    NASTRAN computer resource management for the matrix decomposition modules

    Detailed computer resource measurements of the NASTRAN matrix decomposition spill logic were made using a software input/output monitor. These measurements showed that, in general, job cost can be reduced by avoiding spill. The results indicated that job cost can be minimized by using dynamic memory management. A prototype memory management system is being implemented and evaluated for the CDC Cyber computer

    Color Octet Contribution in Exclusive P-Wave Charmonium Decay

    Recent advances in our understanding of the higher-wave quarkonia have generated much interests in quarkonium physics. However most are devoted to inclusive decays and productions. Experimental data of several two-body exclusive decay channels of P-wave charmonia such as \pi \pi and p \bar p are available and some have recently been re-measured by the BES collaboration. It is not clear from the outset that color octet is needed for these exclusive channels. Indeed only color singlet has been used in the past and reasonable agreement with data was found. Contrary to these old results, we provide theoretical arguments for the inclusion of color octet and perform explicit calculations to back this up.Comment: 6 pages using espcrc2.sty, contribution to the 4th Int.     An algorithm for selecting a radiation transport subgrid for ablation and radiation coupled hypersonic viscous shock-layer problems

    An algorithm is described for selecting a grid subset for calculating radiative transport. The subset spacing is determined by using the variation in aerothermal properties across the full grid of the shock layer. Results show that a radiation grid subset of 15 to 20 points can be used for viscous-shock layer calculations where approximately 50 grid points are required to define the aerothermal profiles. Results are presented for various planetary entry conditions with and without mass injection to demonstrate both the validity and utility of the algorithm

    pi-/pi+ ratio in heavy ions collisions: Coulomb effect or chemical equilibration?

    We calculate the pi-/pi+ ratio for Pb+Pb at CERN/SPS energies and for Au+Au at BNL/AGS energies using a (3+1) dimensional hydrodynamical model. Without consideration of Coulomb effect an enhancement of this ratio at low mt is found compatible with that observed in these experiments. Our calculations are based on previous (3+1) dimensional hydrodynamical simulations (HYLANDER), which described many other aspects of experimental data. In this model the observed enhancement is a consequence of baryon and strangeness conservation and of chemical equilibration of the system and is caused by the decay of produced hyperons, which leads to a difference in the total number of positive and negative pions as well. Based on the same approach, we also present results for the pi-/pi+ ratio for S+S (CERN/SPS) collisions, where we find a similar effect. The absence of the enhancement of the pi-/pi+ ratio in the S+S data presented by the NA44 Collaboration, if confirmed, could indicate that chemical equilibration has not yet been estabilished in this reaction.Comment: 8 pages and 2 figures, submmited to Phys.     Making an Embedded DBMS JIT-friendly

    While database management systems (DBMSs) are highly optimized, interactions across the boundary between the programming language (PL) and the DBMS are costly, even for in-process embedded DBMSs. In this paper, we show that programs that interact with the popular embedded DBMS SQLite can be significantly optimized - by a factor of 3.4 in our benchmarks - by inlining across the PL / DBMS boundary. We achieved this speed-up by replacing parts of SQLite's C interpreter with RPython code and composing the resulting meta-tracing virtual machine (VM) - called SQPyte - with the PyPy VM. SQPyte does not compromise stand-alone SQL performance and is 2.2% faster than SQLite on the widely used TPC-H benchmark suite.Comment: 24 pages, 18 figure

    Approaches to Interpreter Composition

    In this paper, we compose six different Python and Prolog VMs into 4 pairwise compositions: one using C interpreters; one running on the JVM; one using meta-tracing interpreters; and one using a C interpreter and a meta-tracing interpreter. We show that programs that cross the language barrier frequently execute faster in a meta-tracing composition, and that meta-tracing imposes a significantly lower overhead on composed programs relative to mono-language programs.Comment: 33 pages, 1 figure, 9 table

    Hydrodynamical analysis of single inclusive spectra and Bose-Einstein correlations for Pb+PbPb+Pb at 160 AGeV

    We present the first analysis of preliminary data for Pb+PbPb+Pb at 160 AGeVAGeV using 3+1-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamics. We find excellent agreement with the rapidity spectra of negative hadrons and the correlation measurements. The data indicates a large amount of stopping; 65%65\% of the invariant energy of the collision is thermalized and 73%73\% of the baryons are contained in the central fireball.     Dynamics of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Ag85B Revealed by a Sensitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay.

    Secretion of specific proteins contributes to pathogenesis and immune responses in tuberculosis and other bacterial infections, yet the kinetics of protein secretion and fate of secreted proteins in vivo are poorly understood. We generated new monoclonal antibodies that recognize the Mycobacterium tuberculosis secreted protein Ag85B and used them to establish and characterize a sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to quantitate Ag85B in samples generated in vitro and in vivo We found that nutritional or culture conditions had little impact on the secretion of Ag85B and that there is considerable variation in Ag85B secretion by distinct strains in the M. tuberculosis complex: compared with the commonly used H37Rv strain (lineage 4), Mycobacterium africanum (lineage 6) secretes less Ag85B, and two strains from lineage 2 secrete more Ag85B. We also used the ELISA to determine that the rate of secretion of Ag85B is 10- to 100-fold lower than that of proteins secreted by Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, respectively. ELISA quantitation of Ag85B in lung homogenates of M. tuberculosis H37Rv-infected mice revealed that although Ag85B accumulates in the lungs as the bacterial population expands, the amount of Ag85B per bacterium decreases nearly 10,000-fold at later stages of infection, coincident with the development of T cell responses and arrest of bacterial population growth. These results indicate that bacterial protein secretion in vivo is dynamic and regulated, and quantitation of secreted bacterial proteins can contribute to the understanding of pathogenesis and immunity in tuberculosis and other infections.IMPORTANCE Bacterial protein secretion contributes to host-pathogen interactions, yet the process and consequences of bacterial protein secretion during infection are poorly understood. We developed a sensitive ELISA to quantitate a protein (termed Ag85B) secreted by M. tuberculosis and used it to find that Ag85B secretion occurs with slower kinetics than for proteins secreted by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and that accumulation of Ag85B in the lungs is markedly regulated as a function of the bacterial population density. Our results demonstrate that quantitation of bacterial proteins during infection can reveal novel insights into host-pathogen interactions
