    Conducting unattended home sleep studies in children with narcolepsy and healthy matched controls: a feasibility study

    Introduction: We investigated the technical feasibility and acceptability of conducting unattended home sleep studies for research purposes in children with and without narcolepsy. Methods: 23 children with narcolepsy (age: 8-15 years) and 23 healthy gender and age-matched controls were recruited. As part of a larger descriptive study called ‘The Paediatric Narcolepsy Project’, we aimed to investigate the differences in sleep architecture between children with and without narcolepsy. Children underwent home polysomnography (PSG) using a portable PSG system (Embla® Systems). A standard montage was used to measure sleep architecture with nine EEG channels (F3, F4, C3, Cz, C4, O1, O2, M1, M2), two electro-oculography (EOG) and two electromyography (EMG) channels. All children were set up in their own homes by the researcher. Study failure was defined as sleep recordings with less than four hours of interpretable sleep data. Four hours of sleep was deemed acceptable to capture two sleep cycles. Failed home studies were classified into three main areas of sensor removal, equipment failure or battery failure. Results: 22/23 children with narcolepsy (male=15, female=8) underwent home PSG. One child declined due to a previous negative PSG experience in hospital. Similarly, 22/23 matched controls underwent the sleep recording. One child became unwell during the set up, so did not proceed.16/22 (73%) of the children with narcolepsy were successfully studied and all of the control children were successfully studied. Discussion: This research has shown that conducting unattended home sleep studies to measure sleep architecture in children with narcolepsy and healthy controls for research purposes is feasible and is tolerated by the majority of children. However, our data show that unattended home sleep studies carry a risk of data loss, even when set up in the home by a trained researcher

    A particle swarm optimization based memetic algorithm for dynamic optimization problems

    Copyright @ Springer Science + Business Media B.V. 2010.Recently, there has been an increasing concern from the evolutionary computation community on dynamic optimization problems since many real-world optimization problems are dynamic. This paper investigates a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based memetic algorithm that hybridizes PSO with a local search technique for dynamic optimization problems. Within the framework of the proposed algorithm, a local version of PSO with a ring-shape topology structure is used as the global search operator and a fuzzy cognition local search method is proposed as the local search technique. In addition, a self-organized random immigrants scheme is extended into our proposed algorithm in order to further enhance its exploration capacity for new peaks in the search space.     Investigating the association between early years foundation stage profile scores and subsequent diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder: a retrospective study of linked healthcare and education data

    Objective: We set out to test whether the early years foundation stage profile (EYFSP) score derived from 17 items assessed by teachers at the end of reception school year had any association with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis in subsequent years. This study tested the feasibility of successfully linking education and health data. Design: A retrospective data linkage study. Setting and participants: The Born in Bradford longitudinal cohort of 13, 857 children. Outcome measures: We linked the EYFSP score at the end of reception year with subsequent diagnosis of an ASD, using all ASD general practitioner Read codes. We used the total EYFSP score and a subscore consisting of five key items in the EYFSP, prospectively identified using a panel of early years autism experts. Results: This study demonstrated the feasibility of linking education and health data using ASDs as an exemplar. A total of 8,935 children had linked primary care and education data with 20.7% scoring <25 on the total EYFSP and 15.2% scoring <10 on a EYFSP subscore proposed by an expert panel prospectively. The rate of diagnosis of ASDs at follow-up was just under 1% (84 children), children scoring <25 on the total EYFSP had a 4.1% chance of ASD compared with 0.15% of the remaining children. Using the prospectively designed subscore, this difference was greater (6.4% and 0.12%, respectively). Conclusions: We demonstrate the feasibility of linking education and health data. Performance on teacher ratings taken universally in school reception class can flag children at risk of ASDs. Further research is warranted to explore the utility of EYFSP as an initial screening tool for ASD in early school years

    Mangroves enhance the biomass of coral reef fish communities in the Caribbean

    Mangrove forests are one of the world's most threatened tropical ecosystems with global loss exceeding 35% (ref. 1). Juvenile coral reef fish often inhabit mangroves, but the importance of these nurseries to reef fish population dynamics has not been quantified. Indeed, mangroves might be expected to have negligible influence on reef fish communities: juvenile fish can inhabit alternative habitats and fish populations may be regulated by other limiting factors such as larval supply or fishing. Here we show that mangroves are unexpectedly important, serving as an intermediate nursery habitat that may increase the survivorship of young fish. Mangroves in the Caribbean strongly influence the community structure of fish on neighbouring coral reefs. In addition, the biomass of several commercially important species is more than doubled when adult habitat is connected to mangroves. The largest herbivorous fish in the Atlantic, Scarus guacamaia, has a functional dependency on mangroves and has suffered local extinction after mangrove removal. Current rates of mangrove deforestation are likely to have severe deleterious consequences for the ecosystem function, fisheries productivity and resilience of reefs. Conservation efforts should protect connected corridors of mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs

    Evaluation of host-derived volatiles for trapping Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

    Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopognidae) cause pain and distress through blood feeding, and transmit viruses that threaten both animal and human health worldwide. There are few effective tools for monitoring and control of biting midges, with semiochemical-based strategies offering the advantage of targeting host-seeking populations. In previous studies, we identified the host preference of multiple Culicoides species, including Culicoides impunctatus, as well as cattle-derived compounds that modulate the behavioral responses of C. nubeculosus under laboratory conditions. Here, we test the efficacy of these compounds, when released at different rates, in attracting C. impunctatus under field conditions in Southern Sweden. Traps releasing 1-octen-3-ol, decanal, phenol, 4-methylphenol or 3-propylphenol, when combined with carbon dioxide (CO2), captured significantly higher numbers of C. impunctatus compared to control traps baited with CO2 alone, with low release rates (0.1 mg h−1, 1 mg h−1) being generally more attractive. In contrast, traps releasing octanal or (E)-2-nonenal at 1 mg h−1 and 10 mg h−1 collected significantly lower numbers of C. impunctatus than control traps baited with CO2 only. Nonanal and 2-ethylhexanol did not affect the attraction of C. impunctatus when compared to CO2 alone at any of the release rates tested. The potential use of these semiochemicals as attractants and repellents for biting midge control is discussed
