The aesthetics of frivolity : reinvesting in balloons, cake icing, ribbons and trinkets
This thesis investigates the phenomenon of frivolity in contemporary art practice and thus elaborates a concept of the frivolous, not only as a new aesthetic category, but as a theoretical instrument as well. The thesis explores the works of artists Shelley Miller, Jo-Anne Balcaen, Portia Munson and Jeff Koons. The two main objects of concern in this thesis are, firstly, frivolity itself, and secondly, its expression through everyday trivial objects. The thesis begins with an analysis of frivolous objects and their relation to their everyday context. Frivolity is then considered as a theoretical concept in juxtaposition to Jacques Derrida's semiotic analysis of the subject. Subsequently, the artworks are studied in light of the elaborated theoretical construct of frivolity and other similar states such as Georges Bataille's theory of free expenditure, various notions of the grotesque and wonder, and Gaston Bachelard's work on childhood space and the state of reverie. Finally, the Lefebvreian moment and concept of la fête are used to understand the locality of frivolity and its everyday potential as a space and time marker. Ultimately, I propose a use for the uselessly trivial by conjecturing that it may create an awareness of the here and now due to its potential to create moments, that it has the capacity to bring simultaneously differentiation while also destroying it due to its movement away from a comprehensive origin and that it explores the distance between boundaries allowing for movements to take place and irrationality to ente

Child care services, socioeconomic inequalities, and academic performance
Objective. To determine if child care services (CCS) at a population level can reduce social
inequalities in academic performance until early adolescence.
Method. A 12-year population-based prospective cohort study of families with a newborn (n =
1269). Two CCS variables were estimated: ‘intensity’ (low, moderate and high number of hours)
and ‘Center-Based CCS Type’ (early-, late-onset, and never exposed to center-based CCS).
Results. Children from low socioeconomic status (SES) families who received high-intensity
CCS (any type), compared to those who received low-intensity CCS, had significantly better
reading (Standardized Effect Size [ES]= .37), writing (ES=.37), and mathematics (ES=.46)
scores. Children from low-SES families who received center-based CCS, compared to those who
never attended center-care, had significantly better reading (ES early-onset =.68; ES late-onset =.37),
writing (ES early-onset =.79), and mathematics (ES early-onset =.66; ES late-onset =.39) scores.
Furthermore, early participation in center-based CCS eliminated the differences between
children of low- and adequate-SES on all three exams (ES = -.01, .13, and -.02 for reading,
writing and mathematics, respectively). These results were obtained while controlling for a wide
range of child and family variables from birth to school entry.
Conclusion. Child care services (any type) can reduce the social inequalities in academic
performance up to early adolescence, while early participation in center-based CCS can
eliminate this inequality. CCS use, especially early participation in center-based CCS should be
strongly encouraged for children growing up in a low-SES family

Applicability of Neuropsychological and Psychometric Tests in Autosomal Recessive Spastic Ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS)
Autosomal Recessive Spastic Ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ATSACS) is a degenerative spinocerebellar disease with pyramidal, cerebellar, and neuropathic impairments. Recent studies highlight possible deficits in cognitive functions like language. Psychometric tests selection implies careful consideration due to upper limbs incoordination and dysarthria. The objective of this study is to document the applicability of 37 neuropsychological and 2 psychological tests in 8 individuals with ARSACS aged between 20 and 60 years. All tests were rated on 4 applicability criteria using a 3-level rating scale: A for excellent; B for acceptable; C for reconsider. Most tests posed few or no applicability limits with ARSACS patients. However, certain tests (e.g., Leiter-3 and Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices) are not recommended due to significant issues related to applicability. These results may help clinicians and researchers working with this population to select evaluations and tests applicable in this population.
