    Comparison of theoretical and flight-measured local flow aerodynamics for a low-aspect-ratio fin

    Flight test and theoretical aerodynamic data were obtained for a flight test fixture mounted on the underside of an F-104G aircraft. The theoretical data were generated using two codes: a two-dimensional transonic code called code H, and a three-dimensional subsonic and supersonic code called wing-body. Pressure distributions generated by the codes for the flight test fixture, as well as compared with the flight-measured data. The two-dimensional code pressure distributions compared well except at the minimum pressure point and the trailing edge. Shock locations compared well except at high transonic speeds. However, the two-dimensional code did not adequately predict the displacement thickness of the flight test fixture.     Milk supply response was estimated for Pennsylvania using three different levels of structural aggregation. The base level involved the estimation of milk production in a single equation. Under the second method, production was the product of two equations: milk per cow and number of milk cows. The third method factored production into three equations: milk per cow, number of dairy farms, and number of cows per farm. As expected, the greater the degree of disaggregation the more was learned about the structural aspects of milk production.     A Method for Deriving Accurate Gas-Phase Abundances for the Multiphase Interstellar Galactic Halo

    We describe a new method for determining total gas-phase abundances for the Galactic ISM with minimal ionization uncertainties. For sight lines toward globular clusters containing both UV-bright stars and radio pulsars, one can measure column densities of HI and several metal ions using UV absorption measurements and of H II using radio dispersion measurements, thereby minimizing ionization uncertainties. We apply this method to the globular cluster Messier 3 sight line using FUSE and HST ultraviolet spectroscopy of the post-asymptotic giant branch star von Zeipel 1128 and radio observations by Ransom et al. of millisecond pulsars. Ionized hydrogen is 45+/-5% of the total along this sight line, the highest measured fraction along a high-latitude pulsar sight line. We derive total gas-phase abundances log N(S)/N(H) = -4.87+/-0.03 and log N(Fe)/N(H) = -5.27+/-0.05. Our derived sulfur abundance is in excellent agreement with recent solar system determinations of Asplund, Grevesse, & Sauval, but -0.14 dex below the solar system abundance typically adopted in studies of the ISM. The iron abundance is ~-0.7 dex below the solar system abundance, consistent with significant depletion. Abundance estimates derived by simply comparing S II and Fe II to H I are +0.17 and +0.11 dex higher, respectively, than our measurements. Ionization corrections to the gas-phase abundances measured in the standard way are, therefore, significant compared with the measurement uncertainties along this sight line. The systematic uncertainties associated with the uncertain contribution to the electron column density from ionized helium could raise these abundances by <+0.03 dex (+7%).     Tony Blair’s political instinct typically is to associate himself only with the future. As such, his explicit appeal to ‘the past’ in his references to New Labour’s desire to establish a “new Bretton Woods” is sufficient in itself to arouse some degree of analytical curiosity (see Blair 1998a). The fact that this appeal was made specifically in relation to Bretton Woods is even more interesting. The resonant image of the international economic context established by the original Bretton Woods agreements invokes a style and content of policy-making which Tony Blair typically dismisses as neither economically nor politically consistent with his preferred vision of the future (see Blair 2000c, 2001b)

    The computational viewpoint contained within the Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) shows how collections of objects can be configured within a distributed system to enable interworking. It prescribes certain capabilities that such objects are expected to possess and structuring rules that apply to how these objects can be configured with one another. This paper highlights how the specification language Z can be used to formalise these capabilities and the associated structuring rules, thereby enabling specifications of ODP systems from the computational viewpoint to be achieved

    The pre-shock gas of SN1006 from HST/ACS observations

    We derive the pre-shock density and scale length along the line of sight for the collisionless shock from a deep HST image that resolves the H alpha filament in SN1006 and updated model calculations. The very deep ACS high-resolution image of the Balmer line filament in the northwest (NW) quadrant shows that 0.25 < n_0 < le$ 0.4 cm-3 and that the scale along the line of sight is about 2 x 10^{18} cm, while bright features within the filament correspond to ripples with radii of curvature less than 1/10 that size. The derived densities are within the broad range of earlier density estimates, and they agree well with the ionization time scale derived from the Chandra X-ray spectrum of a region just behind the optical filament. This provides a test for widely used models of the X-ray emission from SNR shocks. The scale and amplitude of the ripples are consistent with expectations for a shock propagating though interstellar gas with ~ 20% density fluctuations on parsec scales as expected from studies of interstellar turbulence. One bulge in the filament corresponds to a knot of ejecta overtaking the blast wave, however.
