    3D Reconstruction with Low Resolution, Small Baseline and High Radial Distortion Stereo Images

    In this paper we analyze and compare approaches for 3D reconstruction from low-resolution (250x250), high radial distortion stereo images, which are acquired with small baseline (approximately 1mm). These images are acquired with the system NanEye Stereo manufactured by CMOSIS/AWAIBA. These stereo cameras have also small apertures, which means that high levels of illumination are required. The goal was to develop an approach yielding accurate reconstructions, with a low computational cost, i.e., avoiding non-linear numerical optimization algorithms. In particular we focused on the analysis and comparison of radial distortion models. To perform the analysis and comparison, we defined a baseline method based on available software and methods, such as the Bouguet toolbox [2] or the Computer Vision Toolbox from Matlab. The approaches tested were based on the use of the polynomial model of radial distortion, and on the application of the division model. The issue of the center of distortion was also addressed within the framework of the application of the division model. We concluded that the division model with a single radial distortion parameter has limitations

    Este estudo teve como objetivo descobrir, através da avaliação e da análise das áreas psicomotora, cognitiva e linguística, se as crianças do 1º ano do Ensino Fundamental I (EFI) precisam desenvolver habilidades para aquisição da leitura e da escrita. 62 crianças do 1º ano do EFI da rede pública da cidade de Limeira efetuaram um Protocolo de Avaliação sobre as habilidades psicomotoras/cognitivas e linguísticas. Observou-se que as habilidades estudadas interferiram na qualidade do processo de alfabetização e não diretamente no aprender ou não a ler e escrever. Assim, corrobora-se a importância de incorporação de atividades voltadas para estas habilidades durante a Educação Infantil e no início do Ensino Fundamental I

    Inflammatory bowel diseases and human reproduction: A comprehensive evidence-based review

    To evaluate the effects of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) on human reproduction, we reviewed the current literature using a systematic search for published studies (articles and/or abstracts) without limits for English language. We searched on Medline (through PubMed), the Institute for Scientific Information, the Web of Science and the websites for the registration of controlled trials (http://controlled-trials.com/). Bibliographies of retrieved articles, books, expert opinion review articles and reviewed bibliographies from subject experts were manually searched. Titles and abstracts were screened initially, and potential relevant articles were identified and reviewed. Whenever possible, data were analyzed by comparing IBD patients vs healthy controls, and patients with active IBDs vs those with disease in remission. The effects of IBDs on female fertility, fertility in infertile couples, pregnancy and male infertility were examined separately. Patients with IBDs in remission have normal fertility. At the moment, there is no established guideline for the preservation of fertility in women with IBD undergoing surgery. Further data are needed regarding guidelines for the management of these patients. Data regarding IBDs and infertility are currently completely lacking. Considering the prevalence of intestinal pathology in young adults of childbearing age, this field is of great scientific and clinical interest, opening up important future perspectives. Another important and as yet unexplored point is the response to treatments for infertility in patients with IBDs. In particular, the question is whether the reproductive outcomes (clinical and biological) can be influenced by the IBD of one of the partners. The goals for successful reproductive outcomes in IBD population are correct counseling and disease remission. IBDs significantly affect several reproductive aspects of human (female, male, couple) reproduction. Further data are needed to develop guidelines for the clinical management of subjects of reproductive age with IBDs. © 2014 Baishideng Publishing Group Inc. All rights reserved

    Abstract We generated PSMi001-A and PSMi008-A hiPSC lines from two individuals belonging to a South African (SA) founder population in which the malignant KCNQ1-A341V mutation cosegregates with the Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) phenotype. PSMi001-A was derived from an asymptomatic KCNQ1-A341V mutation carrier, whereas PSMi008-A was derived from a healthy non-mutation carrier, heterozygous for the minor variant rs16847548 on the NOS1AP gene, associated with QT prolongation in the general population, and with a greater risk for cardiac arrest in the affected members of the SA founder population.     Surveillance of surgical site infections in orthopedic prosthetic surgery: a tool for identifying risk factors and improving clinical practice

    Introduction Surgical site infections (SSIs) are one of the most frequently encountered complications associated with increased length of hospital stay, costs, and hospital mortality. There is no national system for the comprehensive monitoring of the incidence of SSIs. Methods All patients undergoing orthopedic prosthetic surgery from April 1 to June 30, 2023, were enrolled. Clinical evaluation of the surgical site was conducted at 30 days, and a telephone follow-up at 90 days was performed using a specially designed questionnaire. Results A total of 59 patients were included. Surgery was performed on the knee in 71.19% and on the hip in 28.81%. The mean BMI observed was 28.25±2.97, and the mean ASA score was 2.67±0.58. Among comorbidities, 6 patients had diabetes mellitus. The incidence of SSIs was 5,08%, two infections occurred in knee prosthesis surgery and one in hip surgery. The data were analysed and diabetes was found as the main risk factor for the development of infection. Conclusions Although based on a small number of patients, the results are encouraging, especially considering that the patients had an average ASA score of more than 2 and a high BMI. However, to further reduce the risk of infection, improved hygiene measures have been implemented in the operating room and antibiotic prophylaxis protocol has been updated to take into account the potential for MRSA colonization
