Honours Research Report 2016After the 1994 elections, housing initiatives, aimed to address the inequalities created within Apartheid, such as racial and socio-economic segregation. This resulted in the 1994 White Paper and 1997 Housing Act which encompassed some aspects of the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP). However, housing policy implementation was criticised for many reasons. This resulted in emergence of the Breaking New Ground (BNG) policy which aimed at creating sustainable human settlement, as opposed to just housing provision. In the past few years under BNG, government has adopted several programmes that promote the creation of sustainable development, sustainable human settlements and sustainable housing. In order to address this challenge and create sustainable human settlements, the eThekwini municipality envisioned the Cornubia Integrated Human Settlement Project. This is a partnership between the eThekwini municipality and Tongaat Hulett Development. Cornubia proposes a mixed-use development, with retail, commercial, light industry and residential components. The project is still under development, but phase 1a of the housing programme has been completed. The research draws on aspects and principles of sustainable development, sustainable housing and sustainable human settlements; and how the South African government engages with these principles through policies and strategies. Though the state has taken the initiative to provide housing in Durban through the Cornubia development, it is no longer sufficient to just provide housing to people, as a housing development needs to address more issues than accessing shelter. Therefore this research report looks at the sustainability practices and initiatives used within Cornubia’s Housing Programme. There are many plans and strategies put in place to ensure and promote economic, social and environmental sustainability, however, given that the housing programme is still within its early stages of development, many of these plans have either not fully materialised for have not been put in place due to lack of threshold. This results in the reality of what residents experience which contrasts what is proposed for the development, with regards to sustainability. Residents interviewed stated that they have not benefitted much (if not at all) from any plans and strategies that have supposedly been put in place. Over and above advocating for the full implementation of all plans and strategies put in place to create sustainability within the housing programme, the main recommendation of this research report is to address the title deed contract between residents and the eThekwini Municipality. Residents should be able to edit their house or use their house as collateral in order to improve their lives through creating SMMEs or acquiring loans.JJ201

Multi-scale Computer Modeling for Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

    Get PDF
Drug development and manufacturing are one of the significant processes in the pharmaceutical industry. Various computational methods have been dramatically reducing the time and cost of drug discovery and development. Improved algorithms, overgrowing powerful computing architectures and the accelerating growth of rich data sets are driving advances in multiscale modelling methods capable of bridging chemical and biological complexity from the atom to the manufacturing scale. In this talk, the roles of physics based multiscale modeling and simulations in the areas of (i) continuous manufacturing of complex dosage forms and (ii) electrostatic behavior of pharmaceutical powders will be discussed. These research efforts yielded interesting results that provided insight into the effects of various material properties and operating conditions on the success of pharmaceutical processes

Towards a Theory of Tribal Social Work: Some Reflections on its Methodological Foundation

    Get PDF
This paper engages with the theoretical evolution of Tribal Social Work in India, and attempts to provide a conceptual overview of some key constitutive elements of its methodological foundation. It uses the historical approach to trace the politico historical processes beginning 1935 and lays a framework that brings to bear significant processes that went into shaping meanings of categories and frames of reference vis-à-vis tribes. While unraveling varied processes surrounding the tribal debate in India from a critical perspective, the article posits a theoretico-methodological outline of tribal social work sourced from the author’s own experiences. This is done with the intention of advancing the theory of tribal social work within the Indian context and thus deepening and enriching social work discipline further

Keywords: CDA, anti-bullying campaign, government, Family Channel Canada, intention, role, viewers.Family Channel\u27s Anti-Bullying campaign is an unprofitable advertisement that is created by Family Channel Canada and Canadian government as the two biggest powerful sides in Canada. Although the campaign asks people to take astand against bullying, but it is well known ability to influence people and spreadinformation makes Family Channel Canada and Canadian government insert their own importance behind it. Then, CDA is a suitable approach to analyze it. The study is aimed: (1) to identify the intention behind creating Family Channel\u27s Anti-Bullying campaign; (2) to find out the role of Family Channel\u27s Anti-Bullying campaign for society; (3) to find out whether the viewers agree or disagree with Family Channel\u27s Anti-Bullying campaign. This study uses qualitative quantitative approach to provide better understanding and answer to wide range of research questions. The qualitativeresearch could provide in-depth and rich data, while the quantitative method isuseful toward generalizing research findings. This study reveals that behind the campaign, there is hidden intention to build good imagery of Canadian government and Family Channel Canada. This campaign\u27s role is to lead the society to the path that has been planned by theCanadian government and Family Channel Canada and to mold public\u27s opinion.Lastly, there are 143 agree comments from the total 509 comments, it could begeneralized that viewers actually agree with this campaign. The writer suggests the society to be more selective and smart in watchingsomething. The powerful sides also should maintain their power well and use itonly for the society needs. It would be better if the next researcher digs up deeper in the field of discourse in our daily life. Maybe, the discourse that lays behind some figures and images in advertisements. Developing the discourse behind those images could also do by combining the theory of CDA and theory of visual design

His excellency and the monk: a correspondence between Nyanaponika Thera and David Ben-Gurion

    Get PDF
Between the years 1956 and 1962 the scholar-monk Nyanaponika Thera and the first Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion have exchanged eight long letters. These letters—published here for the first time—expose the extent of Ben-Gurion's interest in Buddhism and reveal the Buddhist rhetoric used by one of Sri Lanka's most influential scholars. This rhetoric, which was generally well received by Ben-Gurion, was an exemplar of 'Protestant Buddhism'. It is suggested that Ben-Gurion could relate to this image of Buddhism because it reflected his own vision of Judaism that had 'protestant' characteristics. The letters contain autobiographical notes, unpublished comments on the Buddhist concepts of Suffering and Rebirth, and a curious plan to invite Nyanaponika to Israel

Experimental Investigation on Patterning of Anchored and Unanchored Aligned Carbon Nanotube Mats by Fluid Immersion and Evaporation

Pattern formation by capillary forces in a nanoscale system was studied experimentally. Densely packed, vertically aligned mats of order 100 microns in height comprised of 20 nm diameter multi-walled carbon nanotubes were fabricated and treated with various liquids. The carbon nanotubes deflected and rearranged under the action of surface tension as the liquids evaporated, and remained fixed once dried. The size analysis of the resulting patterns in these experiments and in the literature showed they are distributed within one standard deviation from the mean, and there are, in general, many more small sizes than large ones within a pattern. Preexisting defects in the mats were found to play a significant role in the pattern formation process, both in this work and in the literature, whereas the properties of the specific liquid used and the height of the mats did not. A novel method for anchoring the aligned mats within another material using spin-coating was developed. An anchored mat made in this way was successfully held in place even under the application of a 5.5 m/s water jet. The anchoring method allowed the first known investigation of the role of boundary conditions in this pattern formation process. Under identical experimental conditions to cases where patterns are formed in the unanchored mats, it was found that no pattern formation occurs in the anchored mats. A population balance model based on conservation of area was applied to the pattern formation process, but sufficient details are lacking to make predictions. The anchoring method and its prevention of pattern formation is a very important finding, and is relevant to applications of the aligned mats, such as field emission displays, supercapacitors, tissue culture scaffolds, and friction drag reducing surfaces.</p
