Decarbonising Urban Freight Transport: Experimentations in European Research Projects
One of the objectives of European research programs is to decarbonize freight transport while maintaining its competitiveness and economic strength, reduce negative externalities such as pollutant emissions, congestion and accidents, and foster innovation. Multiple initiatives have started in Europe to reach these objectives and this paper reviews some of these schemes in the field of urban freight transport. It is based mainly on 3 EC-funded projects (BESTFACT (2016), SOLUTION (2015) and SMARTFUSION (2016)). These 3 projects are either testing (Smartfusion) or examining and disseminating European ânew solutionsâ or âbest practicesâ in freight transport. The paper mainly focuses on the most decarbonizing solutions
Best practice factory for freight transport in Europe: demonstrating how âgoodâ urban freight cases are improving business profit and public sectors benefits
The objective of this study is to better understand why selected urban freight solutions represent innovations that are technically feasible, economically profitable in different contexts, sustainable, transferable, and with tangible beneficial impacts. A total of 15 solutions are evaluated in the fields of Urban Consolidation Centre, clean and electric vehicles, IT solutions, use of urban waterways, and others. Three solutions are analysed more thoroughly, the Cityporto Padova, the Basel Exhibition Centre logistics support system, and the Berlin laboratory area test of the Bentobox. This paper ends with a transversal analysis of the solutions observed, and with methodological conclusions
Inventarisatie van voetrot-problemen in houtige siergewassen 311152
Inzendingen van zieke planten naar de DiagnostiekService van PPO geven steeds vaker aan dat de schimmel Chalara elegans (Thielaviopsis basicola), veroorzaker van voetrot, verantwoordelijk is voor ernstige uitval van planten. Chalara wordt veelal beschreven als een zwakteparasiet, maar de indruk bestaat dat niet altijd een goede diagnose wordt gesteld. De andere schimmels die vaak als boosdoener worden aangewezen komen mogelijk later binnen als secundaire schimmelaantasting op al door Chalara verzwakte planten. Het vermoeden is dat de aantasting al in het stekstadium plaatsvindt en pas later in de teeltfase de kop opsteekt, wanneer de omstandigheden voor de planten ongunstig zijn (bijv. na grote regenval). Het doel van dit onderzoek was door inventarisatie duidelijk maken in welke mate voetrot voorkomt in de teelt van siergewassen en of voetrotproblemen in siergewassen hun oorzaak vinden in een eerdere teeltfase
European womenâs views on specialist counselling for female survivors of domestic violence and abuse
Counselling for female survivors of domestic violence as practiced in five European countries (United Kingdom - UK, Bulgaria, Italy, the Netherlands and Latvia) was qualitatively explored by researchers in the UK, Germany and Portugal over two years. The effectiveness of current practice was analysed using data from 60 face-to-face interviews with clients who had received counselling. Findings revealed that regardless of which counselling model or approach is used, the effectiveness of specialist domestic violence counselling is dependent upon a positive therapeutic alliance built on mutual trust and respect and, crucially, an understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and abuse provided by highly qualified counsellors who have received domestic violence training. This article concludes by offering recommendations to inform future funding and policy decisions and avenues for future research
Nanogranular MgB2 thin films on SiC buffered Si substrates prepared by in-situ method
MgB2 thin films were deposited on SiC buffered Si substrates by sequential
electron beam evaporation of B-Mg bilayer followed by in-situ annealing. The
application of a SiC buffer layer enables the maximum annealing temperature of
830 C. The Transmission Electron Microscopy analysis confirms the growth of a
nanogranular MgB2 film and the presence of a Mg2Si compound at the surface of
the film. The 150-200 nm thick films show a maximum zero resistance critical
temperature TC0 above 37 K and a critical current density JC ~ 106 A/cm2 at

Germination of phagocytosed E. cuniculi spores does not significantly contribute to parasitophorous vacuole formation in J774 cells
The obligate intracellular microsporidia have developed a unique invasion mechanism to infect their host cells. Spores explosively evert a tube-like structure and extrude the infectious spore content through this organelle into the host cell. Spores from species of the genus Encephalitozoon were also shown to be efficiently internalized by phagocytosis, which led to the hypothesis that spore germination from inside a phagosome might contribute to the infection process. Here, we challenge this hypothesis by quantifying Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection rates of J774 cells that were incubated with the phagocytosis inhibitor cytochalasin D. We demonstrate that the invasion rate in cytochalasin D-treated cells is identical to untreated controls, although phagocytic uptake of E. cuniculi spores was less than 10% of control samples. This study suggests that germination of phagocytosed spores is not a significant infection mode for E. cuniculi
Irreversible impacts of heat on the emissions of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, phenolic BVOC and green leaf volatiles from several tree species
Climate change will induce extended heat waves to parts of the vegetation more frequently. High temperatures may act as stress (thermal stress) on plants changing emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). As BVOCs impact the atmospheric oxidation cycle and aerosol formation, it is important to explore possible alterations of BVOC emissions under high temperature conditions. Applying heat to European beech, Palestine oak, Scots pine, and Norway spruce in a laboratory setup either caused the well-known exponential increases of BVOC emissions or induced irreversible changes of BVOC emissions. Considering only irreversible changes of BVOC emissions as stress impacts, we found that high temperatures decreased the <i>de novo</i> emissions of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and phenolic BVOC. This behaviour was independent of the tree species and whether the <i>de novo</i> emissions were constitutive or induced by biotic stress. <br><br> In contrast, application of thermal stress to conifers amplified the release of monoterpenes stored in resin ducts of conifers and induced emissions of green leaf volatiles. In particular during insect attack on conifers, the plants showed <i>de novo</i> emissions of sesquiterpenes and phenolic BVOCs, which exceeded constitutive monoterpene emissions from pools. The heat-induced decrease of <i>de novo</i> emissions was larger than the increased monoterpene release caused by damage of resin ducts. For insect-infested conifers the net effect of thermal stress on BVOC emissions could be an overall decrease. <br><br> Global change-induced heat waves may put hard thermal stress on plants. If so, we project that BVOC emissions increase is more than predicted by models only in areas predominantly covered with conifers that do not emit high amounts of sesquiterpenes and phenolic BVOCs. Otherwise overall effects of high temperature stress will be lower increases of BVOC emissions than predicted by algorithms that do not consider stress impacts
GlycomeDBâa unified database for carbohydrate structures
GlycomeDB integrates the structural and taxonomic data of all major public carbohydrate databases, as well as carbohydrates contained in the Protein Data Bank, which renders the database currently the most comprehensive and unified resource for carbohydrate structures worldwide. GlycomeDB retains the links to the original databases and is updated at weekly intervals with the newest structures available from the source databases. The complete database can be downloaded freely or accessed through a Web-interface (www.glycome-db.org) that provides flexible and powerful search functionalities
Spectroscopic factors for bound s-wave states derived from neutron scattering lengths

single-particle spectroscopic factors of bound s-wave states in nuclei from neutron scattering lengths. Spectroscopic factors
for the nuclei ^{13}C, ^{14}C, ^{16}N, ^{17}O, ^{19}O, ^{23}Ne, ^{37}Ar, and
^{41}Ar are compared to results derived from transfer experiments using the
well-known DWBA analysis and to shell model calculations. The scattering length
