On the usefulness of finding charts Or the runaway carbon stars of the Blanco & McCarthy field 37
We have been recently faced with the problem of cross--identifying stars
recorded in historical catalogues with those extracted from recent fully
digitized surveys (such as DENIS and 2MASS). Positions mentioned in the old
catalogues are frequently of poor precision, but are generally accompanied by
finding charts where the interesting objects are flagged. Those finding charts
are sometimes our only link with the accumulated knowledge of past literature.
While checking the identification of some of these objects in several
catalogues, we had the surprise to discover a number of discrepancies in recent
works.The main reason for these discrepancies was generally the blind
application of the smallest difference in position as the criterion to identify
sources from one historical catalogue to those in more recent surveys. In this
paper we give examples of such misidentifications, and show how we were able to
find and correct them.We present modern procedures to discover and solve
cross--identification problems, such as loading digitized images of the sky
through the Aladin service at CDS, and overlaying entries from historical
catalogues and modern surveys. We conclude that the use of good finding charts
still remains the ultimate (though time--consuming) tool to ascertain

Preheating After Modular Inflation
We study (p)reheating in modular (closed string) inflationary scenarios, with
a special emphasis on Kahler moduli/Roulette models. It is usually assumed that
reheating in such models occurs through perturbative decays. However, we find
that there are very strong non-perturbative preheating decay channels related
to the particular shape of the inflaton potential (which is highly nonlinear
and has a very steep minimum). Preheating after modular inflation, proceeding
through a combination of tachyonic instability and broad-band parametric
resonance, is perhaps the most violent example of preheating after inflation
known in the literature. Further, we consider the subsequent transfer of energy
to the standard model sector in scenarios where the standard model particles
are confined to a D7-brane wrapping the inflationary blow-up cycle of the
compactification manifold or, more interestingly, a non-inflationary blow up
cycle. We explicitly identify the decay channels of the inflaton in these two
scenarios. We also consider the case where the inflationary cycle shrinks to
the string scale at the end of inflation; here a field theoretical treatment of
reheating is insufficient and one must turn instead to a stringy description.
We estimate the decay rate of the inflaton and the reheat temperature for

Electromagnetic emission of white dwarf binary mergers
It has been recently proposed that the ejected matter from white dwarf (WD)
binary mergers can produce transient, optical and infrared emission similar to
the "kilonovae" of neutron star (NS) binary mergers. To confirm this we
calculate the electromagnetic emission from WD-WD mergers and compare with
kilonova observations. We simulate WD-WD mergers leading to a massive, fast
rotating, highly magnetized WD with an adapted version of the
smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics (SPH) code Phantom. We thus obtain initial
conditions for the ejecta such as escape velocity, mass and initial position
and distribution. The subsequent thermal and dynamical evolution of the ejecta
is obtained by integrating the energy-conservation equation accounting for
expansion cooling and a heating source given by the fallback accretion onto the
newly-formed WD and its magneto-dipole radiation. We show that magnetospheric
processes in the merger can lead to a prompt, short gamma-ray emission of up to
erg in a timescale of - s. The bulk of the ejecta
initially expands non-relativistically with velocity and then it
accelerates to due to the injection of fallback accretion energy. The
ejecta become transparent at optical wavelengths around days
post-merger with a luminosity - erg s. The X-ray
emission from the fallback accretion becomes visible around -
day post-merger with a luminosity of erg s. We also predict
the post-merger time at which the central WD should appear as a pulsar

Kahler moduli double inflation
We show that double inflation is naturally realized in K\"ahler moduli
inflation, which is caused by moduli associated with string compactification.
We find that there is a small coupling between the two inflatons which leads to
amplification of perturbations through parametric resonance in the intermediate
stage of double inflation. This results in the appearance of a peak in the
power spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation. We numerically
calculate the power spectrum and show that the power spectrum can have a peak
on observationally interesing scales. We also compute the TT-spectrum of CMB
based on the power spectrum with a peak and see that it better fits WMAP

Clinical Features And Laboratory Patterns In A Cohort Of Consecutive Argentinian Patients With Von Willebrand's Disease
Background and Objectives. von Willebrand's disease (vWD) is a bleeding disorder with variable clinical expression. Our aim was to classify patients with vWD and to determine the phenotype in their relatives. Design and Methods. The types and subtypes, blood group frequency and its relevance, bleeding sites, response to the desmopressin (DDAVP) test, transfusion requirements and clinical features in type 1 and 2A families were determined in 1,885 patients. Results. Our findings were: type 1: 91%, type 2A: 3.1%, severe vWD: 1.3%; type 2N: 1.6%; type low intraplatelet: 2.7%; combined 1+2N: 0.3%. Blood group O prevalence was 70.5%. Bleeding and transfusion requirements were not correlated to blood groups. The most frequent symptoms were: ecchymoses-hematomas and epistaxis and, in females over 13 years, also menorrhagia. Normal levels of factor VIII:C were found in 38.4% of the patients. DDAVP was infused in 567 patients with a good response in 80.6%. About 9% of our patients needed transfusion therapy. The diagnosis of von Willebrandâs disease is more likely in subjects belonging to families with type 2A disease than in members of families with type 1 vWD in spite of these being symptomatic. Interpretation and Conclusions. These observations provide a good strategy to identify, classify and treat vWD patients without performing molecular assays.Fil: Woods, Adriana InĂ©s. Surface stress of Ni adlayers on W(110): the critical role of the surface atomic structure
Puzzling trends in surface stress were reported experimentally for Ni/W(110)
as a function of Ni coverage. In order to explain this behavior, we have
performed a density-functional-theory study of the surface stress and atomic
structure of the pseudomorphic and of several different possible 1x7
configurations for this system. For the 1x7 phase, we predict a different, more
regular atomic structure than previously proposed based on surface x-ray
diffraction. At the same time, we reproduce the unexpected experimental change
of surface stress between the pseudomorphic and 1x7 configuration along the
crystallographic surface direction which does not undergo density changes. We
show that the observed behavior in the surface stress is dominated by the

Strings at the bottom of the deformed conifold
We present solutions of the equations of motion of macroscopic F and D
strings extending along the non compact 4D sections of the conifold geometry
and winding around the internal directions. The effect of the Goldstone modes
associated with the position of the strings on the internal manifold can be
seen as a current on the string that prevents it from collapsing and allows the
possibility of static 4D loops. Its relevance in recent models of brane

Validity of water industry wastes in cement industry
This paper examines the validity of several water industry wastes to be reused in different stages of cement production. The wastes considered are: a drinking water treatment plant sludge (DWTP), a sewage sludge (SS) and a spent activated carbon. Different procedures of drying of wastes using a novel dry spray system or subjected to thermal drying or stabilization and dried with lime are analysed. The spray drying process was successfully used with the DWTP sludge (but not with SS). The material was not found to be suitable as a supplementary material in blended cements. Despite this, the spray dried sludge did show good potential as partial or full substitute for clay as a raw material in cement clinker manufacture. A novel thermally drying process (Turbo-drying RINA-JET) was applied to produce dried sewage sludge. The dry sludge consisted of 56 % organic matter and has a high calorific value (8291 J / g), making it valid as an alternative fuel. The ash (35% of dry SS) contains Ca, Fe, P, Si and Al as main inorganic elements which are incorporated into the clinker phases. The burnability of the raw mixture containing this SS sludge was better than in the control raw mix. Furthermore, the paper describes an industrial process for stabilising sewage sludge (SS) with lime and evaluates the viability of the stabilised product, referred to as âNeutralâ, as a raw material in the production of Portland cement clinker for the cement industry. The proposed process for sewage sludge treatment has a number of advantages over traditional treatments. In the Basic plant design, the chemical energy in the reagents generates sufficient thermal energy for the moisture to evaporate. This makes the process more energy-efficient than others. The validity of the âNeutralâ product as a starting material in raw mixes for the production of cement clinker by substitution of limestone is demonstrated. Regarding the validity of spent activated carbon as an alternative to pet coke as fuel in Portland cement kilns, the carbon differed substantially from the coke, having lower calorific value (18 % less). However, the qualities of the spent coke were still sufficient for the intended use. The ash fraction of the spent activated carbon was mainly composed of anhydrite and quartz (SO3 = 14.1 %) and it is included into the clinker phases during the burning. The SO3 from the ashes promotes a very large growth in alite crystals in the clinker
Amenability of algebras of approximable operators
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for amenability of the Banach
algebra of approximable operators on a Banach space. We further investigate the
relationship between amenability of this algebra and factorization of
operators, strengthening known results and developing new techniques to
determine whether or not a given Banach space carries an amenable algebra of
approximable operators. Using these techniques, we are able to show, among
other things, the non-amenability of the algebra of approximable operators on

Lattice dynamical signature of charge density wave formation in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x
We report a detailed Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics in
detwinned single crystals of the underdoped high temperature superconductor
YBa2Cu3O6+x (x=0.75, 0.6, 0.55 and 0.45). Whereas at room temperature the
phonon spectra of these compounds are similar to that of optimally doped
YBa2Cu3O6.99, additional Raman-active modes appear upon cooling below ~170-200
K in underdoped crystals. The temperature dependence of these new features
indicates that they are associated with the incommensurate charge density wave
state recently discovered using synchrotron x-ray scattering techniques on the
same single crystals. Raman scattering has thus the potential to explore the
evolution of this state under extreme conditions.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure
