    Publish, not Perish: Supporting Graduate Students as Aspiring Authors

    BACKGROUND Students pursuing advanced degrees are increasingly expected to contribute to their discipline’s scholarly discourse during their tenure in graduate school. However, they are often unsure of how or where to begin the publishing process, and do not always feel comfortable asking for help from their faculty advisors or fellow students. Scholars, including librarians, have attempted to address these concerns by developing tools and services to meet the needs of future faculty. In recent years, university presses and research libraries have recognized their shared mission in furthering scholarship, with libraries themselves offering publishing education and expertise. PROJECT OVERVIEW During the 2012-2013 academic year, subject librarians and publishing professionals at the University of Michigan Library crafted a program to address students’ questions and concerns about the publishing lifecycle. This ongoing initiative includes a multi-semester workshop series developed in concert with faculty from departments throughout campus, as well as a supplementary online toolkit that takes into account the rapidly evolving nature of scholarly communication. LESSONS LEARNED Major takeaways from this program include: the value of student assessment in shaping publishing workshops; awareness of the discrepancies of registration numbers and actual attendance, highlighting the potential for enhanced promotion techniques; the importance of university press and faculty insight; and the benefits of collaboration among librarians, publishing professionals, and faculty members. NEXT STEPS Future iterations of this program will incorporate in-depth assessment of each program, a more interactive learning environment, and better scheduling and promotion of the workshop series

    Interannual size changes of adult Aurelia sp.5 medusae stage in the Marine Protected Area of Mljet Island South Adriatic

    Aurelia aurita s.l. is the most widespread scyphozoan jellyfish that recurrently appear "en mass" and forms large aggregations mainly in coastal waters, embayments and estuaries. Beside anthropogenic factors controlling jellyfish populations climate change may play an important role. The aim of this study was to assess whether climate-related factors in absence of other anthropogenically induced stressor influence medusae size. We investigated seasonal and interannual changes in the size of Aurelia in a "jelly lake" in the National Park of Mljet Island (Croatia) where minimal human impact on the environment makes the Veliko Jezero a natural mesocosm for understanding the impact of climate change on the Aurelia population. The observed changes suggest Aurelia medusa population response to changing environment, in particular to enhanced temperature, by reduced body sizes. Comparison of Aurelia population dynamics from different regions in the Mediterranean Sea revealed the unique feature of the Veliko Jezero population. Despite the similarity of the environmental windows of medusae occurrences in the Veliko Jezero and regions in the Mediterranean Sea, medusae in the Veliko Jezero are present all year round. It seems that the lake bathymetry enables medusae to vertically migrate to deeper and cooler water layer, avoiding the limiting temperatures developed in the upper layer during the summer. These conditions may prolong the Aurelia medusae life span and together with continuous strobilation support the stability of the Aurelia medusae population all year round

    International audienceAccelerated life tests on microelectronic devices are needed to estimate their degradation under severe environment. THB (Temperature Humidity Bias) [1] at 85°C and 85%RH (relative humidity) is commonly used for reliability studies. Empirical acceleration laws, used for THB test take into account the temperature change (from 22°C to 85°C), but they do not quantify its impact of the corresponding thermo-elastic stress which it adds to the residual stress in the die and of possible microstructure changes. The aim of this work is to determine the thermo-mechanical stresses induced in the active layer of a Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) chip by the THB test. They are due to the mismatch in Coefficients of Thermal Expansion (CTE) between the stack of thin film materials used as metallurgic interconnection and the intermediate dielectric layers above the active area of the chip. To estimate this stress, fist layers thicknesses measurement have been made with various techniques; second few configurations have been used to simulate heating and finally " complete " 2D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has been performed. Elastic and thermo-physical materials data come from the literature. The results indicate compression of metal gate (Ti/Al/Au) and tensile stress concentration in the SiNx passivation layer. The outcomes is compared with THB test results from [2] and suggests that stress induced by heating must be considered to explain failure during THB test

    Differential binding regulation of microtubule-associated proteins MAP1A, MAP1B, and MAP2 by tubulin polyglutamylation.

    The major neuronal post-translational modification of tubulin, polyglutamylation, can act as a molecular potentiometer to modulate microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) binding as a function of the polyglutamyl chain length. The relative affinity of Tau, MAP2, and kinesin has been shown to be optimal for tubulin modified by approximately 3 glutamyl units. Using blot overlay assays, we have tested the ability of polyglutamylation to modulate the interaction of two other structural MAPs, MAP1A and MAP1B, with tubulin. MAP1A and MAP2 display distinct behavior in terms of tubulin binding; they do not compete with each other, even when the polyglutamyl chains of tubulin are removed, indicating that they have distinct binding sites on tubulin. Binding of MAP1A and MAP1B to tubulin is also controlled by polyglutamylation and, although the modulation of MAP1B binding resembles that of MAP2, we found that polyglutamylation can exert a different mode of regulation toward MAP1A. Interestingly, although the affinity of the other MAPs tested so far decreases sharply for tubulins carrying long polyglutamyl chains, the affinity of MAP1A for these tubulins is maintained at a significant level. This differential regulation exerted by polyglutamylation toward different MAPs might facilitate their selective recruitment into distinct microtubule populations, hence modulating their functional properties

Stvaraju velike agregacije većinom u obalnim vodama, zaljevima i estuarijima. Osim antropogenog, važan utjecaj na populaciju meduza mogu imati i klimatske promjene. Cilj ovog istraživanja je procjeniti u kolikoj mjeri utjecaji povezani s klimatskim promjenama, u odsutnosti drugih antropogeno induciranih stresova, utječu na veličinu meduza. Istraživali smo sezonske i godišnje promjene veličine vrste Aurelia u morskim jezerima Nacionalnog parka Mljet (hrvatska), gdje se Veliko jezero pokazalo kao idealan prirodni mezokosmos za istraživanje i razumijevanje utjecaja klimatskih promjena na populaciju ove vrste. Uočene promjene ukazuju da populacija meduze Aurelia odgovara na promjene okoliša, posebno na povišenu temperaturu smanjujući veličinu tijela. Usporedba dinamike populacije Aurelia u različitim dijelovima Sredozemlja otkriva jedinstvenu značajku populacije u Velikom jezeru. Unatoč sličnosti uvjeta okoliša u kojima se meduze pojavljuju u Velikom jezeru i ostalim područjima Sredozemlja, u Velikom jezeru su prisutne tijekom cijele godine. Očigledno, batimetrija jezera omogućava meduzama avertikalnu migraciju u dublje i hladnije slojeve, izbjegavajući površinski sloj sa povišenim vrijednostima temperature koje se razvijaju tijekom ljeta. Ovi uvjeti mogu utjecati na produžen životni vijek meduza te omogućiti stalnu strobilaciju i stabilnost populacije ove vrste tijekom cijele godine
