Minimal invasive surgery for coronoid fracture: technical note
Operative treatment of coronoid fracture often requires a large dissection of soft tissue, resulting in elbow stiffness and functional limitation. The authors present a minimal invasive, safe technique, useful in the case of isolated coronoid fracture associated with elbow dislocation. This technique does not require soft tissue dissection and allows an early unlimited resumption of sports activitie

Control of Visually Guided Behavior by Distinct Populations of Spinal Projection Neurons
A basic question in the field of motor control is how different actions are represented by activity in spinal projection neurons. We used a new behavioral assay to identify visual stimuli that specifically drive basic motor patterns in zebrafish. These stimuli evoked consistent patterns of neural activity in the neurons projecting to the spinal cord, which we could map throughout the entire population using in vivo two-photon calcium imaging. We found that stimuli that drive distinct behaviors activated distinct subsets of projection neurons, consisting, in some cases, of just a few cells. This stands in contrast to the distributed activation seen for more complex behaviors. Furthermore, targeted cell by cell ablations of the neurons associated with evoked turns abolished the corresponding behavioral response. This description of the functional organization of the zebrafish motor system provides a framework for identifying the complete circuit underlying a vertebrate behavior.Molecular and Cellular Biolog
NeXtQSM -- A complete deep learning pipeline for data-consistent quantitative susceptibility mapping trained with hybrid data
Deep learning based Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) has shown great
potential in recent years, obtaining similar results to established
non-learning approaches. Many current deep learning approaches are not data
consistent, require in vivo training data or solve the QSM problem in
consecutive steps resulting in the propagation of errors. Here we aim to
overcome these limitations and developed a framework to solve the QSM
processing steps jointly. We developed a new hybrid training data generation
method that enables the end-to-end training for solving background field
correction and dipole inversion in a data-consistent fashion using a
variational network that combines the QSM model term and a learned regularizer.
We demonstrate that NeXtQSM overcomes the limitations of previous deep learning
methods. NeXtQSM offers a new deep learning based pipeline for computing
quantitative susceptibility maps that integrates each processing step into the
training and provides results that are robust and fast
A genetically encoded reporter of synaptic activity in vivo
To image synaptic activity within neural circuits, we tethered the genetically encoded calcium indicator (GECI) GCaMP2 to synaptic vesicles by fusion to synaptophysin. The resulting reporter, SyGCaMP2, detected the electrical activity of neurons with two advantages over existing cytoplasmic GECIs: it identified the locations of synapses and had a linear response over a wider range of spike frequencies. Simulations and experimental measurements indicated that linearity arises because SyGCaMP2 samples the brief calcium transient passing through the presynaptic compartment close to voltage-sensitive calcium channels rather than changes in bulk calcium concentration. In vivo imaging in zebrafish demonstrated that SyGCaMP2 can assess electrical activity in conventional synapses of spiking neurons in the optic tectum and graded voltage signals transmitted by ribbon synapses of retinal bipolar cells. Localizing a GECI to synaptic terminals provides a strategy for monitoring activity across large groups of neurons at the level of individual synapses
Development of an international standard set of outcome measures for patients with atrial fibrillation: a report of the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) atrial fibrillation working group.
AIMS: As health systems around the world increasingly look to measure and improve the value of care that they provide to patients, being able to measure the outcomes that matter most to patients is vital. To support the shift towards value-based health care in atrial fibrillation (AF), the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) assembled an international Working Group (WG) of 30 volunteers, including health professionals and patient representatives to develop a standardized minimum set of outcomes for benchmarking care delivery in clinical settings. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using an online-modified Delphi process, outcomes important to patients and health professionals were selected and categorized into (i) long-term consequences of disease outcomes, (ii) complications of treatment outcomes, and (iii) patient-reported outcomes. The WG identified demographic and clinical variables for use as case-mix risk adjusters. These included baseline demographics, comorbidities, cognitive function, date of diagnosis, disease duration, medications prescribed and AF procedures, as well as smoking, body mass index (BMI), alcohol intake, and physical activity. Where appropriate, and for ease of implementation, standardization of outcomes and case-mix variables was achieved using ICD codes. The standard set underwent an open review process in which over 80% of patients surveyed agreed with the outcomes captured by the standard set. CONCLUSION: Implementation of these consensus recommendations could help institutions to monitor, compare and improve the quality and delivery of chronic AF care. Their consistent definition and collection, using ICD codes where applicable, could also broaden the implementation of more patient-centric clinical outcomes research in AF
The quest for companions to post-common envelope binaries. II. NSVS14256825 and HS0705+6700
We report new mid-eclipse times of the two close binaries NSVS14256825 and
HS0705+6700, harboring an sdB primary and a low-mass main-sequence secondary.
Both objects display clear variations in the measured orbital period, which can
be explained by the action of a third object orbiting the binary. If this
interpretation is correct, the third object in NSVS14256825 is a giant planet
with a mass of roughly 12 M_Jup. For HS0705+6700, we provide evidence that
strengthens the case for the suggested periodic nature of the eclipse time
variation and reduces the uncertainties in the parameters of the brown dwarf
implied by that model. The derived period is 8.4 yr and the mass is 31 M_Jup,
if the orbit is coplanar with the binary. This research is part of the

astronomers and student groups at high schools.Comment: Accepted by Astron. and Astrophy
A Mathematical model for Astrocytes mediated LTP at Single Hippocampal Synapses
Many contemporary studies have shown that astrocytes play a significant role
in modulating both short and long form of synaptic plasticity. There are very
few experimental models which elucidate the role of astrocyte over Long-term
Potentiation (LTP). Recently, Perea & Araque (2007) demonstrated a role of
astrocytes in induction of LTP at single hippocampal synapses. They suggested a
purely pre-synaptic basis for induction of this N-methyl-D- Aspartate (NMDA)
Receptor-independent LTP. Also, the mechanisms underlying this pre-synaptic
induction were not investigated. Here, in this article, we propose a
mathematical model for astrocyte modulated LTP which successfully emulates the
experimental findings of Perea & Araque (2007). Our study suggests the role of
retrograde messengers, possibly Nitric Oxide (NO), for this pre-synaptically
modulated LTP.Comment: 51 pages, 15 figures, Journal of Computational Neuroscience (to

Wernicke-Kleist-Leonhard phenotypes of endogenous psychoses: a review of their validity .
While the ICD-DSM paradigm has been a major advance in clinical psychiatry, its usefulness for biological psychiatry is debated. By defining consensus-based disorders rather than empirically driven phenotypes, consensus classifications were not an implementation of the biomedical paradigm. In the field of endogenous psychoses, the Wernicke-Kleist-Leonhard (WKL) pathway has optimized the descriptions of 35 major phenotypes using common medical heuristics on lifelong diachronic observations. Regarding their construct validity, WKL phenotypes have good reliability and predictive and face validity. WKL phenotypes come with remarkable evidence for differential validity on age of onset, familiality, pregnancy complications, precipitating factors, and treatment response. Most impressive is the replicated separation of high- and low-familiality phenotypes. Created in the purest tradition of the biomedical paradigm, the WKL phenotypes deserve to be contrasted as credible alternatives with other approaches currently under discussion.
First results of the air shower experiment KASCADE
The main goals of the KASCADE (KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array DEtector)
experiment are the determination of the energy spectrum and elemental
composition of the charged cosmic rays in the energy range around the knee at
ca. 5 PeV. Due to the large number of measured observables per single shower a
variety of different approaches are applied to the data, preferably on an
event-by-event basis. First results are presented and the influence of the
high-energy interaction models underlying the analyses is discussed.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures included, to appear in the TAUP 99 Proceedings,

Electron, Muon, and Hadron Lateral Distributions Measured in Air-Showers by the KASCADE Experiment
Measurements of electron, muon, and hadron lateral distributions of extensive
air showers as recorded by the KASCADE experiment are presented. The data cover
the energy range from about 5x10^14 eV up to almost 10^17 eV and extend from
the inner core region to distances of 200 m. The electron and muon
distributions are corrected for mutual contaminations by taking into account
the detector properties in the experiment. All distributions are well described
by NKG-functions. The scale radii describing the electron and hadron data best
are approx. 30 m and 10 m, respectively. We discuss the correlation between
scale radii and `age' parameter as well as their dependence on shower size,
zenith angle, and particle energy threshold.Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in Astroparticle
