Machine Learning of Generic and User-Focused Summarization

A key problem in text summarization is finding a salience function which determines what information in the source should be included in the summary. This paper describes the use of machine learning on a training corpus of documents and their abstracts to discover salience functions which describe what combination of features is optimal for a given summarization task. The method addresses both "generic" and user-focused summaries.Comment: In Proceedings of the Fifteenth National Conference on AI (AAAI-98), p. 821-82

Machine Learning of User Profiles: Representational Issues

As more information becomes available electronically, tools for finding information of interest to users becomes increasingly important. The goal of the research described here is to build a system for generating comprehensible user profiles that accurately capture user interest with minimum user interaction. The research described here focuses on the importance of a suitable generalization hierarchy and representation for learning profiles which are predictively accurate and comprehensible. In our experiments we evaluated both traditional features based on weighted term vectors as well as subject features corresponding to categories which could be drawn from a thesaurus. Our experiments, conducted in the context of a content-based profiling system for on-line newspapers on the World Wide Web (the IDD News Browser), demonstrate the importance of a generalization hierarchy and the promise of combining natural language processing techniques with machine learning (ML) to address an information retrieval (IR) problem.Comment: 6 page

    MEMS 411 - Prosthetic Arm Group W

The customer, Ilana, sought to find a prosthetic arm to replace her current staticprosthetic. She has gotten used to using a prosthetic with no variable grips anda somewhat heavy weight that can be a burden when dealing with her child orday to day tasks. The design described in this report is an electronically poweredprosthetic that used a button to change between open and closed grips

Energy Dissipation of Fast Electrons in Polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA): Towards a Universal Curve for Electron Beam Attenuation in Solids for Energies between ~0 eV and 100 keV

Wolfgang S.M. Werner, Florian Simperl, Felix Bloedorn, Julian Brunner, Johannes Kero, Alessandra Bellissimo and Olga Ridzel Spectroscopy of correlated electron pairs was employed to investigate the energy dissipation process as well as the transport and the emission of low energy electrons on a polymethylmetracylate (PMMA) surface, providing secondary electron (SE) spectra causally related to the energy loss of the primary electron. Two groups of electrons are identified in the cascade of slow electrons, corresponding to different stages in the energy dissipation process. For both groups, the characteristic lengths for attenuation due to collective excitations and momentum relaxation are quantified and are found to be distinctly different: l1=(12.0+/-2) Angstroem and l2=(61.5+/-11) Angstroem. The results strongly contradict the commonly employed model of exponential attenuation with the electron inelastic mean free path (IMFP) as characteristic length, but essentially agree with a theory used for decades in astrophysics and neutron transport, albeit with characteristic lengths expressed in units of Angstroems rather than lightyears.Comment: 6 pages 5 figure

Eficiência do herbicida foramsulfuron + iodosulfuron no controle de plantas daninhas na cultura do milho

The objective of this study was to determine efficiency of herbicide foramsulfuron + iodosulfuron applied as post-emergence to control weeds in corn plantations. The experiment was established at UNIOESTE – Campus de Marechal Cândido Rondon, from October 2000 to March 2001. The postemergence application of the herbicides was executed at the 4 – 5 fully expanded corn leaves. We used a backpack pulverizer at constant pressure (CO2) of 2,1 Kgf/cm2 and a bar equipped with 6 XR Teejet 110-02 nozzles that delivered 200 l/ha. The experimental design was a randomized block design with 4 repetitions. Treatments consisted of: foramsulfuron (35 and 45.3 g/ha), foramsulfuron + iodosulfuron (36 + 2.4 e 45 + 3 g/ha), foramsulfuron + atrazine (35 + 1000 and 45.5 + 1000 g/ha), nicosulfuron (50 g/ha), hoed and non hoed control. All products had excellent control of weeds present on the experimental plots. None of the herbicides caused any injury to the corn. No significant difference in corn production was detected as result of the tested herbicides. On the other hand, all treatments yielded corn production superior to the non hoed control.
