Discrete Model of Ideological Struggle Accounting for Migration
A discrete in time model of ideological competition is formulated taking into
account population migration. The model is based on interactions between global
populations of non-believers and followers of different ideologies. The complex
dynamics of the attracting manifolds is investigated.
Conversion from one ideology to another by means of (i) mass media influence
and (ii) interpersonal relations is considered. Moreover a different birth rate
is assumed for different ideologies, the rate being assumed to be positive for
the reference population, made of initially non-believers. Ideological
competition can happen in one or several regions in space. In the latter case,
migration of non-believers and adepts is allowed; this leads to an enrichment
of the ideological dynamics. Finally, the current ideological situation in the
Arab countries and China is commented upon from the point of view of the
presently developed mathematical model. The massive forced conversion by

Spectroscopic determination of hole density in the ferromagnetic semiconductor GaMnAs
The measurement of the hole density in the ferromagnetic semiconductor
GaMnAs is notoriously difficult using standard transport
techniques due to the dominance of the anomalous Hall effect. Here, we report
the first spectroscopic measurement of the hole density in four
GaMnAs samples () at room temperature
using Raman scattering intensity analysis of the coupled plasmon-LO-phonon mode
and the unscreened LO phonon. The unscreened LO phonon frequency linearly
decreases as the Mn concentration increases up to 8.3%. The hole density
determined from the Raman scattering shows a monotonic increase with increasing
for , exhibiting a direct correlation to the observed .
The optical technique reported here provides an unambiguous means of
determining the hole density in this important new class of ``spintronic''

Subperiosteal ganglion cyst of the tibia : a communication with the knee demonstrated by delayed arthrography
We report a patient with a subperiosteal ganglion cyst of the tibia which was imaged by radiography, arthrography, CT and MRI. The images mere correlated with the arthroscopic surgical and histological findings. Spiculated formation of periosteal new bone on plain radiographs led to the initial suspicion of a malignant tumour. Demonstration of the cystic nature of the tumour using cross-sectional imaging was important for the precise diagnosis. Communication between the ganglion cyst and the knee was shown by a delayed arthrographic technique, and the presence of this communication was confirmed at arthroscopy and surgically
Skipping orbits and enhanced resistivity in large-diameter InAs/GaSb antidot lattices
We investigated the magnetotransport properties of high-mobility InAs/GaSb
antidot lattices. In addition to the usual commensurability features at low
magnetic field we found a broad maximum of classical origin around 2.5 T. The
latter can be ascribed to a class of rosetta type orbits encircling a single
antidot. This is shown by both a simple transport calculation based on a
classical Kubo formula and an analysis of the Poincare surface of section at
different magnetic field values. At low temperatures we observe weak

Spin-dependent transport in metal/semiconductor tunnel junctions
This paper describes a model as well as experiments on spin-polarized tunnelling with the aid of optical spin orientation. This involves tunnel junctions between a magnetic material and gallium arsenide (GaAs), where the latter is optically excited with circularly polarized light in order to generate spin-polarized carriers. A transport model is presented that takes account of carrier capture in the semiconductor surface states, and describes the semiconductor surface in terms of a spin-dependent energy distribution function. The so-called surface spin-splitting can be calculated from the balance of the polarized electron and hole flow in the semiconductor subsurface region, the polarized tunnelling current across the tunnel barrier between the magnetic material and the semiconductor surface, and the spin relaxation at the semiconductor surface.
Measurements are presented of the circular-polarization-dependent photocurrent (the so-called helicity asymmetry) in thin-film tunnel junctions of Co/Al2O3/GaAs. In the absence of a tunnel barrier, the helicity asymmetry is caused by magneto-optical effects (magnetic circular dichroism). In the case where a tunnel barrier is present, the data cannot be explained by magneto-optical effects alone; the deviations provide evidence that spin-polarized tunnelling due to optical spin orientation occurs. In Co/τ-MnAl/AlAs/GaAs junctions no deviations from the magneto-optical effects are observed, most probably due to the weak spin polarization of τ-MnAl along the tunnelling direction; the latter is corroborated by bandstructure calculations. Finally, the application of photoexcited GaAs for spin-polarized tunnelling in a scanning tunnelling microscope is discussed.
Magnetic Interactions and Transport in (Ga,Cr)As
The magnetic, transport, and structural properties of (Ga,Cr)As are reported.
Zincblende GaCrAs was grown by low-temperature molecular beam
epitaxy (MBE). At low concentrations, x0.1, the materials exhibit unusual
magnetic properties associated with the random magnetism of the alloy. At low
temperatures the magnetization M(B) increases rapidly with increasing field due
to the alignment of ferromagnetic units (polarons or clusters) having large
dipole moments of order 10-10. A standard model of
superparamagnetism is inadequate for describing both the field and temperature
dependence of the magnetization M(B,T). In order to explain M(B) at low
temperatures we employ a distributed magnetic moment (DMM) model in which
polarons or clusters of ions have a distribution of moments. It is also found
that the magnetic susceptibility increases for decreasing temperature but
saturates below T=4 K. The inverse susceptibility follows a linear-T
Curie-Weiss law and extrapolates to a magnetic transition temperature
=10 K. In magnetotransport measurements, a room temperature resistivity
of =0.1 cm and a hole concentration of cm
are found, indicating that Cr can also act as a acceptor similar to Mn. The
resistivity increases rapidly for decreasing temperature below room
temperature, and becomes strongly insulating at low temperatures. The
conductivity follows exp[-(T/T)] over a large range of
conductivity, possible evidence of tunneling between polarons or clusters.Comment: To appear in PRB 15 Mar 200
Effect of acute copper sulfate exposure on olfactory responses to amino acids and pheromones in goldfish (Carassius auratus)
Exposure of olfactory epithelium to environmentally relevant concentrations of copper disrupts olfaction in fish. To examine
the dynamics of recovery at both functional and morphological levels after acute copper exposure, unilateral exposure of goldfish olfactory epithelia to 100 μM CuSO4 (10 min) was followed by electro-olfactogram (EOG) recording and scanning electron microscopy. Sensitivity to amino acids (L-arginine
and L-serine), generally considered food-related odorants, recovered most rapidly (three days), followed by that to
catecholamines(3-O-methoxytyramine),bileacids(taurolithocholic acid) and the steroid pheromone, 17,20 -dihydroxy-4-pregnen-
3-one 20-sulfate, which took 28 days to reach full recovery. Sensitivity to the postovulatory pheromone prostaglandin F2R had
not fully recovered even at 28 days. These changes in sensitivity were correlated with changes in the recovery of ciliated and microvillous receptor cell types. Microvillous cells appeared largely unaffected by CuSO4 treatment. Cilia in
ciliated receptor neurones, however, appeared damaged one day post-treatment and were virtually absent after three days but
had begun to recover after 14 days. Together, these results support the hypothesis that microvillous receptor neurones detect amino acids whereas ciliated receptor neurones were not functional and are responsible for detection of social stimuli (bile acidsandpheromones).Furthermore, differences in sensitivity to copper may be due to different transduction pathways in
the different cell types
The TANAMI Program
TANAMI (Tracking Active Galactic Nuclei with Austral Milliarcsecond
Interferometry) is a monitoring program to study the parsec-scale structures
and dynamics of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) of the
Southern Hemisphere with the Long Baseline Array and associated telescopes.
Extragalactic jets south of -30 degrees declination are observed at 8.4 GHz and
22 GHz every two months at milliarcsecond resolution. The initial TANAMI sample
is a hybrid radio and gamma-ray selected sample since the combination of VLBI
and gamma-ray observations is crucial to understand the broadband emission

Distribution of human beta-defensin polymorphisms in various control and cystic fibrosis populations.
Abstract
Human beta defensins contribute to the first line of defense against infection of the lung. Polymorphisms in these genes are therefore potential modifiers of the severity of lung disease in cystic fibrosis. Polymorphisms were sought in the human beta-defensin genes DEFB1, DEFB4, DEFB103A, and DEFB104 in healthy individuals and cystic fibrosis (CF) patients living in various European countries. DEFB1, DEFB4, and DEFB104 were very polymorphic, but DEFB103A was not. Within Europe, differences between control populations were found for some of the frequent polymorphisms in DEFB1, with significant differences between South-Italian and Czech populations. Moreover, frequent polymorphisms located in DEFB4 and DEFB104 were not in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium in all populations studied, while those in DEFB1 were in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium. Sequencing of a monochromosomal chromosome 8 mouse-human hybrid cell line revealed signals for multiple alleles for some loci in DEFB4 and DEFB104, but not for DEFB1. This indicated that more than one DEFB4 and DEFB104 gene was present on this chromosome 8, in agreement with recent findings that DEFB4 and DEFB104 are part of a repeat region. Individual DEFB4 and DEFB104 PCR amplification products of various samples were cloned and sequenced. The results showed that one DNA sample could contain more than two haplotypes, indicating that the various repeats on one chromosome were not identical. Given the higher complexity found in the genomic organization of the DEFB4 and DEFB104 genes, association studies with CF lung disease severity were performed only for frequent polymorphisms located in DEFB1. No association with the age of first infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa or with the FEV1 percentage at the age of 11-13 years could be found
