positrons. These particles emit synchrotron photons in the ambient magnetic field and produce very-high-energy gamma rays by Compton up-scattering of ambient low-energy photons. Although the synchrotron morphology of the nebula is well established, it has not been known from which region the very-high-energy gamma rays are emitted3,4,5,6,7,8. Here we report that the Crab nebula has an angular extension at gamma-ray energies of 52 arcseconds (assuming a Gaussian source width), much larger than at X-ray energies. This result closes a gap in the multi-wavelength coverage of the nebula, revealing the emission region of the highest-energy gamma rays. These gamma rays enable us to probe a previously inaccessible electron and positron energy range. We find that simulations of the electromagnetic emission reproduce our measurement, pro
