    Spectroscopic observation of resonant electric dipole-dipole interactions between cold Rydberg atoms

    Resonant electric dipole-dipole interactions between cold Rydberg atoms were observed using microwave spectroscopy. Laser-cooled Rb atoms in a magneto-optical trap were optically excited to 45d Rydberg states using a pulsed laser. A microwave pulse transferred a fraction of these Rydberg atoms to the 46p state. A second microwave pulse then drove atoms in the 45d state to the 46d state, and was used as a probe of interatomic interactions. The spectral width of this two-photon probe transition was found to depend on the presence of the 46p atoms, and is due to the resonant electric dipole-dipole interaction between 45d and 46p Rydberg atoms.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures.     Haplotype association of ovine leptin gene on breeding value of body measurements in Makooei sheep breed

    The research was undertaken to find association of genetic variation in the exon 3 of the leptin gene and breeding value of body weight traits in Makooei sheep breed using single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP). The PCR product was obtained to encompass exon 3 of leptin gene corresponding to ovine leptin gene. The PCR fragments were subjected to electrophoresis to reveal the SSCP patterns. Among the total of 130 sheep, five SSCP patterns (haplotypes) were identified for amplified fragment. The frequencies of SSCP patterns of polymorphic fragment were 0.09, 0.17, 0.37, 0.14 and 0.23.The relation between the different haplotypes and body measurements including body length (BL), heart girth (HG), height at withers (HW), height at back (HB), rump length (RL) and scrotal circumference (SC) were ascertained in all of the analyzed animals. According to our results, there is significant association between the different haplotypes of this fragment with additive estimated breeding value for the HG and RL traits.     Estimation of (co)variance components and breeding values for test-day milk production traits of Holstein dairy cattle via Bayesian approach

    Genetic parameters of milk, fat, and protein yields were estimated in the first lactation of Holstein dairy cattle. The records were collected during the period 2006 to 2011 and analyzed fitting the random regression model. The data included 41178, 25397 and 18716 test-day records of milk, fat and protein yields, respectively that produced by 4746, 3437 and 2525 cows respectively. Fixed effects in model included herd-year-month of test day and age-season of calving. The fixed and random regressions were modeled with normalized Legendre polynomials and (co)variance components were estimated by Bayesian method and Gibbs sampling was used to obtain posterior distributions. Estimates of heritability for milk, fat and protein yields ranged from 0.18 to 0.26; 0.06 to 0.11 and 0.09 to 0.22, respectively. Heritabilities for 305-d milk, fat and protein yields were 0.36, 0.23 and 0.29, respectively. For milk and protein yields, heritabilities were lower at the early of lactation due to the trends of lower additive genetic variance, higher permanent environmental variance. Genetic correlations for milk, fat and protein yields ranged from 0.14 to 1.00; 0.39 to 1.00 and 0.27 to 1.00, respectively. Ranges of estimated breeding values for 305-d yield of milk, fat and protein yields were from -1194.48 to 1412.44; -210.57 to 271.22 and -194.08 to 203.25, respectively. According to the results of this study, random regression model seems to be a flexible and reliable procedure for the genetic evaluation of milk production traits and it can be useful in the breeding programs for Iranian dairy cattle

    Quality enhancement in refrigerated tiger tooth croaker (Otolithes ruber) fillets using chitosan coating containing green tea extract

    The effects of chitosan (2%) coating combined with green tea extract (GTE) (1%) on the quality of tiger-tooth croaker (Otolithes ruber) fillets including chemical, microbiological, texture, color and sensory properties during 16 days of refrigerated storage was investigated. The color changes were significantly retared, and the texture parameteres and sensory scores were significantly improved in tiger- tooth croaker coated by chitosan, GTE and chitosan combined with GTE, compared with the control. The coincidental lowered rate of increase total volatile base (TVB) content, thiobarbitoric acid (TBA), peroxide value (POV) and free fatty acids (FFA) were obtained in tiger-tooth croaker coated chitosan+GTE. Chitosan in combination with GTE had higher inhibition on microbial growth and yielded the tigertooth croaker with higher likeness, compared with the other treatments. Therefore, fish coated with chitosan+GTE had the lowest losses in quality during refrigerated storage

    Observation of Rydberg blockade between two atoms

    We demonstrate experimentally that a single Rb atom excited to the 79d5/279d_{5/2} level blocks the subsequent excitation of a second atom located more than 10μm10 \mu\rm m away. The observed probability of double excitation of 30\sim 30% is consistent with a theoretical model based on calculations of the long range dipole-dipole interaction between atoms.Comment: 4 figure

    Enhancement of Rydberg-mediated single-photon nonlinearities by electrically tuned Förster resonances

    We demonstrate experimentally that Stark-tuned Förster resonances can be used to substantially increase the interaction between individual photons mediated by Rydberg interaction inside an optical medium. This technique is employed to boost the gain of a Rydberg-mediated single-photon transistor and to enhance the non-destructive detection of single Rydberg atoms. Furthermore, our all-optical detection scheme enables high-resolution spectroscopy of two-state Förster resonances, revealing the fine structure splitting of high-n Rydberg states and the non-degeneracy of Rydberg Zeeman substates in finite fields. We show that the ∣50S1/2,48S1/2⟩↔∣49P1/2,48P1/2⟩ pair state resonance in 87Rb enables simultaneously a transistor gain G>100 and all-optical detection fidelity of single Rydberg atoms F>0.8. We demonstrate for the first time the coherent operation of the Rydberg transistor with G>2 by reading out the gate photon after scattering source photons. Comparison of the observed readout efficiency to a theoretical model for the projection of the stored spin wave yields excellent agreement and thus successfully identifies the main decoherence mechanism of the Rydberg transistor

    Predicting the environmental suitability for onchocerciasis in Africa as an aid to elimination planning

    Recent evidence suggests that, in some foci, elimination of onchocerciasis from Africa may be feasible with mass drug administration (MDA) of ivermectin. To achieve continental elimination of transmission, mapping surveys will need to be conducted across all implementation units (IUs) for which endemicity status is currently unknown. Using boosted regression tree models with optimised hyperparameter selection, we estimated environmental suitability for onchocerciasis at the 5 × 5-km resolution across Africa. In order to classify IUs that include locations that are environmentally suitable, we used receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to identify an optimal threshold for suitability concordant with locations where onchocerciasis has been previously detected. This threshold value was then used to classify IUs (more suitable or less suitable) based on the location within the IU with the largest mean prediction. Mean estimates of environmental suitability suggest large areas across West and Central Africa, as well as focal areas of East Africa, are suitable for onchocerciasis transmission, consistent with the presence of current control and elimination of transmission efforts. The ROC analysis identified a mean environmental suitability index of 0.71 as a threshold to classify based on the location with the largest mean prediction within the IU. Of the IUs considered for mapping surveys, 50.2% exceed this threshold for suitability in at least one 5×5-km location. The formidable scale of data collection required to map onchocerciasis endemicity across the African continent presents an opportunity to use spatial data to identify areas likely to be suitable for onchocerciasis transmission. National onchocerciasis elimination programmes may wish to consider prioritising these IUs for mapping surveys as human resources, laboratory capacity, and programmatic schedules may constrain survey implementation, and possibly delaying MDA initiation in areas that would ultimately qualify

    Preliminary report of a nationwide case-control study for identifying risk factors of tuberculosis following renal transplantation

    Background. Tuberculosis (TB) is an important infection encountered posttransplantation, especially among patients in developing countries, where there are high incidences of morbidity and mortality. Materials and Methods. One hundred and twenty subjects (1) from 15 major kidney transplantation centers in Iran from 1984 to 2003 were compared with 440 controls who were matched for operative time, treatment center, and surgical team. Results. Mean ages of research subjects and controls were 38.6 and 36.6 years (P = .04), respectively. The mean duration of pretransplantation hemodialysis was 29 months (range, 2 to 192 months) in research subjects and 20 months (range, 1 to 180 months) in controls (P = .003). Positive past history of tuberculosis was detected in 4 (3.3) research subjects and in 7 (1.5) controls (P = .2). Fifty-two research subjects (43.3) and 241 controls (54.8) had pretransplantation purified protein derivative of tuberculin less than 5 mm (P = .02). Mean dosages of initial and maintenance immunosuppressive drugs in research subjects and in controls were not significantly different. Sixty research subjects (50) and 152 controls (34.5) had rejection prior to diagnosis of TB (P = .03). Conclusion. To our knowledge, this is the first study that demonstrates an increased risk of posttransplant TB by prolonged duration of pretransplant hemodialysis and number of posttransplant rejection episodes. Further study is needed to clarify these findings specifically with respect to various immunosuppressive regimens. © 2005 by Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

    Mapping development and health effects of cooking with solid fuels in low-income and middle-income countries, 2000–18: a geospatial modelling study

    Background: More than 3 billion people do not have access to clean energy and primarily use solid fuels to cook. Use of solid fuels generates household air pollution, which was associated with more than 2 million deaths in 2019. Although local patterns in cooking vary systematically, subnational trends in use of solid fuels have yet to be comprehensively analysed. We estimated the prevalence of solid-fuel use with high spatial resolution to explore subnational inequalities, assess local progress, and assess the effects on health in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) without universal access to clean fuels. Methods: We did a geospatial modelling study to map the prevalence of solid-fuel use for cooking at a 5 km × 5 km resolution in 98 LMICs based on 2·1 million household observations of the primary cooking fuel used from 663 population-based household surveys over the years 2000 to 2018. We use observed temporal patterns to forecast household air pollution in 2030 and to assess the probability of attaining the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target indicator for clean cooking. We aligned our estimates of household air pollution to geospatial estimates of ambient air pollution to establish the risk transition occurring in LMICs. Finally, we quantified the effect of residual primary solid-fuel use for cooking on child health by doing a counterfactual risk assessment to estimate the proportion of deaths from lower respiratory tract infections in children younger than 5 years that could be associated with household air pollution. Findings: Although primary reliance on solid-fuel use for cooking has declined globally, it remains widespread. 593 million people live in districts where the prevalence of solid-fuel use for cooking exceeds 95%. 66% of people in LMICs live in districts that are not on track to meet the SDG target for universal access to clean energy by 2030. Household air pollution continues to be a major contributor to particulate exposure in LMICs, and rising ambient air pollution is undermining potential gains from reductions in the prevalence of solid-fuel use for cooking in many countries. We estimated that, in 2018, 205 000 (95% uncertainty interval 147 000–257 000) children younger than 5 years died from lower respiratory tract infections that could be attributed to household air pollution. Interpretation: Efforts to accelerate the adoption of clean cooking fuels need to be substantially increased and recalibrated to account for subnational inequalities, because there are substantial opportunities to improve air quality and avert child mortality associated with household air pollution.
