    Control Force Compensation in Ground-Based Flight Simulators

    This paper presents the results of a study that investigated if controller force compensations accounting for the inertial force and moment due to the aircraft motion during flight have a significant effect on pilot control behavior and performance. Seven rotorcraft pilots performed a side-step and precision hovering task in light turbulence in the Vertical Motion Simulator. The effects of force compensation were examined for two different simulated rotorcraft: linear and UH-60 dynamics with two different force gradient of the lateral stick control. Four motion configurations were used: large motion, hexapod motion, fixed-base motion, and fixed-base motion with compensation. Control-input variables and task performance such as the time to translate to the designated hover position, station-keeping position errors, and handling qualities ratings were used as measures. Control force compensation enabled pilot control behavior and performance more similar to that under high- or medium-fidelity motion to some extent only. Control force compensation did not improve overall task performance considering both rotorcraft models at the same time. The control force compensation had effects on the linear model with lighter force gradient, but only a minimal effect on pilots? control behavior and task performance for the UH-60 model, which had a higher force gradient. This suggests that the control force compensation has limited benefits for controllers that have higher stiffness

    VSCAN: An Enhanced Video Summarization using Density-based Spatial Clustering

    In this paper, we present VSCAN, a novel approach for generating static video summaries. This approach is based on a modified DBSCAN clustering algorithm to summarize the video content utilizing both color and texture features of the video frames. The paper also introduces an enhanced evaluation method that depends on color and texture features. Video Summaries generated by VSCAN are compared with summaries generated by other approaches found in the literature and those created by users.     Connecting brain and behavior in clinical neuroscience: A network approach

    In recent years, there has been an increase in applications of network science in many different fields. In clinical neuroscience and psychopathology, the developments and applications of network science have occurred mostly simultaneously, but without much collaboration between the two fields. The promise of integrating these network applications lies in a united framework to tackle one of the fundamental questions of our time: how to understand the link between brain and behavior. In the current overview, we bridge this gap by introducing conventions in both fields, highlighting similarities, and creating a common language that enables the exploitation of synergies. We provide research examples in autism research, as it accurately represents research lines in both network neuroscience and psychological networks. We integrate brain and behavior not only semantically, but also practically, by showcasing three methodological avenues that allow to combine networks of brain and behavioral data. As such, the current paper offers a stepping stone to further develop multi-modal networks and to integrate brain and behavior

    This report describes open flux chamber measurements on the Holcim grooved floor type B for dairy cattle compared to a slatted concrete floor as references. Results show that ammonia emission was 39% compared to the slatted floor. However it should be noticed that this are only explorative measurements that need validation at full scale

    Using sonic anemometer temperature to measure sensible heat flux in strong winds

    Sonic anemometers simultaneously measure the turbulent fluctuations of vertical wind (<i>w</i>') and sonic temperature (<i>T</i><sub>s</sub>'), and are commonly used to measure sensible heat flux (<i>H</i>). Our study examines 30-min heat fluxes measured with a Campbell Scientific CSAT3 sonic anemometer above a subalpine forest. We compared <i>H</i> calculated with <i>T</i><sub>s</sub> to <i>H</i> calculated with a co-located thermocouple and found that, for horizontal wind speed (<i>U</i>) less than 8 m s<sup>−1</sup>, the agreement was around ±30 W m<sup>−2</sup>. However, for <i>U</i> ≈ 8 m s<sup>−1</sup>, the CSAT <i>H</i> had a generally positive deviation from <i>H</i> calculated with the thermocouple, reaching a maximum difference of ≈250 W m<sup>−2</sup> at <i>U</i> ≈ 18 m s<sup>−1</sup>. With version 4 of the CSAT firmware, we found significant underestimation of the speed of sound and thus <i>T</i><sub>s</sub> in high winds (due to a delayed detection of the sonic pulse), which resulted in the large CSAT heat flux errors. Although this <i>T</i><sub>s</sub> error is qualitatively similar to the well-known fundamental correction for the crosswind component, it is quantitatively different and directly related to the firmware estimation of the pulse arrival time. For a CSAT running version 3 of the firmware, there does not appear to be a significant underestimation of <i>T</i><sub>s</sub>; however, a <i>T</i><sub>s</sub> error similar to that of version 4 may occur if the CSAT is sufficiently out of calibration. An empirical correction to the CSAT heat flux that is consistent with our conceptual understanding of the <i>T</i><sub>s</sub> error is presented. Within a broader context, the surface energy balance is used to evaluate the heat flux measurements, and the usefulness of side-by-side instrument comparisons is discussed
