    Opheliid polychaetes collected by the United States Antarctic Research Program and additional material from South America were made available for study through the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., USA. The Opheliidae from Antarctic seas were treated by Hartman (1966, 1967, 1978), who summarized earlier work and also described several new species. Of the five genera she recorded, two (Travisia and Kesun) have since been synonymized and one, Ammotrypane, has been referred to Ophelina; Hartman’s records therefore encompass four genera, three of which are represented in the present collections. No representatives of Euzonus (Thoracophelia) were found. The following species were recorded from Antarctica in the present study: Ophelia algida n. sp., Ophelina breviata (Ehlers, 1913), Ophelina cf. cylindricaudata (sensu Hartmann-Schröder and Rosenfeldt, 1989), Ophelina nematoides (Ehlers, 1913), Ophelina scaphigera (Ehlers, 1900), Ophelina cf. setigera (Hartman, 1978), Ophelina syringopyge (Ehlers, 1901), Travisia antarctica Hartman, 1967 (emended 1978), Travisia kerguelensis McIntosh, 1885, Travisia kerguelensis gravieri Monro, 1930, Travisia palmeri n. sp. and Travisia tincta n. sp. The new species of Ophelia is distinguished by having branchiae starting on chaetiger 2 (rather than on or after chaetiger 8 as in most species of this genus). Travisia palmeri has 22 chaetigers and is distinguished by long branchiae. Travisia kerguelensis gravieri is raised to full species status and renamed T. monroi. Travisia tincta n. sp., distinguished by a distinctive Methyl Green staining pattern and long branchiae, is described from off Peru.Los poliquetos ofélidos objeto del presente estudio corresponden al material recolectado por el Programa de Investigación Antártico de los Estados Unidos así como material adicional procedente de Sudamérica. Este material ha sido puestos a disposición de los autores por la Institución Smithsoniana, Washington, D.C., Estados Unidos de América. Los Opheliidae de los mares antárticos fueron previamente estudiados por Hartman (1966, 1967, 1978), quien reunió lo publicado hasta el momento y describió nuevas especies. De los cinco géneros registrados por ella, dos (Travisia y Kesun) han sido desde entonces sinonimizados y uno, Ammotrypane, ha sido incluido en Ophelina. Así, los registros de Hartman incluyen cuatro géneros, tres de los cuales están representados en las colecciones estudiadas. No se han encontrados representantes de Euzonus (Thoracophelia).     A New Approach to Hazard Analysis for Rotorcraft

    STPA is a new hazard analysis technique that can identify more hazard causes than traditional techniques. It is based on the assumption that accidents result from unsafe control rather than component failures. To demonstrate and evaluate STPA for its application to rotorcraft, it was used to analyze the UH-60MU Warning, Caution, and Advisory (WCA) system associated with the electrical and fly-by-wire flight control system (FCS). STPA results were compared with an independently conducted hazard analysis of the UH-60MU using traditional safety processes described in SAE ARP 4761 and MIL-STD-882E. STPA found the same hazard causes as the traditional techniques and also identified things not found using traditional methods, including design flaws, human behavior, and component integration and interactions. The analysis includes organizational and physical components of systems and can be used to design safety into the system from the beginning of development while being compliant with MIL-STD-882.     Evidence-based choices of physicians: a comparative analysis of physicians participating in Internet CME and non-participants

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The amount of medical education offered through the Internet continues to increase, providing unprecedented access for physicians nationwide. However, the process of evaluating these activities is ongoing. This study is a continuation of an earlier report that found online continuing medical education (CME) to be highly effective in making evidence-based decisions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To determine the effectiveness of 114 Internet CME activities, case vignette-based surveys were administered to U.S.-practicing physicians immediately following participation, and to a representative control group of non-participants. Survey responses were analyzed based on evidence presented in the content of CME activities. An effect size for each activity was calculated using Cohen's <it>d </it>to determine the amount of difference between the two groups in the likelihood of making evidence-based clinical decisions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In a sample of 17,142 U.S. physicians, of the more than 350,000 physicians who participated in 114 activities, the average effect size was 0.82. This indicates an increased likelihood of 48% that physicians participating in online activities were making clinical choices based on evidence.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Physicians who participated in online CME activities continue to be more likely to make evidence-based clinical choices than non-participants in response to clinical case vignettes.</p

    Evidence supporting dissimilatory and assimilatory lignin degradation in Enterobacter lignolyticus SCF1

    Lignocellulosic biofuels are promising as sustainable alternative fuels, but lignin inhibits access of enzymes to cellulose, and by-products of lignin degradation can be toxic to cells. The fast growth, high efficiency and specificity of enzymes employed in the anaerobic litter deconstruction carried out by tropical soil bacteria make these organisms useful templates for improving biofuel production. The facultative anaerobe Enterobacter lignolyticus SCF1 was initially cultivated from Cloud Forest soils in the Luquillo Experimental Forest in Puerto Rico, based on anaerobic growth on lignin as sole carbon source. The source of the isolate was tropical forest soils that decompose litter rapidly with low and fluctuating redox potentials, where bacteria using oxygen-independent enzymes likely play an important role in decomposition. We have used transcriptomics and proteomics to examine the observed increased growth of SCF1 grown on media amended with lignin compared to unamended growth. Proteomics suggested accelerated xylose uptake and metabolism under lignin-amended growth, with up-regulation of proteins involved in lignin degradation via the 4-hydroxyphenylacetate degradation pathway, catalase/peroxidase enzymes, and the glutathione biosynthesis and glutathione S-transferase (GST) proteins. We also observed increased production of NADH-quinone oxidoreductase, other electron transport chain proteins, and ATP synthase and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. This suggested the use of lignin as terminal electron acceptor. We detected significant lignin degradation over time by absorbance, and also used metabolomics to demonstrate moderately significant decreased xylose concentrations as well as increased metabolic products acetate and formate in stationary phase in lignin-amended compared to unamended growth conditions. Our data show the advantages of a multi-omics approach toward providing insights as to how lignin may be used in nature by microorganisms coping with poor carbon availability

    Same-Day Physical Therapy Consults in an Outpatient Neuromuscular Disease Physician Clinic

    Background: Team-based care has been shown to offer more comprehensive benefits to patients when compared to standard physician-based care alone in clinics for chronic conditions. However, apart from grant-funded multidisciplinary clinics, there are no reports on the usage of same-day physical therapy (PT) consults within a daily outpatient neuromuscular disease (NMD) physician clinic. Objective: To determine the impact of same-day PT consults at the University of Utah’s outpatient Clinical Neurosciences Center. Design: A qualitative assessment and survey of patient satisfaction. Methods: An eight question Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant patient satisfaction survey using a 5-point Likert scale was administered. Demographic data and Press-Ganey Provider Satisfaction surveys were retrospectively collected from electronic medical records for patients receiving same-day PT encounters in the neuromuscular division over 1 year. Results: Mean (standard deviation) age was 54.22 (19.81) years for 134 patient encounters, median age was 60 years, with 76 male (57%) and 58 female (43%) patients. Mean Likert score for 61 self-reported patient satisfaction surveys for same-day PT consults was 4.87 (97.4%). Press-Ganey Provider Satisfaction scores improved from 89.9% (N=287) for the year prior to 90.8% (N=320) for the corresponding year (P=0.427). A total of 46 (75.4%) patients have either never before received PT care or never before received PT care for their NMD, 67.4% of whom were male. Conclusion: Same-day PT consults in an outpatient NMD physician clinic demonstrated excellent patient satisfaction and improved access to specialty care. This model could potentially be implemented in other academic medical centers to improve access to rehabilitation services for patients with NMD
