Amber Outskirts

Amber Outskirts opens with 25-year-old Penelope Moore searching for the girl she once loved, Amber, who disappeared after they shared a drug-fuelled night. Penny finds Amber in a gritty town in rural New South Wales where she is every bit as wild, but now married to a brutal man, Pete. There’s no room for Penny in Amber’s new life, but Penny can’t stay away. Penny gets a job at the local orchard, where Amber works, and it’s not long before she’s invited to a party where there’s a muddle of drink and desire. By the night’s end, Pete slips away with a lover and in an act of revenge Amber sleeps with his brother, Angus. The following morning, Penny wakes hungover—and lost—in the bush. Trying to find her car, she stumbles on Amber in a remote clearing. Amber is acting strangely, and asks Penny if she’ll drive the Kombi. Penny follows her instructions to reverse, and hits a body; it turns out Pete was sleeping behind the vehicle. On seeing Pete rolling in agony, Penny realises Amber intended for her to hit Pete’s lover. With Pete hospitalised, the women escape cross-country. Amber attempts to see her incarcerated mum for guidance, but her mum refuses her visit. Devastated by the rejection, Amber spins into a manic state, insisting they return to Penny’s childhood home. Together, they break into the Bondi mansion, only for a neighbour to alert the cops. Faced with being arrested, Penny is forced to contact her mum to prove she has a right to be on the premises. Her mum rushes home to find her weary daughter, who admits to running a man over and voluntarily goes to the police station to testify. A year later, Penny is working as a barista in Sydney, having been fully acquitted, and coping with the emotional impact of the court case. Amber has been sentenced to twelve years in prison and has cut off communication with Penny. Penny’s decides to return to Shearsend, where she is determined to resurrect her father’s childhood orchard. At the orchard, Penny hikes up a mountain and from her lookout sees a van pause at the end of her driveway. Approaching her mailbox, she hopes for a letter from Amber

Are murders equal in the eyes of the media?: A study of race, gender, class and quality of coverage

Crime news is an important component of local news. A literature review suggested that the media’s coverage of crime news can reveal vital information about media routines and biases. The main issue in this study is race and the media. The subtext of crime news and how the media cover different races when dealing with crime can speak to the larger issues of race and the media. The primary focus of this study was to examine how the media cover victims of murder, but more specifically to investigate any differences that may exist in how they cover White and Black victims. The study also looked for differences in coverage according to gender and social class. A content analysis looked at articles about homicide victims from The Advocate. Interviews with reporters were conducted to determine how these reporters approach and cover murders. Interviews with police media relations officers revealed how these officers disseminate information. This study concluded that the media give White murder victims more prominent coverage than Black victims and female victims better coverage than male victims. The content analysis demonstrates that those who are most likely to be victimized, Black males, receive the least prominent coverage

(Dé)faire l'amour d'une histoire à l'autre : les dynamiques amoureuses chez Annie Ernaux dans « Fragments autour de Philippe V. », L'occupation et L'usage de la photo

Ce mémoire analyse les représentations de l'amour dans trois textes autobiographiques d'Annie Ernaux: « Fragments autour de Philippe V. », L'occupation et L'Usage de la photo. L'amour est ici considéré comme une problématique féministe, dans la mesure où, comme le montre un préambule théorique, le modèle romantique impliquant notamment l'idéal de la fusion, cette abolition de soi dans l'autre, est une construction historique et politique qui tend à nuire aux femmes. Malgré la possibilité pour celles-ci de choisir leur partenaire ou de rompre, ce modèle demeure encore très influent aujourd'hui. Néanmoins, l'emprunt à\ud différentes théories sociologiques permet d'envisager la mise en couple à la fois comme un processus contraignant et comme un espace d'évolution dans la définition de soi, puisqu'il est possible de prendre conscience des schèmes préconstruits et de s'en distancier. La principale hypothèse défendue est celle d'une trajectoire en trois états du sujet féminin, qui jouirait d'abord dans le premier texte d'une autonomie apparente lors de la séduction et des débuts du couple, puis qui se révélerait profondément hétéronome dans sa relation amoureuse et même après la fin de celle-ci dans L'occupation, pour ensuite tenter, avec L'Usage de la photo, de bâtir un nouveau rapport à l'amour qui serait plus équilibré et ne reposerait pas sur une dissymétrie des rôles amoureux. Dans ce demier texte qui comprend plusieurs photographies, la déconstruction imaginaire du genre sexuel contribue au dépassement du modèle conjugal, puisque celui-ci implique des rôles spécifiques pour chacun des sexes. L'analyse montre que les trois textes sont marqués, à des degrés variables, par des allers-retours entre les normes relatives au modèle traditionnel dans lequel la narratrice a été socialisée et une distanciation critique par rapport à ce modèle. Cette distanciation opère surtout au moment de l'écriture, caractérisée par son aspect antisentimental, parfois presque documentaire, qui favorise la conscientisation. L'écriture d'Ernaux sera également étudiée en lien avec celle de ses amants impliqués dans chacun des textes de notre corpus. \ud « Fragments autour de Philippe V. » et L'occupation ont chacun provoqué des réponses dé Philippe Vilain, lequel s'efforce de défendre une autre image de lui et de la relation amoureuse, de même qu'une conception plus traditionnelle de l'amour hétérosexuel en général. Ces réactions rendent encore plus perceptibles la dimension féministe des textes d'Ernaux et la présence implicite d'une lutte des sexes derrière le mythe de l'amour. L'Usage de la photo, quant à lui, a été coécrit avec Marc Marie, dont l'écriture paraît au contraire s'harmoniser avec celle d'Ernaux. Association Between Learning Methods and Analgesic Opioid Abuse

Opioids are an extremely addictive class of medication used to treat pain; overprescribing practices and chronic misuse has led to an epidemic that continues to grow. The opioid epidemic not only has the potential to cause injury or even death but also has a large impact on the U.S. economy. Research regarding determinants of abuse are needed to improve safeguards for opioid abuse prevention. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if learning capabilities and/or learning medium preference are correlated with analgesic opioid abuse. The social-ecological model was used to evaluate the social levels of influence for abuse in order to limit abuse illness, injury, and economic burdens. The target population for this study was the active patient population of a large healthcare network in New York State that represents both rural and urban population densities. Secondary data from the Bassett Healthcare Network electronic health record was used to examine the association between the presence of analgesic opioid abuse and the results of a learning assessment; additional determinants that were examined included county of residence characteristics, population density, access to patient portals, and patient demographics. The results of this study revealed an association between learning assessments and analgesic opioid abuse. Furthermore, a significant relationship was identified between analgesic opioid abuse diagnosis and preferred learning methods, learning barriers, population density, county of residence, age, insurance status, and access to a patient portal. Identification of factors related to analgesic opioid abuse can be utilized by all levels of government to determine the direction of funding, enhance policy development, and further refine public health intervention works, and thus promote social change
