    Conservation Initiatives/Practices at Universities

    Growing actions on putting into practice the policy for improving sustainable development gives universities great variety of opportunities on implementation of different ‘green’ technologies in their campuses. Campus greening is the first step towards sustainability. The purpose of this article is to present existing approaches on the categories of sustainable campus initiatives, their significance for complete region development and the state of the environment. On the example of the inner garden of Volgograd State University, the authors describe the importance of greening the external campus sites for minimization of the negative environmental and health affects for students and faculty staff. The green initiative reflects the institution’s function as center of technological and social regional development. The green garden can reduce stress and also provide an esthetic sense by involving attractive surroundings. The impact of climatic zone on emerging of appropriate management and maintenance systems, meaningful comparison with the past landscape solutions are also reviewed in the present article. By implementing green technologies, the university shows its prudence and readiness to behave responsibly, sensibly and maturely in response to sustainability issues of the present and the future

    Modulated Electro-Hyperthermia Accelerates Tumor Delivery and Improves Anticancer Activity of Doxorubicin Encapsulated in Lyso-Thermosensitive Liposomes in 4T1-Tumor-Bearing Mice

    Modulated electro-hyperthermia (mEHT) is an adjuvant cancer therapy that enables tumor-selective heating (+2.5 °C). In this study, we investigated whether mEHT accelerates the tumor-specific delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) from lyso-thermosensitive liposomal doxorubicin (LTLD) and improves its anticancer efficacy in mice bearing a triple-negative breast cancer cell line (4T1). The 4T1 cells were orthotopically injected into Balb/C mice, and mEHT was performed on days 9, 12, and 15 after the implantation. DOX, LTLD, or PEGylated liposomal DOX (PLD) were administered for comparison. The tumor size and DOX accumulation in the tumor were measured. The cleaved caspase-3 (cC3) and cell proliferation were evaluated by cC3 or Ki67 immunohistochemistry and Western blot. The LTLD+mEHT combination was more effective at inhibiting tumor growth than the free DOX and PLD, demonstrated by reductions in both the tumor volume and tumor weight. LTLD+mEHT resulted in the highest DOX accumulation in the tumor one hour after treatment. Tumor cell damage was associated with cC3 in the damaged area, and with a reduction in Ki67 in the living area. These changes were significantly the strongest in the LTLD+mEHT-treated tumors. The body weight loss was similar in all mice treated with any DOX formulation, suggesting no difference in toxicity. In conclusion, LTLD combined with mEHT represents a novel approach for DOX delivery into cancer tissue

    Wild plants have always held economic, nutritional and medicinal value for human beings. Present work is the study of local information of some wild plants being used for remedial purposes in District Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan. The indigenous knowledge of local conventional uses was collected through survey and personal interviews during field trips. A total of 50 plant species were identified by taxonomic description using field guides and locally by medicinal knowledge of people living in the area. About 150 informers were interviewed randomly to record local names and ethno-medicinal uses of different plant species

    Exploring the Portrayal of Female Voice in ‘Heer Ranjha’: A Gender-Based Study

    The present study aims at explicating the theme of love in the folk tale Heer Ranjha through the discourse stylistics perspective. To do this, Fairclough (2015) model is employed with a focus on lexical choices. The metaphors used in the dialogues portraying the theme of love have been carefully selected, and further the linguistic pattern employed has been significantly discussed to highlight the embedded theme of love as a dominant human emotion in folk tales. The study also aims at providing a richer, more complex and enlightened canvas of feminist theory highlighting the role of women and power relations between the two sexes. The data comprises on twenty passages from the translation of ‘Heer Ranjha’ by Usborne (1973) where the translator claims to have translated the epilogue at full length while the rest of the poem has been condensed without omitting anything significantly important to the theme. The study throws light on the language of the folk tale, which reflects socio-cultural features such as the patriarchic family structure of the time through the language choices. The flute, a bamboo musical instrument, is a metaphor of love in a dream-like romantic sound. Finally, this paper helps to develop a better understanding of folktales in a particular socio-cultural background

    Protective Effect of Vitamin E on Indomethacin Induced Gastric Ulcers

    Background: To study the histomorphological changes in gastric mucosa induced in mice by Indomethacin and to assess the protective effect of vitamin E with variable duration of drugs.Methods: In this experimental study 48 adult albino mice were divided randomly in to four groups A, B, C and D each group comprising of 12 mice. Group A was the control group. Group B was given Vitamin E 400mg/kg. Group C was given Indomethacin 25mg/kg and Group D was given a combination of Indomethacin and Vitamin E (25mg/kg & 400 mg/kg respectively). In each group 6 animals were given dose for 3 days and other 6 animals for 8 days. They were sacrificed 24 hours after the last dose. After dissection gastric mucosal changes regarding colour and site of ulcers were examined under dissecting microscope. Histological parameter observed was presence/absence of mucus in the cells of gastric glands.Results: Findings were normal in groups A and B. Reddish mucosa with ulcers in pyloric part of stomach was seen in groups C and D. Decreased mucus in cells of gastric glands was also observed in group C as compared to group D.Conclusion: Severity of gastric ulcers induced by Indomethacin in mice is decreased by giving Vitamin E which protects gastric mucosa by increasing mucus in cells of gastric glands

    The research work presented was initiated during 2013 to get information and report common weeds found in cereal crops (Maize, Rice and Wheat) and sugarcane fields of District Bannu. The relative density of weeds was determined by using the Oosting scale method. As a whole about 135 weeds plant belonging to 37 families were collected, identified botanically, documented and preserved. The most common families in terms of abundance and number of species infesting above mention crops were Asteraceae (54%, 20 species), Poaceae (51%, 19 species), Amaranthaceae, Boraginaceae and Solanaceae (21%, 8 species). Papilionaceae, Brassicaceae and Euphorbiaceae (18.9%, 7 species). Malvaceae and Polygonaceae (13.5%, 5 species), Chenopodiaceae (10.8%, 4 species), Plantaginaceae (8%, 3 species). Verbenaceae, Genetaceae, Convolvulacea, Cucurbitaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Apiaceae, and Asclepiadaceae (5.4%, 2 species). The rest of the families were represented by 2.7% with only one species each.     Implication of the Gut Microbiome and Microbial-Derived Metabolites in Immune-Related Adverse Events: Emergence of Novel Biomarkers for Cancer Immunotherapy

    Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have changed how we think about tumor management. Combinations of anti-programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) immunotherapy have become the standard of care in many advanced-stage cancers, including as a first-line therapy. Aside from improved anti-tumor immunity, the mechanism of action of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) exposes a new toxicity profile known as immune-related adverse effects (irAEs). This novel toxicity can damage any organ, but the skin, digestive and endocrine systems are the most frequently afflicted. Most ICI-attributed toxicity symptoms are mild, but some are severe and necessitate multidisciplinary side effect management. Obtaining knowledge on the various forms of immune-related toxicities and swiftly changing treatment techniques to lower the probability of experiencing severe irAEs has become a priority in oncological care. In recent years, there has been a growing understanding of an intriguing link between the gut microbiome and ICI outcomes. Multiple studies have demonstrated a connection between microbial metagenomic and metatranscriptomic patterns and ICI efficacy in malignant melanoma, lung and colorectal cancer. The immunomodulatory effect of the gut microbiome can have a real effect on the biological background of irAEs as well. Furthermore, specific microbial signatures and metabolites might be associated with the onset and severity of toxicity symptoms. By identifying these biological factors, novel biomarkers can be used in clinical practice to predict and manage potential irAEs. This comprehensive review aims to summarize the clinical aspects and biological background of ICI-related irAEs and their potential association with the gut microbiome and metabolome. We aim to explore the current state of knowledge on the most important and reliable irAE-related biomarkers of microbial origin and discuss the intriguing connection between ICI efficacy and toxicity
