A tow concept for the space shuttle orbiter approach and landing test
The tow concept provides the means for evaluating the orbiter aerodynamic performance and handling qualities in the same configuration as expected in actual space shuttle flight operation. A Boeing 747-100 aircraft has engine-out capability to tow the orbiter to an altitude that permits a safe orbiter approach and landing. The tow concept also provides a means for conducting a comprehensive ground test program before proceeding into the actual ALT flight operations. The implementation of the tow concept requires only a minor structural modification in the nose section of the orbiter vehicle; requires minor modifications in the 747 cargo bay; and makes use of those orbiter onboard systems installed in the ALT orbiter vehicle. The 747 wake turbulence does not constitute a problem for the orbiter during take-off or climb to altitude. The impact that the tow concept would have on the cost and schedule of the space shuttle program was not evaluated in this study
Total Chiral Symmetry Breaking during Crystallization: Who needs a "Mother Crystal"?
Processes that can produce states of broken chiral symmetry are of particular
interest to physics, chemistry and biology. Chiral symmetry breaking during
crystallization of sodium chlorate occurs via the production of secondary
crystals of the same handedness from a single "mother crystal" that seeds the
solution. Here we report that a large and "symmetric" population of D- and
L-crystals moves into complete chiral purity disappearing one of the
enantiomers. This result shows: (i) a new symmetry breaking process
incompatible with the hypothesis of a single "mother crystal"; (ii) that
complete symmetry breaking and chiral purity can be achieved from an initial
system with both enantiomers. These findings demand a new explanation to the
process of total symmetry breaking in crystallization without the intervention
of a "mother crystal" and open the debate on this fascinating phenomenon. We
present arguments to show that our experimental data can been explained with a
new model of "complete chiral purity induced by nonlinear autocatalysis and

Aircraft energy efficiency laminar flow control wing design study
An engineering design study was performed in which laminar flow control (LFC) was integrated into the wing of a commercial passenger transport aircraft. A baseline aircraft configuration was selected and the wing geometry was defined. The LFC system, with suction slots, ducting, and suction pumps was integrated with the wing structure. The use of standard aluminum technology and advanced superplastic formed diffusion bonded titanium technology was evaluated. The results of the design study show that the LFC system can be integrated with the wing structure to provide a structurally and aerodynamically efficient wing for a commercial transport aircraft
Spin Gap of S=1/2 Heisenberg Model on Distorted Diamond Chain
We study the spin gap of the S=1/2 Heisenberg model on the distorted diamond
chain, which is recently proposed to represent magnetic properties of Cu_3 Cl_6
(H_2 O)_2 2H_8 C_4 SO_2. This model is composed of stacked trimers and has
three kinds of exchange interactions J_1, J_2 and J_3. Using the numerical
diagonalization, we obtain a contour map of the spin gap in the J_2/J_1-J_3/J_1
plane. We argue possible values of the exchange constants based on the contour
map and the observed value of the spin gap.Comment: 2 pages, 4 figure
Proportion Regulation in Globally Coupled Nonlinear Systems
As a model of proportion regulation in differentiation process of biological
system, globally coupled activator-inhibitor systems are studied. Formation and
destabilization of one and two cluster state are predicted analytically.
Numerical simulations show that the proportion of units of clusters is chosen

Semantics of the visual environment encoded in parahippocampal cortex
Semantic representations capture the statistics of experience and store this information in memory. A fundamental component of this memory system is knowledge of the visual environment, including knowledge of objects and their associations. Visual semantic information underlies a range of behaviors, from perceptual categorization to cognitive processes such as language and reasoning. Here we examine the neuroanatomic system that encodes visual semantics. Across three experiments, we found converging evidence indicating that knowledge of verbally mediated visual concepts relies on information encoded in a region of the ventral-medial temporal lobe centered on parahippocampal cortex. In an fMRI study, this region was strongly engaged by the processing of concepts relying on visual knowledge but not by concepts relying on other sensory modalities. In a study of patients with the semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (semantic dementia), atrophy that encompassed this region was associated with a specific impairment in verbally mediated visual semantic knowledge. Finally, in a structural study of healthy adults from the fMRI experiment, gray matter density in this region related to individual variability in the processing of visual concepts. The anatomic location of these findings aligns with recent work linking the ventral-medial temporal lobe with high-level visual representation, contextual associations, and reasoning through imagination. Together this work suggests a critical role for parahippocampal cortex in linking the visual environment with knowledge systems in the human brain

Lifestyle television provides a key site through which to explore the dilemmas of ethical consumption, as the genre shifts to consider the ethics of different consumption practices and taste cultures. UK television cook Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's TV programmes offer fertile ground not only for thinking about television personalities as lifestyle experts and moral entrepreneurs, but also for thinking about how the meanings and uses of their television image are inflected by genre. In this article we explore how the shift from the lifestyled downshifting narrative of the River Cottage series to the 'campaigning culinary documentary' Hugh's Chicken Run exposes issues of celebrity, class and ethics. While both series are concerned with ethical consumption, they work in different ways to reveal a distinction between 'ethical' and 'unethical' consumption practices and positions - positions that are inevitably classed
The susceptibility and excitation spectrum of (VO)PO in ladder and dimer chain models
We present numerical results for the magnetic susceptibility of a Heisenberg
antiferromagnetic spin ladder, as a function of temperature and the spin-spin
interaction strengths and . These are contrasted with new
bulk limit results for the dimer chain. A fit to the experimental
susceptibility of the candidate spin-ladder compound vanadyl pyrophosphate,
(VO)PO, gives the parameters meV and meV. With these values we predict a singlet-triplet energy gap of
meV, and give a numerical estimate of the ladder triplet
dispersion relation . In contrast, a fit to the dimer chain model

Quantum numbers for relative ground states of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin rings
We suggest a general rule for the shift quantum numbers k of the relative
ground states of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin rings. This rule generalizes
well-known results of Marshall, Peierls, Lieb, Schultz, and Mattis for even
rings. Our rule is confirmed by numerical investigations and rigorous proofs
for special cases, including systems with a Haldane gap. Implications for the
total spin quantum number S of relative ground states are discussed as well as
