Abiraterone acetate — is only the second line palliative treatment?
W opracowaniu przedstawiono dwóch mężczyzn z rakiem gruczołu krokowego, u których zastosowano octan abirateronu w drugiej i piątej linii leczenia z dobrym efektem terapeutycznym. One of the most common malignancies in men is prostate cancer [1]. The radical treatment of locally advanced prostate cancer are used such methods as surgery — radical prostatectomy and radiotherapy [2]. The use of hormonal therapy and palliative chemotherapy can extend the time to disease progression (PFS, progression-free survival) and overall survival (OS). Palliative hormonal therapy allows for regression biochemical improvement in general condition and reduce the pain caused by cancer. The use of anti-androgens, and steroids rotation, resulting in prolonged time to progression of the disease. In castration resistant prostate cancer to standard practice after failure of docetaxel, possible and only in Poland, is now the use of abiraterone acetate in the second line palliative treatment [3, 4].
The paper presents two cases of man with prostate cancer in the abiraterone acetate was used in the second and fifth lines of therapy with a good therapeutic effect
Proceedings in penile cancer
Carcinoma of the penis is a rare cancer, but due to therapeutic difficulties represents a significant health problem in many countries. The most common form is squamous cell histology. The occurrence is often associated with the presence of the foreskin and inadequate hygiene. Penile carcinoma manifests as a flat or ulcerative, red or gray-white spots around the foreskin or penile glans. Treatment of choice is wide surgical excision or partial/total penectomy. Prophylactic excision of inguinal lymph nodes is the subject of controversy. Radiation therapy may provide local control, particularly for small primary lesions. The incidence of relapse after radiation treatment reaches 30%, thus still is the standard surgical treatment, in particular for large changes. Chemotherapy may be used as adjuvant or palliative treatment
Skin changes during pregnancy. Is that an important issue for pregnant women?
Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of self-reported skin complaints during pregnancy, applied treatment and the impact on well-being of pregnant women.
Material and methods: We asked 1935 women that were maximum 4 years after labor to fill in our questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions concerning the course of pregnancy, observed skin lesions, applied treatment and influence on the quality of life.
Results: Skin changes during pregnancy were reported by 1447 patients (74.78%). The prevalence of self-reported skin complaints were as follows: stretch marks (77.4%), acne (21.6%) and recurrent herpes labialis (11.6%). In 43.67% (n = 632) of women who reported dermatological problems during pregnancy the disease caused significant deterioration in their well-being. Only 168 patients (11.61%) received dermatological treatment from their obstetricians. Dermatological consultation required 217 patients (14.99%). For 133 of treated women (25.68%) the recommended treatment was expensive. However, in the majority of patients (379; 73.15%) who received treatment the skin changes resolved after therapy. Skin symptoms resolved significantly faster in the treated group (3.5 ± 4.3 week vs 5.8 ± 6.2 week; p < 0.001).
Conclusions: Self-reported skin complaints seem to be a relevant problem during pregnancy. Proper skin care as well as appropriate treatment applied by obstetricians and/or dermatologists may help women to recover
Welcome to the (urban) jungle: notes on new science, biological evolution in cities
The city – a modern jungle, where not cellulose and photosynthesis but concrete and combustion reign supreme. The question now being asked by urban planners, governments, and scientists is if it may stay like that and if it can stay like that or if it has to stay like that. Social, economic, cultural, historical, and legal factors are determinants in the ecology of urban ecosystems. Even well-managed cities are usually hostile toward non-human inhabitants. Furthermore, as with any complex system, the equilibrium is fragile, even if it exists. This publication outlines the co-evolution and ecology of humans and other species in the cities, their importance, and perspectives
Accretion Disk Model of Short-Timescale Intermittent Activity in Young Radio Sources
We associate the existence of short-lived compact radio sources with the
intermittent activity of the central engine caused by a radiation pressure
instability within an accretion disk. Such objects may constitute a numerous
sub-class of Giga-Hertz Peaked Spectrum sources, in accordance with the
population studies of radio-loud active galaxies, as well as detailed
investigations of their radio morphologies. We perform the model computations
assuming the viscosity parametrization as proportional to a geometrical mean of
the total and gas pressure. The implied timescales are consistent with the
observed ages of the sources. The duration of an active phase for a moderate
accretion rate is short enough (< 10^3-10^4 years) that the ejecta are confined
within the host galaxy and thus these sources cannot evolve into large size
radio galaxies unless they are close to the Eddington limit.Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Ap
Długotrwała korzyść kliniczna z leczenia sekwencyjnego u chorego z przerzutowym rakiem nerki
Renal cell carcinoma accounts for approximately 3% of all neoplasms and it is the most common cancer of the kidney (90%). Radical nephrectomy is main surgery procedure. Tyrosine kinases inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies are being used in clinical practice for patient with metastatic disease. The report describes the clinical benefit achieved with sequential therapy in patient with metastatic renal cell carcinoma and obtaining many years of control.
Wprowadzenie do praktyki klinicznej nowych terapii hormonalnych znacząco wydłużyło czas przeżycia całkowitego (OS) u pacjentów z przerzutowym opornym na kastrację rakiem gruczołu krokowego. W niniejszym opisie przedstawiono dwa przypadki pacjentów z przerzutowym opornym na kastrację rakiem gruczołu krokowego leczonych octanem abirateronu w pierwszej linii leczenia
Upconverting Nanoparticles as a New Bio-Imaging Strategy—Investigating Intracellular Trafficking of Endogenous Processes in Neural Tissue
In recent years, rare-earth-doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) have been widely used in different life sciences due to their unique properties. Nanoparticles have become a multifunctional and promising new approach to neurobiological disorders and have shown extraordinary application potential to overcome the problems related to conventional treatment strategies. This study evaluated the internalization mechanisms, bio-distribution, and neurotoxicity of NaYF4:20%Yb3+,2%Er3+ UCNPs in rat organotypic hippocampal slices. TEM results showed that UCNPs were easily internalized by hippocampal cells and co-localized with selected organelles inside neurons and astrocytes. Moreover, the UCNPs were taken into the neurons via clathrin- and caveolae-mediated endocytosis. Propidium iodide staining and TEM analysis did not confirm the adverse effects of UCNPs on hippocampal slice viability and morphology. Therefore, UCNPs may be a potent tool for bio-imaging and testing new therapeutic strategies for brain diseases in the future
