VISIR-VLT high resolution study of the extended emission of four obscured post-AGB candidates
The onset of the asymmetry of planetary nebulae (PNe) is expected to occur
during the late Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) and early post-AGB phases of low-
and intermediate-mass stars. Among all post-AGB objects, the most heavily
obscured ones might have escaped the selection criteria of previous studies
detecting extreme axysimmetric structures in young PNe. Since the most heavily
obscured post-AGB sources can be expected to descend from the most massive PN
progenitors, these should exhibit clear asymmetric morphologies. We have
obtained VISIR-VLT mid-IR images of four heavily obscured post-AGB objects
barely resolved in previous Spitzer IRAC observations to analyze their
morphology and physical conditions across the mid-IR. The VISIR-VLT images have
been deconvolved, flux calibrated, and used to construct RGB composite pictures
as well as color and optical depth maps that allow us to study the morphology
and physical properties of the extended emission of these sources. We have
detected extended emission from the four objects in our sample and resolved it
into several structural components that are greatly enhanced in the temperature
and optical depth maps. They reveal the presence of asymmetry in three young
PNe (IRAS 15534-5422, IRAS 17009-4154, and IRAS 18454+0001), where the
asymmetries can be associated with dusty torii and slightly bipolar outflows.
The fourth source (IRAS 18229-1127), a possible post-AGB star, is better
described as a rhomboidal detached shell. The heavily obscured sources in our
sample do not show extreme axisymmetric morphologies. This is at odds with the
expectation of highly asymmetrical morphologies in post-AGB sources descending
from massive PN progenitors. The sources presented in this paper may be
sampling critical early phases in the evolution of massive PN progenitors,
before extreme asymmetries develop.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Enhanced dimerization of TiOCl under pressure: spin-Peierls - to - Peierls transition
We report high-pressure x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements
combined with ab-initio calculations to demonstrate that the high-pressure
optical and transport transitions recently reported in TiOCl, correspond in
fact to an enhanced Ti3+-Ti3+ dimerization existing already at room
temperature. Our results confirm the formation of a metal-metal bond between
Ti3+ ions along the b-axis of TiOCl, accompanied by a strong reduction of the
electronic gap. The evolution of the dimerization with pressure suggests a
crossover from the spin-Peierls to a conventional Peierls situation at high
pressures.Comment: 9pages, 4 figure
Medium induced QCD cascades: broadening, entropy and rescattering during branching
We study evolution equations describing jet propagation through quark--gluon
plasma (QGP). In particular we investigate the contribution of momentum
transfer during branching and find that such a contribution is sizeable.
Furthermore, we study various approximations, such as the Gaussian
approximation and the diffusive approximation to the jet-broadening term. We
notice that in order to reproduce the BDIM equation (without the momentum
transfer in the branching) the diffusive approximation requires a very large
value of the jet-quenching parameter . We also quantify the solutions
by calculating time dependence of entropy associated with each of the
distributions.Comment: 21 page
Lattice dynamical signature of charge density wave formation in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x
We report a detailed Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics in
detwinned single crystals of the underdoped high temperature superconductor
YBa2Cu3O6+x (x=0.75, 0.6, 0.55 and 0.45). Whereas at room temperature the
phonon spectra of these compounds are similar to that of optimally doped
YBa2Cu3O6.99, additional Raman-active modes appear upon cooling below ~170-200
K in underdoped crystals. The temperature dependence of these new features
indicates that they are associated with the incommensurate charge density wave
state recently discovered using synchrotron x-ray scattering techniques on the
same single crystals. Raman scattering has thus the potential to explore the
evolution of this state under extreme conditions.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure
Field theory simulation of Abelian-Higgs cosmic string cusps
We have performed a lattice field theory simulation of cusps in Abelian-Higgs
cosmic strings. The results are in accord with the theory that the portion of
the strings which overlaps near the cusp is released as radiation. The radius
of the string cores which must touch to produce the evaporation is
approximately in natural units. In general, the modifications to the
string shape due to the cusp may produce many cusps later in the evolution of a
string loop, but these later cusps will be much smaller in magnitude and more
closely resemble kinks.Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, 13 figures with eps
Amenability of algebras of approximable operators
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for amenability of the Banach
algebra of approximable operators on a Banach space. We further investigate the
relationship between amenability of this algebra and factorization of
operators, strengthening known results and developing new techniques to
determine whether or not a given Banach space carries an amenable algebra of
approximable operators. Using these techniques, we are able to show, among
other things, the non-amenability of the algebra of approximable operators on
Tsirelson's space.Comment: 20 pages, to appear in Israel Journal of Mathematic
Surface stress of Ni adlayers on W(110): the critical role of the surface atomic structure
Puzzling trends in surface stress were reported experimentally for Ni/W(110)
as a function of Ni coverage. In order to explain this behavior, we have
performed a density-functional-theory study of the surface stress and atomic
structure of the pseudomorphic and of several different possible 1x7
configurations for this system. For the 1x7 phase, we predict a different, more
regular atomic structure than previously proposed based on surface x-ray
diffraction. At the same time, we reproduce the unexpected experimental change
of surface stress between the pseudomorphic and 1x7 configuration along the
crystallographic surface direction which does not undergo density changes. We
show that the observed behavior in the surface stress is dominated by the
effect of a change in Ni adsorption/coordination sites on the W(110) surface.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures Published in J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 24 (2012)

Performances of multi-gap timing RPCs for relativistic ions in the range Z=1-6
We present the performance of Multi-gap timing RPCs under irradiation by
fully stripped relativistic ions (gamma*beta=2.7, Z=1-6). A time resolution of
80 ps at high efficiency has been obtained by just using standard `off the
shelf' 4-gap timing RPCs from the new HADES ToF wall. The resolution worsened
to 100 ps for ~ 1 kHz/cm2 proton flux and for ~ 100 Hz/cm2 Carbon flux. The
chambers were operated at a standard field of E=100 kV/cm and showed a high
stability during the experiment, supporting the fact that RPCs are a convenient
choice when accommodating a very broad range of ionizing particles is needed.
The data provides insight in the region of very highly ionizing particles (up
to x 36 mips) and can be used to constrain the existing avalanche and
Space-Charge models far from the usual `mip valley'. The implications of these
results for the general case of detection based on secondary processes (n,
gamma) resulting in highly ionizing particles with characteristic energy
distributions will be discussed, together with the nature of the time-charge
correlation curve.Comment: 31 pages, 19 figures, submitted to JINS
