Science Verification Results from PMAS
PMAS, the Potsdam Multi-Aperture Spectrophotometer, is a new integral field
instrument which was commissioned at the Calar Alto 3.5m Telescope in May 2001.
We report on results obtained from a science verification run in October 2001.
We present observations of the low-metallicity blue compact dwarf galaxy
SBS0335-052, the ultra-luminous X-ray Source X-1 in the Holmberg II galaxy, the
quadruple gravitational lens system Q2237+0305 (the "Einstein Cross"), the
Galactic planetary nebula NGC7027, and extragalactic planetary nebulae in M31.

Target space duality and moduli stabilization in String Gas Cosmology
Motivated by string gas cosmology, we investigate the stability of moduli
fields coming from compactifications of string gas on torus with background
flux. It was previously claimed that moduli are stabilized only at a single
fixed point in moduli space, a self-dual point of T-duality with vanishing
flux. Here, we show that there exist other stable fixed points on moduli space
with non-vanishing flux. We also discuss the more general target space
dualities associated with these fixed points.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur
Historical roots of Agile methods: where did “Agile thinking” come from?
The appearance of Agile methods has been the most noticeable change to software process thinking in the last fifteen years [16], but in fact many of the “Agile ideas” have been around since 70’s or even before. Many studies and reviews have been conducted about Agile methods which ascribe their emergence as a reaction against traditional methods. In this paper, we argue that although Agile methods are new as a whole, they have strong roots in the history of software engineering. In addition to the iterative and incremental approaches that have been in use since 1957 [21], people who criticised the traditional methods suggested alternative approaches which were actually Agile ideas such as the response to change, customer involvement, and working software over documentation. The authors of this paper believe that education about the history of Agile thinking will help to develop better understanding as well as promoting the use of Agile methods. Bound states and field-polarized Haldane modes in a quantum spin ladder
The challenge of one-dimensional systems is to understand their physics
beyond the level of known elementary excitations. By high-resolution neutron
spectroscopy in a quantum spin ladder material, we probe the leading
multiparticle excitation by characterizing the two-magnon bound state at zero
field. By applying high magnetic fields, we create and select the singlet
(longitudinal) and triplet (transverse) excitations of the fully spin-polarized
ladder, which have not been observed previously and are close analogs of the
modes anticipated in a polarized Haldane chain. Theoretical modelling of the
dynamical response demonstrates our complete quantitative understanding of

Interchain interactions and magnetic properties of Li2CuO2
An effective Hamiltonian is constructed for an insulating cuprate with
edge-sharing chains Li2CuO2.The Hamiltonian contains the nearest and
next-nearest neighboring intrachain and zigzag-type interchain interactions.The
values of the interactions are obtained from the analysis of the magnetic
susceptibility, and this system is found to be described as coupled frustrated
chains.We calculate the dynamical spin correlation function S(q,\omega) by
using the exact diagonalization method, and show that the spectra of
S(q,\omega) are characterized by the zigzag-type interchain interactions. The
results of the recent inelastic neutron scattering experiment are discussed in

Investigating the pre-main sequence magnetic chemically peculiar system HD 72106
The origin of the strong magnetic fields observed in chemically peculiar Ap
and Bp stars stars has long been debated. The recent discovery of magnetic
fields in the intermediate mass pre-main sequence Herbig Ae and Be stars links
them to Ap and Bp stars, providing vital clues about Ap and Bp stars and the
origin and evolution of magnetic fields in intermediate and high mass stars. A
detailed study of one young magnetic B star, HD 72106A, is presented. This star
appears to be in a binary system with an apparently normal Herbig Ae star. A
maximum longitudinal magnetic field strength of +391 +/- 65 G is found in HD
72106A, as are strong chemical peculiarities, with photospheric abundances of

Possible Evidence For Axino Dark Matter In The Galactic Bulge
Recently, the SPI spectrometer on the INTEGRAL satellite observed strong 511
keV line emission from the galactic bulge. Although the angular distribution
(spherically symmetric with width of \sim 9 degree) of this emission is
difficult to account for with traditional astrophysical scenarios, light dark
matter particles could account for the observation. In this letter, we consider
the possibility that decaying axinos in an R-parity violating model of
supersymmetry may be the source of this emission. We find that \sim 1-300 MeV
axinos with R-parity violating couplings can naturally produce the observed
