BIGRE: a low cross-talk integral field unit tailored for extrasolar planets imaging spectroscopy
Integral field spectroscopy (IFS) represents a powerful technique for the
detection and characterization of extrasolar planets through high contrast
imaging, since it allows to obtain simultaneously a large number of
monochromatic images. These can be used to calibrate and then to reduce the
impact of speckles, once their chromatic dependence is taken into account. The
main concern in designing integral field spectrographs for high contrast
imaging is the impact of the diffraction effects and the non-common path
aberrations together with an efficient use of the detector pixels. We focus our
attention on integral field spectrographs based on lenslet-arrays, discussing
the main features of these designs: the conditions of appropriate spatial and
spectral sampling of the resulting spectrograph's slit functions and their
related cross-talk terms when the system works at the diffraction limit. We
present a new scheme for the integral field unit (IFU) based on a dual-lenslet
device (BIGRE), that solves some of the problems related to the classical TIGER
design when used for such applications. We show that BIGRE provides much lower
cross-talk signals than TIGER, allowing a more efficient use of the detector
pixels and a considerable saving of the overall cost of a lenslet-based

Surgical management of Glioma Grade 4: technical update from the neuro-oncology section of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (SINch®): a systematic review
Purpose: The extent of resection (EOR) is an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (OS) in adult patients with Glioma Grade 4 (GG4). The aim of the neuro-oncology section of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (SINch®) was to provide a general overview of the current trends and technical tools to reach this goal. Methods: A systematic review was performed. The results were divided and ordered, by an expert team of surgeons, to assess the Class of Evidence (CE) and Strength of Recommendation (SR) of perioperative drugs management, imaging, surgery, intraoperative imaging, estimation of EOR, surgery at tumor progression and surgery in elderly patients. Results: A total of 352 studies were identified, including 299 retrospective studies and 53 reviews/meta-analysis. The use of Dexamethasone and the avoidance of prophylaxis with anti-seizure medications reached a CE I and SR A. A preoperative imaging standard protocol was defined with CE II and SR B and usefulness of an early postoperative MRI, with CE II and SR B. The EOR was defined the strongest independent risk factor for both OS and tumor recurrence with CE II and SR B. For intraoperative imaging only the use of 5-ALA reached a CE II and SR B. The estimation of EOR was established to be fundamental in planning postoperative adjuvant treatments with CE II and SR B and the stereotactic image-guided brain biopsy to be the procedure of choice when an extensive surgical resection is not feasible (CE II and SR B). Conclusions: A growing number of evidences evidence support the role of maximal safe resection as primary OS predictor in GG4 patients. The ongoing development of intraoperative techniques for a precise real-time identification of peritumoral functional pathways enables surgeons to maximize EOR minimizing the post-operative morbidity

ESA Voyage 2050 White Paper: Detecting life outside our solar system with a large high-contrast-imaging mission
In this white paper, we recommend the European Space Agency plays a proactive role in developing a global collaborative effort to construct a large high-contrast imaging space telescope, e.g. as currently under study by NASA. Such a mission will be needed to characterize a sizable sample of temperate Earth-like planets in the habitable zones of nearby Sun-like stars and to search for extraterrestrial biological activity. We provide an overview of relevant European expertise, and advocate ESA to start a technology development program towards detecting life outside the Solar system

One fits file for each spectrum of 51 Eridani b (SPHERE IFS-YJ, IFS-YH, Samland et al., 2017, this work; GPI-H band, Macintosh et al., 2015, Cat. J/other/Sci/350.64). The first extension of the file contains the spectrum used in the paper (fits-table). The second extension contains the correlation matrix for the uncertainty of the spectral points (fits-image). The petitCODE (a self-consistent 1d radiative-convective equilibrium code, see Molliere et al., 2015ApJ...813...47M, 2017A&A...600A..10M) atmospheric model grids (cloudy and clear) as used and described in Samland et al. 2017, this work, are provided as fits-files. The first extension contains the wavelength sampling of the model cube at a resolution of 1000 (same for all models). The second extension contains the table of all model parameter combinations (each row one model, columns represent parameters). The third extension contains the flattened model cube as 2D-fits image (index of row of table in 2nd ext. corresponds to index of model in 3rd extension). The header of the 3rd extension gives the dimensions of the model cube prior to flattening to make it easy to restore the non-flattened shape if necessary. The James Webb Space Telescope Mission
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies,
expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling
for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least .
With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000
people realized that vision as the James Webb Space Telescope. A
generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of
the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the
scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000
team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image
quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief
history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing
program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite

—Case Report—
A 49-year-old woman presented with a rare atypical growth pattern of meningioma without evidence of dural attachment manifesting as chronic headache associated with transient paresthesia and left motor disorders. On admission, neurological examination showed no abnormalities. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a right temporo-parieto-occipital lesion, which appeared to involve the subdural space and filling the cortical sulci. The lesion caused peritumoral white matter edema. The tumor appeared hypointense on T 1 -weighted and hyperintense on T 2 -weighted MR images, with homogeneous enhancement after contrast administration. A biopsy of the lesion was performed. Histological examination indicated that the lesion was a meningioma. Intraparenchymal meningiomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of intraaxial lesions in patients of any age
TRPV1, CGRP and SP in scalp arteries of patients suffering from chronic migraine
Objective: The transient receptor potential vanilloid type-1 receptor (TRPV1) and the neuropeptides calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP) appear to be differently involved in migraine pain. A role of neurovascular scalp structures is also suggested by several data. We performed a quantitative study of TRPV1-like immunoreactive (LI), CGRP-LI and SP-LI innervation of scalp arterial samples from patients affected with chronic migraine (CM).
Methods: Short segments of scalp arteries were collected from 17 participants undergoing vascular surgery for treatment-resistant CM and from 6 controls who underwent neurosurgery for various indications. The immunoreactivity of the arterial innervation to TRPV1, CGRP, SP and to the pan-neuronal marker protein gene product 9.5 (PGP9.5) was examined. Immunoreactive nerve fibres in vessel cross-sections were quantified by computerised image analysis.
Results: A significant increase of TRPV1-LI nerve fibres was found in the arterial wall from CM compared with control patients (p<0.05), while no significant difference was found for CGRP and SP.
Conclusions This study yields the first evidence for the existence of a TRPV1-LI innervation in human scalp arteries and provides the first quantitative assessment of the TRPV1-LI, CGRP-LI and SP-LI innervation of those vessels. The increase of TRPV1-LI periarterial nociceptive fibres of scalp arteries may represent, at least in some participants, a structural condition favouring CM (and possibly migraine), for example, by causing a higher sensitivity to algogenic agents
