The paper illustrates the possibility of relating the fundamental laws of logical thinking with the basic principles to thermodynamics. According to this hypothesis, the idea of a “transcendental realm” that hosts the a priori categories of understanding is no longer needed, because human logic can be regarded as the result of a process of fine-tuning in our mind’s ability to perceive of patterns of identity and change in nature.El artículo ilustra la posibilidad de establecer una relación entre las leyes fundamentales del pensamiento lógico y los principios básicos de la termodinámica. Según esta hipótesis, la idea de un “ámbito trascendental” que albergue las categorías a priori del entendimiento resulta innecesaria, porque la lógica humana puede comprenderse como el fruto de un proceso de refinamiento paulatino en la capacidad de la mente para percibir patrones de identidad y cambio en la naturaleza

El Constructivismo Biológico: ¿Una alternativa al realismo?

Pasamos revista a los distintos enfoques que, en los últimos tiempos, se reclaman constructivistas dentro de un enfoque biológico del conocimiento. Se pretende dilucidar si efectivamente ellos constituyen una verdadera alternativa al realismo. Tanto si se oponen frontalmente al realismo como si se sitúan simétricamente en sus antípodas, estos enfoques podrían estar lastrados por la misma metafísica que pretenden orillar. Revisaremos especialmente las teorías de Maturana, von Glasersfeld y la biosemiótica de Emmeche y Kull. Repasaremos los distintos antecedentes filosóficos que pretenden haber superado, para reflexionar acerca de si no son tan inconsistentes como el propio realismo, su enemigo

Addiction At the Biennale of Venice

In this paper we analyse the socio-economic characteristics (e.g. age, gender, education, nationality) associated with the probability of subscribing to an art review, among visitors of the Visual Arts Biennale of Venice taking into account the heterogeneity of the data. The analysis uses a data set from a questionnaire given in Venice in 2003 to ascertain the key characteristics of the Biennale visitors, (Bernardi, Pizzi and Vecco, 2004). A Bayesian random parameter logit model is used with Gibbs sampling to verify the hypothesis that subscribing to an art review given that the individual visits the Biennale, defines addiction to visual arts. This model outperforms the standard logit model since it takes into account the unobserved heterogeneity of the sample data. γ\gamma-Cascade: A Simple Program to Compute Cosmological Gamma-Ray Propagation

Modeling electromagnetic cascades during gamma-ray transport is important in many applications within astrophysics. This document introduces $\gamma$-Cascade, a publicly available Mathematica package which allows users to calculate observed gamma-ray fluxes from point sources as well as from a distribution of sources. $\gamma$-Cascade semi-analytically computes the effects of electromagnetic interactions during gamma-ray transport.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

This paper aims to offer a broad criticism of the underpinnings of the so-called "complexity-theories" in their approach to a problem that has puzzled philosophers and scientists for centuries: the relationship between mind and body. We will pay special attention to the ideas of Alicia Juarrero, a distinguished exponent of this explanatory model, whose epistemological implications will be outlined in regard to her diffuse understanding of casuality.El artículo plantea una crítica general de los fundamentos subyacentes a las denominadas "teorías de la complejidad", al menos en su tratamiento de un problema que ha desconcertado a filósofos y científicos a lo largo de los siglos: la relación entre la mente y el cuerpo. Presta especial atención a las ideas de Alicia Juarrero, exponente distinguida de este modelo explicativo, con el objetivo de discutir las implicaciones epistemológicas de su proyecto, sobre todo de su difusa comprensión de la causalidad
