    Reweighted nuclear norm regularization: A SPARSEVA approach

    The aim of this paper is to develop a method to estimate high order FIR and ARX models using least squares with re-weighted nuclear norm regularization. Typically, the choice of the tuning parameter in the reweighting scheme is computationally expensive, hence we propose the use of the SPARSEVA (SPARSe Estimation based on a VAlidation criterion) framework to overcome this problem. Furthermore, we suggest the use of the prediction error criterion (PEC) to select the tuning parameter in the SPARSEVA algorithm.     Effect of tensile stress on the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in BaFe2As2

    The effect of uniaxial tensile stress and the resultant strain on the structural/magnetic transition in the parent compound of the iron arsenide superconductor, BaFe2_2As2_2, is characterized by temperature-dependent electrical resistivity, x-ray diffraction and quantitative polarized light imaging. We show that strain induces a measurable uniaxial structural distortion above the first-order magnetic transition and significantly smears the structural transition. This response is different from that found in another parent compound, SrFe2_2As2_2, where the coupled structural and magnetic transitions are strongly first order. This difference in the structural responses explains the in-plain resistivity anisotropy above the transition in BaFe2_2As2_2. This conclusion is supported by the Ginzburg-Landau - type phenomenological model for the effect of the uniaxial strain on the resistivity anisotropy

    . This paper presents the results of a study about elastic lateral torsional buckling of web tapered cantilever I beams. Elastic buckling analysis was carried out on a number of web tapered cantilever I beam. Beam parameters are expressed in term of dimensionless parameter for lateral torsional buckling and the slope of the side of the tapered web. The analysis is performed using finite element method and the SAP 2000 v 14 program is used to do the analysis. The finite element formulation is based on bifurcation theory. This theory leads to Eigen Value Problem. Critical moment is the lowest Eigen value. The load to be considered is point load at the free end of the beam and uniformly distributed load. Three location of load are considered. The first is at shear center, the second is at top flange and the third is at the bottom flange.From this study, it can be concluded that the slope of the side of tapered web has little influence on the critical moment. But the influence of load height on critical moment is strongly influenced by the slope of the side of the tapered web. Equations for estimating the critical moment has been obtained by regression of the data results of the finite element method

    Metal and metalloid exposure and oxidative status in free-living individuals of Myotis daubentonii

    Metal elements, ubiquitous in the environment, can cause negative effects in long-lived organisms even after low but prolonged exposure. Insectivorous bats living near metal emission sources can be vulnerable to such contaminants. Although it is known that bats can bioaccumulate metals, little information exists on the effects of metal elements on their physiological status. For example, oxidative status markers are known to vary after detoxification processes and immune reactions. Here, for two consecutive summers, we sampled individuals from a natural population of the insectivorous bat, Myotis daubentonii, inhabiting a site close to a metal emission source. We quantified metals and metalloids (As, Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn) from individual fecal pellets. We measured enzymatic antioxidants (GP, CAT, SOD), total glutathione (tGSH) and ratio between reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH:GSSG) from their red blood cells together with biometrics, hematocrit and parasite prevalence. In general, metal concentrations in feces of M. daubentonii reflected the exposure to ambient contamination. This was especially evident in the higher concentrations of Cd, Co, Cu and Ni close to a smelter compared to a site with less contaminant exposure. Annual differences were also observed for most elements quantified. Sex-specific differences were observed for calcium and zinc excretion. SOD and CAT enzymatic activities were associated with metal levels (principal components of six metal elements), suggesting early signs of chronic stress in bats. The study also shows promise for the use of non-invasive sampling to assess the metal exposure on an individual basis and metal contamination in the environment.Peer reviewe

    Uniaxial strain detwinning of CaFe2As2 and BaFe2As2: optical and transport study

    TThe parent compounds of iron-arsenide superconductors, AAFe2_{2}As2_{2} (AA=Ca, Sr, Ba), undergo a tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition at a temperature TTOT_{\mathrm{TO}} in the range 135 to 205K depending on the alkaline earth element. Below TTOT_{\mathrm{TO}} the free standing crystals split into equally populated structural domains, which mask intrinsic, in-plane, anisotropic properties of the materials. Here we demonstrate a way of mechanically detwinning CaFe2_{2}As2_{2} and BaFe2_{2}As2_{2}. The detwinning is nearly complete, as demonstrated by polarized light imaging and synchrotron XX-ray measurements, and reversible, with twin pattern restored after strain release. Electrical resistivity measurements in the twinned and detwinned states show that resistivity, ρ\rho, decreases along the orthorhombic aoa_{o}-axis but increases along the orthorhombic bob_{o}-axis in both compounds. Immediately below TTOT_{\mathrm{TO}} the ratio ρbo/ρao\rho_{bo}/ \rho_{ao} = 1.2 and 1.5 for Ca and Ba compounds, respectively. Contrary to CaFe2_{2}As2_{2}, BaFe2_{2}As2_{2} reveals an anisotropy in the nominally tetragonal phase, suggesting that either fluctuations play a larger role above TTOT_{\mathrm{TO}} in BaFe2_{2}As2_{2} than in CaFe2_{2}As2_{2}, or that there is a higher temperature crossover or phase transition.Comment: extended versio
